Upon entry there was no one here which worried me a little, but it was also post holidays so I am not sure if it was just a slow time. I am glad we didn't let that stop us from coming in because the food was not shabby. We decided to get the bbq plates (ribs/brisket and sausage/pork). Was it the best bbq I had? No but it would def hit the spot for a craving. The bbq tasted fresh and the portions were good for the price. I wasn't a fan of the sides. The beans nuh uh. The Mac was ok. The fries were decent. Finally made it down to this BBQ spot down in the CBD, and the atmosphere and friendly customer service did not disappoint. We were able to try a variety of meats and sides but our favorites were the beef fat fries, smoked turkey breast, pork sausage, and collard greens. The beef fat fries were well-seasoned and topped with the most unique queso cheese, while the collard greens were aromatic and extremely flavorful. That being said, the portion sizes for the meats left a little to be desired and the macaroni and cheese was a tad overcooked. Contrary to its name, there also seemed to be very little cheese in the pimento cheese grits, although the consistency of the corn was smooth and perfectly cooked. We also didn't care for the chopped brisket which was rather dry and under seasoned. The vinegary BBQ sauces were also too runny for our taste, though despite the consistency, the House BBQ sauce still packed a punch. I would've also liked to have more than just one slice of bread to balance out all the additional sides and condiments. All in all, I would definitely eat at this spot again even if it was solely for the beef fat fries or the collard greens. This place was just okay to me. I'm very particular about BBQ, but I went to the Pelicans game, and this was in a prime location to be to have a meal and then walk over to the Smoothie King Center. The ordering process was simple, you go up to register to place your order and you self-seat. It helps to know what you want so that you aren't standing in the way of others who are ready to order. We were a party of three, and there were no clean three seater tables. We waited a couple of minutes before asking the cashier to clean a table. I was with two of my mentees, and they raved about the burgers. One of them is a very picky eater, but he ate his entire burger before I could even get a few bites of my food in. My other mentee's order came out wrong, but she was satisfied and didn't correct it because she liked the fries (her original side item was macaroni and cheese). I had the lean brisket, macaroni, and collard greens. It was nothing special, but it wasn't worst. I used all of the sauces to impart more flavor. The pickles were great though! It was about 70.00 for all three of us including tip. Not bad. read more

This is a brand new BBQ joint in the CBD that will also have a brewery attached soon in the future. The pit master used to work at Blue Oak and that influence is certainly evident in some of the food. They have a bit more of a Louisiana focus with some of their sausages along with offering gumbo and a sauce piquant. I tried the sauce piquant for one of my sides and found it really needed a LOT more chicken in it. Overall the brisket reminds me of Blue Oak back when they were more consistent and currently this is the best BBQ available in the CBD these days. Stopped into Devil Moon before a Pelicans game and ordered the rib platter but since they were short on ribs they gave me some chopped brisket to go with it. I had the standard greens and Mac and Cheese as sides. The greens were great with a kick of spice that I love. Im not a Mac an Cheese fan but it was pretty good though I dont like the shells. Devil Moon has alot of local sides like sauce piquant, dirty rice and red beans and rice, next time I will order one of those in place of the Mac. Not going back. Food was bleh...we got the 3 meat plate. Fatty brisket was actually good. But you can't get passed the smoke flavor. It's almost too much smoke. The sides weren't good. Mac and cheese was grainy, white beans..again..too much smoke and the pasta salad was bland. There was also a mouse that kept running back and forth like it was normal. I was very impressed with this place. In a city with solid bbq option, Devil Moon really held its own with the meats and exceeded expectations with the sides. The fatty brisket was a highlight, as was the pulled pork. With regards to the sides, macaroni and cheese was as good as you can get anywhere but what really blew me away was the baked beans. Loaded with chunks of pork, it was incredibly flavorful and by far my favorite side. The service was outgoing and friendly and the ambiance was great - clean, modern, but also ideal for watching a game or grabbing a quick meal with friends. Got two sides much better than first experience I would say skip the Mac n cheese and potato salad (flavorless) get dirty rice and greens. Again the size of the sides are good The meats were better - ribs had more meat this time and not dry, brisket was good quality. I enjoy a good rib or brisket without sauce But these required sauce just to have any reasonable taste. Again I've had ribs and brisket that were seasoned / smoked that one could eat with a good taste without sauce. I would bump up the rating to 2.5 stars maybe 3 Would not go back for now at least I have other options. Maybe another try if friends insist on going. My son loves Blue Oak and I've heard nothing but good things about Blue Oak but I've never been. So Devil Moon has to be good right? Very wrong. Nice modern , new , clean location with friendly staff. However, I go to bbq places for the food and Devil Moon failed to make the cut. In fact, as far as taste goes the bbq wasn't bad but it was far from good. The burnt tip gumbo was salty and horrible as was the sauce piquant. Mac and cheese was tasteless. The coleslaw was bitter and dry. The pulled pork was cooked to perfection but lacked any smoky taste, any "rub" flavor or any spices as did the brisket. It was simply cooked food which relies heavily on the sauce..and the sauces were below average also. I'm not sure if it's the technique or the appliances used. Several friends have the fancy pellet smoker pits with timers and the internet etc and EACH is times better than this place. Pick ANY bbq place in the entire area and I'm betting it's better taste wise than this place. All restaurants are expensive nowadays. The downtown location is no different. I expected the prices. However, the very high prices combined with below average taste makes it a no brainer. The gumbo was $8. The portion size was a about right for downtown..but wow! Was it bad! The gumbo was embarrassing. It's the gumbo you get up north labeled "Cajun" and you know right away that it wasn't made by someone from New Orleans. Salty water with no imagination and "enhanced" by equally tasteless potato salad. The sauce piquant was criminal. Tomato paste, broth with little meat and no taste and fancy rice....nice try. Stay in your lane and stick to bbq..because compared to the piquant and the gumbo the bbq was edible. The piquant, Mac and cheese, and the coleslaw are side items. You get two to go along with a plate meal which I guess is a good deal if you consider each is priced at $5 if purchased individually. A manager did come up to ask how everything tasted. I replied ok. I was eating at the time and talking and didn't want to give him a review in front of other customers. Great potential. The hardest part of smoking is getting the meat cooked right...they score big with that. However, how can they leave out or remove the smoke flavor is beyond comprehension. Maybe it was a bad day and they need to work out some technical kinks. If the bbq tasted like bbq it might be a great place. They've spent lots of money on the location. Go the extra mile and make the food MUCH better. Average would be an upgrade to what we had yesterday. They need an honest reassessment of whoever is putting out the recipe for gumbo, Mac, piquant, and coleslaw. I can send over any first year restaurant student to do better with those items. Any hh in New Orleans could do better. I didn't try the ribs. I planned on doing that on my next trip. There won't be a next trip. I've now got to go to Blue Oak to see the difference. Nothing was bad about our visit except price. Nothing stood out as exceptionally however. Both my husband and I had the brisket sandwich. The potato roll was exceptionally soft, which I liked. Went with a group for lunch and had a couple of the platters with all of the sides. All of the meat was perfectly cooked/smoked and the mustard and house sauce were wonderful complements. Loved all of the sides, but especially loved the cracklings- not greasy at all and the accompanying sauce was perfect with them. Highly recommend! read more

Devil Moon is the highest quality BBQ in NOLA - BAR NONE! The walk up counter with a full view of the kitchen is an exciting way to introduce the customer to this Louisiana influenced BBQ menu. The basics are all provided with most of the sides having a little wink to Louisiana BBQ including beans and rice, sauce piquant, etc. All of the staff was very welcoming and very attentive. Food was prepared quickly and delivered to the table. Couldn't have asked for more. Little BONUS - I did not feel like I needed to take a nap right after lunch as is typical for me with BBQ. I got the brisket and I thought it was really good! The sides were also good, I got collared greens and rice and beans. You order at a counter, and take a number. I was at the Hyatt across the street for a conference, and it's a convenient location to pop over for lunch. Visited while in town for work. The turkey is an unexpected twist on BBQ that was moist and delicious. The brisket was great in terms of traditional fare. Absolutely unsanitary food preparation. STAY AWAY! I walked in around 2:30 today and was very excited to try out the new BBQ joint in town. I was waiting for my food and I was watching the employees prepare my food through their very open kitchen. Unfortunately my wife saw an employee insert his gloved finger into his nose and then into the container of pulled pork that went onto the plate he was making for me. After she alerted me of this horribly unsafe and disgusting food preparation I personally witnessed him doing the exact same thing before reaching into the container of onions that also went onto my plate. Unbelievably he continued to grab at his face and nose before he reached into the bread bag to finish my order. As I was completely grossed out by this point I decided to let the person who took my order know that I was not going to touch that food. Unfortunately I was not offered a refund for food I had already paid for even though it never left the kitchen. I do not believe the restaurant owner was present for this lunch service but I would advise them that food prep and safety procedures be retrained. read more

Really tasty barbecue. Had the half chicken special with a Frito Pie and potato salad. Would go back to try more, great for a quick lunch.
