If you're wondering if you should buy a guitar from Detroit Guitar, don't hesitate. Very competitive pricing, and a great understanding of musicians needs, and really good follow-up. I've been buying guitars for 40 years and I've spent quite a bit of money on high-end guitars. My first experience with Detroit Guitar was this past July and I have never had a company jump through so many hoops to please me. Charlie Lorenzi is probably one of the best salesmen I have ever met. He listened to my needs, made a few suggestions, and helped me get what I've been saving up for. Upon getting the guitar, something was amiss and I contacted Charlie. I was impressed with the extent he went to to correct the issue. He actually contacted the manufacturer of the guitar I purchased and worked it out so that the guitar pickups were replaced to my needs. It's rare that you find a company that understands a guitar player's needs and wants to help you be happy as a professional musician. I had no doubt that he would stand by me until I was happy. Like I said, don't hesitate to buy a guitar from Detroit Guitars. They're a good company, old-fashioned customer service. Just a great, fun company to buy a guitar from. read more

Royal Oak location: Lots of cool hard to find guitars like Powers, McNaught, Novo, and a good selection of Fender Custom Shop pieces... However, not many used guitars... at least, I didn't see any. Nor were there a variety of instruments at lower price points. Further, the space was pretty sterile and didn't feel homie (for lack of a better word). To be clear, the one employee I spoke with was very friendly; the space itself felt sterile. It's essentially a guitar shop for lawyers and dentists. Not my jam. read more

I got my bass tuned up and restrung right before I left for college and last year and everything has been great since I got it done. These guys do great work. read more

While they had an excellent selection of new instruments in a very attractive storefront in Birmingham, I did not see a lot of used guitars, unfortunately. The staff were very helpful & engaging, but it was a bit of a turn-off to be told that I should ask for an instrument to be taken from the wall for me to try--I prefer a store where I can just pull something off the wall to try without asking for help every time. Maybe that's just me. Great selection, though, and knowledgeable staff. Really pleasant atmosphere overall. read more

Detroit Guitar is great, I've purchased Amps, straps, cords, and have gotten my guitar re-strung. Each time I've been met with friendly and welcoming attitude, and the employees always seem welcome to chat. The prices were nothing absurd on items I have purchased, and I've gotten my Amps for less at this store than I have at other locations. I also base guitars stores on if they have a random old dude chilling in there all day just kicking it, and this location indeed has such an elusive figure. 5 stars, should be 6. read more

Found them through Reverb, but had a few questions, so I asked to set up a phone call. The fella I worked with was friendly but down to business, gave me a good deal on a guitar and case, and shipped it all ASAP. He texted me the labels and was very easy to deal with when it turned out the guitar didn't actually fit in the case I bought. On one hand, that's something I would have liked to have known before receiving it. On the other hand, I didn't ask. Still, very pleasant experience overall. Would absolutely buy from them again read more

I have been to this establishment multiple times and have had to contend with some sort of irritating patronizing comment everytime I've been there. Staff is outwardly confrontational when asked about equipment that the customer isn't familiar with, especially if it is expensive. This I don't understand. I own multiple guitars, and wouldn't have bought any of them without consulting sales staff first about the guitar's history. To find that a frustration is bizarre. My first visit to the store was in June of 21. I asked about an amp facing the window I was unfamiliar with and was met with "Uh.. it's a (insert brand here)??! They're like, really expensive tube amps." which discouraged me from trying it and ultimately led me to question the associate whether or not the item was actually for sale or just display, like a museum. On a later occasion, I had a sales associate tell me in a very impatient tone that the Supro Black Magick was not a signature series amplifier, while a 15 second Google search shows that Jimmy Page's name is literally all over the product description. After this occasion, I have only gone to the store for strings and small items and STILL sales associates are visibly and very obviously irritated when completing sales for these small items. How am I supposed to be comfortable walking into your store and spending $3600 on a Les Paul when you can't be bothered to help me pick from the three brands and gauges of string you offer without grumbling about it? Seems like the focus of this establishment is to substantiate some weird sense of elitism by catering to those that can afford to drop $1000+ on custom shop finishes and collectors run releases at a moments notice, rather than actual providing a comprehensive experience for everyday working musicians. read more

Charlie is a great curator of incredible instruments. I've worked with him on two of my guitar purchases, and he's always been a pleasure. More so, the fact that Detroit Guitar has access to instruments you won't find at other stores is a major plus. Charlie has a keen eye for finding the guitars you don't just want to collect but want to play. Also, a note about his staff - not once have I had an issue with them. They've been equally pleasant to work with. I don't think I could recommend Detroit Guitar strongly enough. read more

Isn't music meant to be shared? I walked in and was in awe of all of the beautiful guitars that this place had but the employee OBVIOUSLY didn't want me touching or playing any of these guitars. I hate the vibe here because you will be judged for trying out any guitar. I played a Used Gibson SG and i always respect the instrument, but this guy literally told me to watch how I strummed this guitar. Cmon man, chill out and enjoy the music. And if you can't then maybe quit? Would recommend against coming here if you like to enjoy the vibe when spending your hard earned cash read more

The response from Detroit guitar to my google review: "We are sorry this customer is unhappy but, with all due repect, this is not an accurate version of what occurred. We have a generous return/exchange policy which he was abusing, including damaging the guitars. It's as simple as that. Also, to be clear, these are some of the brands we carry: Fender, Gibson, Paul Reed Smith, Gretsch, Taylor, Collings, and Danelectro. We are at the highest level dealer status for these brands, which allows us to offer our customers everything these brands sell, including custom shop and limited edition models." Keep in mind there are more reviews like this where they generally just call the customer wrong for having their opinion for their reviews. There are plenty of one, two, and three star reviews claiming that this store is heavily lacking in customer service and it generally is. As well as quality. Most the guitars have dry fingerboards and more than likely have been on the shelf for a very long time. The MIJ strat I eventually walked out with had oxidization spots on the frets so I got a polish but thankfully no sprouting. However to be clear I never damaged any guitar, the only mistake I made was taking the pickguard plastic off the first telecaster when I went for a setup before realizing it was essentially unplayable. They had a choice to tell me that I could not return it and just get it fixed by a tech, but they told me it was ok to return it, so I did. I wasn't abusing their return policy, I stated that I needed a guitar for a gig and after being payed for said gig would come back to purchase an American professional, or something of more expensive value, which was discussed between the employee and I. I wasn't trying out custom shop guitars on their nicest tube amp, I was using American professionals, vintera II's, and Japanese made fenders on their katana mk2 50w amp because it's the amp I use at home and those guitars were the ones I planned on buying. For the love of music, please listen to the one star reviews and go to a better store. They are generally not welcoming to players wanting to try gear which is the whole point of getting a new guitar and you would have a better shot feeling comfortable playing guitar in a library than this place. "Abusing" gear is their way of trying to blame me for a situation that could've been handled by just being a little more polite. I also definitely have an idea as to who is writing these response. read more

Very cool guitar store, amazing guitars! but the dude in there made me feel COMPLETELY unwelcome, and i was super anxious to try literally any guitar. I almost bought an 1700$ SG today, but after the dude told my brother to "watch how hard you strum that guitar" and "you know that guitar has the same pickup as the one you just played right?" When my brother went from a Noventa Jazzmazter to a Gibson SG junior. Like what, excuse me?? Completely different guitars. Thats like drinking sprite, then going to coke and saying "you know those both have water in them right??" When i heard him say that to my brother, i got a little upset to be honest. Like, how am i supposed to want to buy any of these guitars if i feel completely terrified to try anything?? Seriously, the guy was watching me the whole time and i was terrified to touch anything or ask to try anything. And i get it, the guitars are expensive, but this is not how a guitar store should make you feel. Anyway, yah, i showed up to try some guitars and buy an SG, but i did neither of those things. And it was all that guys fault. I cant emphasize this enough, you lost a 1700$ sale because of this guy. Solely this man alone read more

I bought a brand new amp from DG a couple months ago. This involved trading an old amp of mine; I got a very fair trade in offer. From start to finish Charlie and anyone else I worked with were great. Answered all questions and we're very communicative before I had even spent a cent. Even after the sale, they were super helpful when I had a question and even offered to take the amp in for repair for what ended up not even being an issue. This felt like a store for people who care about guitars and amps. It felt really felt like they wanted to help me end up with the best product for what I was looking for, and to make sure that I was happy after the sale. This, combined with the incredible selection of guitars and amps, is unbeatable for this area. This is the best guitar place around and it's not close. read more

Detroit Guitar is one of the best guitar shops in the Metro Detroit Area! The Owner Charlie and his staff are great people and always willing to help and talk guitars. I recently purchased a used bass guitar from them online. Now, the bass was about 15 years old and aesthetically was in great shape. The price was fair and shipping was prompt. Upon receiving the bass I of course did a visual inspection and "attempted" to set the instrument up to my taste. When attempting to set the bass up I noticed the action was high and soon found out why... The truss rod was maxed out so it could not be tightened anymore. One could think this went unnoticed by the company. However, the bass was serviced and even came with a checklist of service, i.e. fret polish, crown and level, ECT... Which, tells me someone noticed the truss rod maxed out and did not bother to tell me. I just expected a bit more transparency from a company with such a pristine reputation. read more

Employees are judgmental - the environment doesn't feel very welcoming. I dropped off a guitar to have it set up and they told me it'd take 2 weeks. After weeks of calling and stopping in I finally got it back about 2 months later. The stock over all is ALL new so if you're looking for used gear this isn't the place. read more
