Maybe the best restaurant on Martha's Vineyard. My wife and I have eaten there many many times over probably a decade, the food is consistent and the wine selection is good. Definitely the nicest people, delivering excellent service. It's in town but a little off the beaten path so the location might make it a little hard for newcomers to find, it's definitely worth the effort. read more

Soooo Delicious!! The tenderloin and braised short rib with celery root purée and asparagus.. perfection

Détente Restaurant was one of the places recommended by the Inn we were staying at. While walking around town, we found this restaurant hidden on a quiet street, Winter St. We made reservations for that night. Indoor and outdoor seating are available. For those that wished to eat outdoors, they had a canopy/ canvas covering to keep the rain out as the weather was a little inclement the week we visited the island. We opted for indoor dining. Lots of Wine options, only 4 drink cocktails and various beer options are available. We had a scallop appetizer followed by the main meal, Pork Chop for my husband and Crusted Cod fish for me. Both were excellent and the flavors, seasonings, and sauces were superb. This was one of the only restaurants on this island that served coffee which my husband appreciated. For dessert, we shared the chocolate torte that came with cherries and ice cream. Servers all wore masks. Excellent service by Miona. Nice quiet restaurant. Highly recommend this restaurant. read more

Ddetente has seriously delicious food in a lovely setting. This was easily the best meal we had on Martha's Vineyard.

What can I say...? It really wasn't good. Actually, not good at all in my opinion. Best part of the evening was the reservation person getting us a table at the time we needed. Thank you. Now for the service. The waiter was kind of pushy. At one point wanted us to order the special appetizer instead of what we actually wanted. The food... Sadly I've had better at all you can eat Asian buffets. Will not be returning here. read more

I love this place - it's a favorite of my mom and dad's, so we all headed here on Monday for dinner. Since my parents are very familiar with all of the best, we let them order appetizers and make recommendations. Every appetizer we had was absolutely perfect and came out quickly (but not TOO quickly). My brother, parents, and I shared the yellowfin tartare, sea scallops, and cheese board, which was probably too much for just apps, but when on vacation, right? The tartare was my favorite - I legitimately could have licked the plate of the ginger lychee sauce (though my mom would have kicked my ass). Each appetizer is around $15-$18, and tastes SO fresh - you could tell it was high quality seafood. What I love about the menu was that it wasn't overwhelming - our server explained that they use seasonal and fresh ingredients, which I'm always a fan of. I ordered the salmon entree, which came with these delicious fingerling potatoes and was cooked perfectly. My brother and dad both had the beef duo, and my mom had the chicken, which is her standby order. I'm taking their word on the land animal dishes, but they all said everything was phenomenal. Service was also great - I've read some complaints about service, but we had no issues. It was also very quiet, and the option to sit outside is always a plus. I can see why my parents love this place so much - we will definitely continue coming back and trying the fresh, new dishes. We didn't do it this night, but my parents said they've gotten the tasting menu numerous times, and it's a fabulous way to try a ton of different dishes at a very reasonable price (I think it was $70 for a 7 course tasting). read more

I can count on one hand the amount of times I've left a restaurant saying WOW that was fantastic... this was one of them. Absolutely incredible food and attentive service. They made my mom something she could eat with her allergies that was so good, and my food was so delicious I couldn't decide if I wanted to shove it all in my mouth or savor it. *Chef's kiss* read more

I was so excited to have dinner here to celebrate our good friend's anniversary. Everything was good at the start...the ambiance, cocktails and apps. Service was so so (I wish the servers knew how to speak English and get the nuance of a subtle complaint). The one thing that I could not get over was how they managed to take out all the flavor and moisture of the most forgiving and best seafood meat in the world, halibut. They served it beautifully but when I bit into it, it was dry and tasteless. It felt like the chef washed out the meat with Clorox before cooking it! I complained to the wait staff but to no avail (I don't think they understood because the girl was probably a seasonal worker). For the price I paid for the food this was a terrible miss. I would recommend someone to go to Row 19 Seafood if you are thinking of splurging for a special meal. I will definitely not be going back to this restaurant. read more

Early in my stay, Jeff and his mom had asked me whether or not I would prefer to go somewhere with good food and a killer view or somewhere that had excellent food. I chose the excellent food. We had a 7:30 reservation for a Saturday night. We were seated promptly. A young man asked us about our water choice. I'm not sure where the breakdown came, but I think he didn't understand that we wanted tap water or maybe he wasn't listening. We got the tap water, but no ice. Jeff's mom ordered a drink and I asked for iced tea. When Jeff came in from parking the car, he went straight to the bar and ordered himself a drink and joined us. Our waiter came around and pushed the peach salad. We bit. I also ordered the endive salad. We placed our orders and he disappeared. He did not reappear for nearly 30 minutes. In the meantime, another person brought us a small box of soft potato bread and a small flask of olive oil. The bread and oil was delicious. We polished off two boxes. Now, about 8:15, our appetizers arrived. Since Jeff's mom and I were sharing the peach salad, he split it for us, in the kitchen. It was nothing special. The peaches were ripe and juicy, but the sauce was bland and the greens that came on top added nothing. The melted cheese, however, was delicious. Had it been called a cheese salad with a peach garnish, I would have probably enjoyed it more. The endive salad was much more interesting. It had razor thin slices of radishes and celeriac ? with endive. They were a fascinating mixture, but the real kickers were the side sauces, the olive tapenade was amazing and the other little sauce had a lemon flavor. I could have eaten just that for dinner and been completely satisfied. Dinner did not arrive for another 25 minutes. By the time we had our dinners, served, I was ready to eat anything. Luckily, my food was pretty good. I ordered a pan seared sea bass. It was perfectly cooked, but lacked any real flavor. (I had the same experience at Lure.) There was a zucchini blossom that was deep fried with a breading mixture. It looked like a giant butterfly shrimp. It was too crisp and had too much salt on it. The real stars of my dish were the mozzarella risotto and salsa verde. Together, they were amazing. Rich deep flavor from the risotto paired with the bright green, earthiness of the salsa verde. Jeff ordered a pork chop. It had a potato gratin. It was nice, but a bit heavy. There was a corn and lobster relish that was tasty. Jeff's mom ordered the lamb duo. Bits of lamb shoulder were cooked in a vegetable, shiitake mushroom ragout. That was delicious. It was paired with roasted lamb. I thought it was a bit tough and had a slight touch of gaminess. There was a nice fennel salad on her plate, as well. Despite my better judgment, we ordered dessert. That took another 15 minutes. Jeff ordered a cherry and peach compote, served with a spoon of vanilla ice cream. It wasn't too sweet, which he appreciated. I thought it was passable. I had chosen the almond butter cake with rhubarb compote and tarragon sauce. What a bizarre combo. The tarragon sauce was delicious. I want it bottled and served with ice tea! The cake had a nice texture of ground nuts. There as a soft custard/cheese on top, with a few sliced strawberries. Had that been left off, it would have been just as good. Our waiter ASKED me if I wanted more iced tea. A big no-no in my book. Of course I wanted more. That was it, I got no more. 2 glasses of iced tea in 2 hours? A big rip-off. There was a huge wait, outside, so I'm glad we had reservations. We were in a small dining room downstairs. There is only one bathroom for both men and women. The music started off at a normal level and got progressively louder through the night, hence the voices getting louder and louder to compensate. It might have just been a change in the type of music, because I didn't even notice at first, but later, it was near deafening. However, since we were seated right under the speaker, it might have been more noticeable to our table. The wait and the not having iced tea would have merited only 3 stars, but I bump it up for the delicious and inventiveness of the food. read more

Excellent restaurant. We ordered 4 different entrees and everyone loved their meal. Fresh ingredients perfectly prepared and presented. One celiac person in our party and the waiter was very helpful with accommodating their dietary restrictions. The atmosphere was very charming with a beautiful patio and the staff was extremely attentive. For the price and the quality of the food, I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

This was a legit meal! Yes, it's somewhat pricey, but absolutely worth it. The service, food quality and preparation and presentation are all first class. I ordered the peach salad which was so different but excellent and my entree was the fluke w lobster risotto and beet purée. One of the things I was most impressed with is that my entree was served hot! It was obviously not prepared and sitting under a lamp. That's very hard to find here so an extra kudos to the kitchen staff for that. The menu is great as are some of the specials. I think I need to return about 3 more times to try everything that interests me. Unfortunately I was too full for dessert but the menu was very appealing. read more

Delicious food, fantastic setting, great service -- highly recommend! Excellent all around

The best on the island. This little gem is expensive, but well worth it. So expect fine dining quality, but remember that comes with fine dining prices. They have a great wine selection; we started with Justin Isosceles by the glass, although there were many options by the bottle. They had a Mezcal Paloma that was delicious - key having fresh juice! The appetizer special of lobster risotto was absolutely out of this world! For mains, my only regret is not trying their lobster ravioli, but I was scared I'd be to full, so went with a lighter fish option. The service is 5-star and every dish was fantastic! read more

Closed when they are supposed to open. Not much else to really say other than there is no sign on the door, maybe they are out of business?

My girlfriend and I spent a romantic night on Martha's Vineyard and choose Detente for dinner based on a phone conversion about with them about their ability to accommodate our plant-based (vegan) diet. We went there before they opened and saw that they had a "half priced bar" from 5:30 - 6PM which, as Californians we took to mean a "happy hour". It was not :). The food only was half priced during that time. The bartender was friendly but not terribly focused, it seemed. I ordered one of their signature drinks and found out half way through that he didn't include one of the ingredients - there were only three ingredients. He added it but didn't bother to refill the glass for his mistake and they charged us full price regardless. We came back later for dinner and had a wonderful meal consisting of brussels sprout and sweet potato ravioli and another that was the chefs vegan special with Swiss chard, fava beans, gnocchi and more. Both meals were fantastic! Our drinks at dinner were just so-so again. My manhattan was mostly dry vermouth - rough go. In summary, the food was amazing but beware of ordering mixed drinks from the bar. Maybe stick to wine. read more

Lovely inventive appetizers--but the main menu, at least for the fall, is filled with meat/fish from distant places. Tasmanian Salmon--here in the NE makes no sense, New Zealand lamb, etc. way too much meat, not enough seafood, and not local. Basically the same list of dishes that are on every menu in town. We did however compose an entire meal from the appetizers, all local, primarily seafood, inventive combinations. Our server advised any one could be turned into a main, but we rather enjoyed several small dishes since so many sounded (and were) interesting and delicious. The peach salad we thought was delicious, the soft-shell crabs fantastic, and the artichoke soup even better. One of the four of us had the short rib appetizer which was amazing. For dessert we shared a blueberry / peach cake--again, local ingredients used well and devoured. Detente has lovely food if you like the menu, lovely small atmosphere, but to me it is one of several fine choices, but nothing that drives to go back or insist we take visitors there. read more

i really love my job...it's exposing me to places and restaurants i probably wouldn't ever check out. the first thing i noticed when receiving was the limited selection (5 appetizers, 5 entrees). since we had a large group, we decided to get every appetizer on the menu. i've been informed that the menu changes frequently, based on the season and ingredients available. the tuna tartare was one of the most amazing i've had...you could taste the freshness. the scallops were seared to perfection and had a nice seasoning crusted over it. i had the bone-in tenderloin, which came with a sweet potato ravioli. while i ordered it medium rare, as recommended by our waitress, who was very knowledgeable about the menu (i guess it's not that hard when there's only 10 options total). took some pork tenderloin (i believe) from a colleague, and i'm glad i choose what i did. for dessert, we shared 4 of them: the nutella crepe was more chocolatey (is that a word?) than hazelnutty, and came with a "pot of creme". the apple pie was literally like a mini-apple pie. also had a bite of the carrot cake and brownie, which were both alright. i'd go with the apple pie if i were to ever go back to martha's vineyard. oh...and i forgot to mention their extensive wine selection (it is a winebar). read more

Detente is my absolute favorite place for dinner on Martha's Vineyard, and it's a bit of a hidden gem in Nevin square. Chef Kevin Crowell is talented, creative and inspired, and his staff is knowledgeable and professional. When the weather is nice we love the patio but indoors has a lovely ambiance too, both upstairs & downstairs. My favorites are the peach salad, the pork bolognese, and the ahi tartare. This place was really lovely, once we managed to find it. The restaurant is tucked back in the back of a shopping square. We sat upstairs and had incredible attentive service from our waiter, Samuel. The martinis were excellent as well! We decided to only order appetizers or dinner. I had the tuna tar tar and the veal Milanese. The tuna tar tar was excellent, full of flavor, and a pretty decent portion. The veal was a bit dry, but came with a cucumber pasta and heirloom tomatoes. Those were the only good parts of the dish. My parents had the scallops, which were excellent. My mother, the food snob, even went so far to say they were the best scallops she's ever had! Overall, everything was excellent. Highly recommended. read more

Awesome dinner!! Great service! Waiter suggested a delicious bottle of wine to perfectly compliment our meal. Thanks.

Detente was doing a brisk business on Saturday night during the labor day holiday weekend. It was easy to see why, because the food quality was excellent. The tuna tartar apetizer we had was out of this world good. My beef tenderloin was cooked to perfection. The Chicken and Lamb dishes were also excellent. The service was good intially, but our waiter got inattentive over time. It was definitely a lively atmosphere. Its seemed like the place for 65 year old men to take their 30 year old mistresses. Detente is not extemely overpriced, but it wasn't a value either. A $35 chicken entree is stretching a bit, I don't care how good the chicken is or where it was raised. Overall, I would definitely recommend Detente. read more

we hadn't been to Detente in a long time until last night. Unlike their on-line menu, which has not changed, the menu at the restaurant is now small plates. They recommended 3 per person, so the price point gets up over $50/person very quickly. Our dinner with 1 glass of wine and tip came to $145. The food descriptions were a bit weird to look at, which is ok if the food works. It didn't. The fried olives were a real bad choice, as were the peas. My wife enjoyed the sea bass - the short rib and pasta were so-so. We wouldn't go back - it wasn't horrible but it was not worth the price. read more

Fabulous food, mediocre service. I used to be a great fan of this restaurant but now the vibe is very off. Had a few not great experiences there. We went there recently with a reservation and waited an hour and a half. Never did get a table. Half hearted insincere apologies. Sat at the bar, servers seemed in a very bad mood. Most restaurant managers would have offered us a drink. It was an uncomfortable set up and servers kept pushing past us. The whole mood was unpleasant. We've been to many of the top restaurants in MV over the years. They are generally overpriced and tend to underwhelm. Either the food is not cooked particularly well, or, though well cooked, it is not interesting. Detente wins on both fronts. Our table shared eight or ten dishes between the six of us and every one was interesting and cooked almost flawlessly. The scallops with grilled scallions, coconut froth and mushrooms was a great Asian fusion dish, balancing sweet and savory, salty and sour with a great swath of spicy sauce rubbed on the side. The peach appetizer with melted tallegio and arugula was surprising and excellent: I wouldn't have imagined that the rich waxy cheese would go so well with the perfectly ripe peaches. My beef shoulder 'terderloin' with figs was deep and expressive, the meat perfectly cooked (sous vide I assume), and the Berkshire pork chop across the table was equally well conceived and executed, a pale pink color and delicious. The dessert and wine list matched the inventiveness of the savory dishes. If you're on MV looking for fine cuisine, this is the place ....A year later, I just wanted to say, thank you Detente! Our meal last night was delicious, excellent, wonderful. Reminds me of Danny Meyers Union Square Cafe, attention to detail, excellent ingredients, creative preparation, great execution and lovely hospitality. read more
