This was my first time at Desi's. My folks are regulars and talked it up. The restaurant has a large dining room with a 50s look soda counter. Buffet style with lots of choices and a salad bar. I enjoyed meatloaf, mashed potatoes with gravy, Lima beans and black eyed peas. The food was excellent especially the meatloaf! Service is hit or miss at buffets but this was exceptional today. I ordered coffee and Desi brought two cups when needed. The dessert bar had many good choices including bread pudding, peach cobbler and more. This is a local joint, no frills, no menu, just a buffet for which the options change daily. It's almost always packed with customers, a lot of them workers on their lunch break. The people who work there are sweet, as is the iced tea! The fried chicken, catfish, fried okra, johnny cakes, greens, butterbeans, blackeyed peas, yams, green beans, and mac/cheese are good. But the main thing that gets me through the doors is their bread pudding. It's literally the best I've had anywhere. I make a very good bread pudding, but theirs puts mine to shame. Wish I could make it at home, as they are almost 800 miles from my house!! But I make a point of going whenever I'm in my little hometown. The people are nice and this place is always packed. The food was all fried options and I guess it rotates all the time. I was not a fan of any of the options and they were all very dry. Typical unseasoned food trying it's best to be good Southern Cuisine, but it's not! You will do better cooking your own food at home. Huge disappointment. Tried the Friday night buffet for the first time and overall it wasn't very good. Toss in the price and now it's terrible. Dry baked chicken, fish was so so, not even sure what the shrimp and Pena pasta was, mac and cheese soupy, etc. The beans were good though. Service was good but not excellent. The lunches have been very good with fried chicken, meat loaf, etc. but stay away from Friday nights. Paid $58 for three meals and the elderly woman taking our money didn't even say "thank you". We want to support local business but enough is enough. Too many other restaurants out there. You would do better at a dinner buffet at Golden Corral in Ft Walton. read more

Nice local place for southern style cooling!! Fried cornbread brought back memories of my wife's great grandmother's cooking!! They are only open from 11-2pm but it gets crowded pretty quick each day. They don't have a large selection on their buffet but it is made fresh daily. In regards to food, I had a selection of the fried chicken, ham, and roast beef and it was pretty good. My son enjoyed the bread pudding for dessert and the salad bar seemed pretty basic. The decor & atmosphere is.... memorable. If you sit against the wall you will see crumpled newspapers peeling off have been painted over. You will notice this is a local's place with people wandering to other tables to chat with an old buddy or waving at people as they walk in. Not a big buffet guy so I probably will not come back unless one of my kids wants to eat here again. My son had field day and wanted to try it so this is why we tried it out. read more

Definitely a fan of this home style southern food! Favorite is the dessert-that bread pudding!!!

Buffet that has very tasty food. Fried chicken is flavorful and juicy, liver of very good if you like liver like I do, salad bar is fresh all sides are tasty except maybe potato pancakes are a little dry. For as many people that are here in the afternoon eating they could use another server or two but they did good for all they had to do to take care of as many people that are here. Plenty of seating to accommodate everyone. Staff seems friendly although the two servers here don't smile much but for all the work they are running around to take care of everyone I can see why they not smiling as much. If in the area you should stop and try this place it is worth the effort not sure of the cost as you pay when you leave but I hear it's only about $10.00 so that's not too bad for the selection they have. Also have some decent desserts like bread pudding and banana pudding. read more

Food was ok. Typical southern slave unhealthy food. Customer service is something I cant comment on because no who worked there greeted me or said anything to me. Except when I checked out. It was crowded and backed up. It was weird eating when people are standing behind you for the buffet. Body odors strong and unwanted when you're trying to eat. read more

Good southern down home cooking. Usually very busy. Hard to park close. No fancy decor or design. A 1950's soda shop look to it. The buffet has good vegetables and meats. It is rotated and maintained. The tea is sweet and re waitresses are friendly. Have eaten there and gotten go boxes- both great. Ya have to stand in a close quarters line for the buffet during rush hour, but almost everyone is accomidating and willing to amble on. If ya like good, hot, tasty traditional southern dishes, drop in to Desi's. read more

After having had some of the best banana pudding I've ever tasted only a few days ago, I couldn't say desi's was that great. Lots of cream and mushy Nillas. The peach cobbler and apple crisp were a little textureless, but we had gotten there almost just before closing to catch the short hours. Pineapple upside down cake was slightly overdone but reminded me of how my granddad always used to make it - super sweet and deliciously sticky. The fried chicken, field peas, and corn fritters were on point! Also loved how classic it was as a small town southern buffet - the mid century decor, waitresses, short weekday hours. Southern home-style soul and comfort food at it's finest! I happened upon this happening lunch spot by accident, and am very pleased to have done so. My daughter and I have been here twice, and plan to return again sometime soon. The menu changes daily (call their menu line for the day's lineup), but the food is always fantastic! The set price, which includes drink, is reasonable and affordable, the staff is lovely, the food is ... oh wait, I already said the food is fantastic! Do yourself a favor and stop in for a bite. The food is served buffet-style. All they ask is that you don't take more than you can eat. I'd suggest getting very small servings of everything, because you'll find yourself wanting to go back and sample everything anyway! Great find, couldn't be happier. And the sweet tea is SWEET. This place is only open for about 2hrs a day for lunch. It must be goof if that's all they need to be open. This is an all you can eat restaurant. I went on a Thursday and the meats were fried chicken, ham, and beef stew. The chicken is very good and juicy. All of the meats were good. The veggies are average and most probably come out of a can. Some of the sides included were mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, yams, dressing, turnip greens, and a few more. Some of the desserts included bread pudding, banana pudding, and peach cobbler. Definitely give the bread pudding a try! For the price you definitely won't beat this place. If you're ever in the area between 11am-130pm give this place a try. read more

Pros: Rutabagas, comfort food, bread pudding. Great service--love Kathy and the others. Thank heavens I work in another town and can't eat here often. Took my mom there for lunch 2 1/2 years ago. She was 90, had advanced Alzheimer's, skinny....and she decided to eat. Slowly. Ate all sorts of food. Very slowly. When she was done (an hour after they closed), she said, "Let's go now," and off we went. Nice memory. And thanks to Desi's for letting us stay there while she ate. I heard about this place from several people in town that this was THE place to go....I figured it had to be good since they only are open for 2 1/2 hours a day. We arrived and there were about 15 people waiting just before opening. Within minutes of opening most of the place was full! Desi's is good when you look at it for what it is, a southern food buffet. The food is hit and miss. The red beand and sausage was good. Greens were insufficient, mac and cheese noodles were a bit over, the lima beans were not great. But, the bread pudding and the banana pudding were the bomb. As were the baked beans and creamed corn. Was home visiting my parents for the week, and they took us by this restaurant for the Friday fish buffet. This is the Southern food I miss so much living in California. The fried fish was good, cooked right, not greasy. Hushpuppies were amazing. Fried okra and turnip greens, fabulous. And a small desert bar with peach cobbler like my mom makes.
