I went in on a Saturday to have my bridesmaid dress hemmed. The owner took me immediately and had my dress hemmed in 15-20 minutes. The process was stressless! From what I understand, it's first come first serve so you may have to wait on the side for a bit if she is working with someone else. I had this custom fitted for me before Halloween came around last year. Great service and finished in a timely manner. They left wiggle room for adjusting if I grow or thin out later (hopefully get skinner). The costume is Anakin from Star Wars ep2. This was my first visit to Designer Alterations and LOVED how my dress turned out. The customer service was friendly, knowledgable and so sincere. I felt welcomed the minute I opened the door. The shop is newly decorated in a beautiful and calming blue. There is a changing wardrobe for privacy and seating to wait, if needed. There is plenty of parking in the front of the store and you pay for service before you leave. The cost of alterations is based on the amount of work that needs to be done and very reasonable. The "daughter" of the mother/daughter team was the only one there and even though the pinning ran a little late, she was accommodating. Lucy is a magic worker. Because we had a short engagement, I had to by my wedding dress off the rack. It started as a size 14, but you'd never know it was ever that big. She brought it all the way down to a size 2 and it fits like it was custom made for me. The first fitting was back in July just to make sure she could do all the work it needed done. She then had me come at the beginning of September to do the measurements and start work on the alterations. The first round only took two weeks. We had a few tweaks to make after the second fitting and she got them finished within a week. Lucy's work is flawless and she is so sweet. I can't recommend her highly enough. I've visited DA a few times and I am so pleased every time I go! The ladies have altered 2 items for me and let me tell you, some of the seaming and fabric was not the easiest to work with, but they managed to make an item that was 2 sizes too big with awkward sleeves look sleek and fitted. What is more telling is that I brought in a dress that was too big and asked for it to be modified. One of the ladies examined it and told me that it really couldn't be altered at risk of complete damage of the fabric, and she explained and showed me why. I loved that. While I would rather have had my item altered, if it wasn't possible, I want to know versus waste my time and money. These ladies are so professional and courteous. I will keep coming back. This place is located right near the Kaneohe Feed Store, FYI. They've gotten all my items to me in about 1 week. read more

As you step inside Designer Alterations you are greeted with a bright modern business and a "can do" spirit of Aloha from Lucy; I was impressed with her expertise and friendly professionalism. After having a not-so-great experience with David's Bridal about my wedding dress, Lucy and her mother (please forgive me, I forgot her name! :-( ) made me fall in love with my dress again! ^_^ At David's Bridal, the senior consultant (I would love to mention her name here so future brides won't go to her, but I'll refrain myself for now as this is about Designer Alterations) was good at making me try on a dress she loved (Oleg Cassini) and altered it so that I would love it (made the cap sleeves off-the-shoulder and the neckline into a sweetheart). She made me love it so much that I said yes. I had already given a previous consultant my budget, but apparently this senior consultant hid the price of the dress from me. She also assured me that the dress can be easily altered by a local seamstress to how she altered it with clips. When I went to order, the price of the dress made me sick. She then ordered one size bigger so to give the local seamstress more material to work with. I was so upset when I got my dress because it was WAY TOO BIG and DISGUSTING on me that I didn't even look at it for a couple months. Finally, I searched around and found Designer Alterations. With such high reviews, I knew I had to go to this place! So I did with my mom. Lucy's mother immediately looked at my dress. She got me worried when she started looking very concerned at how the dress was made and sewn. What I got from the consultation is that there were way too many layers, the bodice was too thick, the hem was way too long, and the neckline alteration would mean to take away the beautiful scalloped feature. She concluded that if I wanted what the David's Bridal consultant showed me, it would mean taking apart the entire dress and resewing it back together. I would have to pay about the same amount as the dress itself. She also advised that the consultant should never have ordered a size bigger (from my point of view, now that I think about it, the more a bride has to alter her dress, the more money she has to pay. Keep this in mind brides!!!). She did assure me, though, that the dress is beautiful and that the lace detail is very unique. She convinced me to keep the neckline and tightened the sleeves. The bodice, because it was too thick with layers, was a bit of a challenge, but she pinned it so that it fit just right. The front layers of the dress had to be pinned up one by one (I think there was at least 7 or something like that). The top layer had the scalloped feature like my neckline so instead of chopping it off (she really didn't want to lose that feature of the dress), she pinned it up. The price I paid for hemming, taking in the bodice, and tightening the sleeves was very reasonable due to the amount of detail to my dress. It took about 2-3 weeks to alter, which was fine with me because, believe me, my dress had a lot of lace detail. When she was done, I went back and tried it on. It fit perfectly! The bodice wasn't as tight as I had originally wanted it, but the slight extra room would definitely give me some room to eat and breathe! The front hem of the dress just brushed the ground and I could walk very easily. I'm not a busty girl and am very insecure about my chest area, but the way it looked on me at that point made me forget about my main body insecurity. She then suggested that I do a bustle because the train was so long and people would be stepping on me wherever I go. I didn't question her and said yes. A week later, she was done. I wasn't able to be there to pick it up because I had work, but my mom picked it up and was shown how to do the bustle. I can't wait to try on my dress again!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH, DESIGNER ALTERATIONS, FOR MAKING ME LOVE MY DRESS AGAIN. My one tip for future customers: if you have a dress with a lot of detail on it, please give them at least 2 weeks to alter it to how you want it. They do rush orders, but I highly suggest to give them more time just so they can focus on your dress (or other detailed item of clothing) and work out any kinks that might go along the way. Other notes: - They accept cash & bank cards and payment is due upfront. - They do call you when they are done or need more time. - Parking is a bit tight. - They do what needs to be done and can figure out the problem pretty quickly, so that you're not waiting forever-and-a-day for their comments/suggestions. - If you have a wedding dress, my suggestion would be to go way before or after prom season as there will probably be many last-minute teens and their parents trying to vie for their attention. read more

After reading all the yelp reviews, I was so excited that a 5 star yelp favorite tailor was right in my neighborhood! A note about my review.... I have not been to another tailor on island so this is kind of in comparison to mainland tailors (which may not be 100% fair). I had to get a bridesmaid dress tailored. The mother daughter team seemed pretty nice and mom seemed like she knew what was going on, especially because she didn't seem to want to hear what I wanted-she would do what was best. This was both nice and slightly annoying, but I mostly trusted her. The thing I had the hardest time with was the price. I paid double what I would have paid with any mainland tailor and i have a feeling it was probably not among the cheaper on island. This wasn't a dress I needed or wanted to spend more money on since it won't be worn again. On the bright side, I did get the dress back fairly quickly....it was over a week but they might have had it done by their one weak deadline they give out, I'm not sure since they don't call to tell you it's done. Tip: call at one week to check the status! The fit: the dress mostly fits but after paying around $75, I would have expected a better fit out of this. The mom sort of elected to not change the dress after I expressed reservations at the fitting....I went along with it because it seemed easier and I can handle the dress the way it is, it's just not well fitted. Overall, I'd probably look for cheaper tailors in the future but in a pinch, this convenient and nice business does a decent job. Update: The dress didn't fit at all and wearing it to my best friends wedding was a nightmare. I have looked into prices and seen cheaper tailors on island, so these will be my route next time. I know Hawaii prices can be a "sticker shock ", but over the last 5+years, I've definitely found places that offer competitive prices with great service and tailoring is no exception. read more

This mother-daughter duo does a wonderful job with alterations and are great to work with. I've taken my ill fitted uniforms here a couple of times now and the results have been impeccable each visit. It's always a one week turn around and they somehow manage to not run behind. The nice part is if the daughter isn't too familiar with how to tackle tricky alterations, her mom is usually there with a quick fix...and she's meticulous! Gotta love that! Parking is easy.
