Deseret on Aurora Avenue North in Shoreline has been one of my primary thrift stores over the past 20 years or so. It is close to the house and has served as a place to shop for every day items, clothes, and items for special occasions. Growing up, it was either the first or one of the first places I would go if I needed clothes with a certain functionality, including for school play(s)/costumes, manual labour, and garments to adhere to a certain dress code. Offerings outside of clothing, accessories, and shoes, have yielded neat finds, tending to have breadth and depth in what is available. We have gone through the donations process a few times and the workers have been helpful and dropping items off straightforward. I have encountered a few problems at check-out/payment, though the workers tend to do a good job of handling the issue. Today, Friday 1 September 2023, I got three DVDs at $2.00 each ($6.00 total) and when I went to check out the cashier entered 6, thinking the dollar amount not the number of videos, so I ended being charged double - I would deem this an honest mistake. Fortunately, I caught this before leaving the payment counter. She called another worker over, who called the manager, and they corrected the total and I got the right change. All three of the workers were calm, collected, and professional in conduct.

This place is about 25 minutes away from me and worth the drive. I always find quite a few things and anyone I go with never leaves empty handed. I've gone twice on weekdays and it is busy! Don't these people work? lol I always find nice brands in their clothing and their shoes. Books are all priced under $4. Like most thrift stores, there's a huge religious section. Books are sorted by type of book, but not by author within. Housewares seems smaller than other thrift stores but still have found some treasures. I have a love hate relationship with the clothes. Clothes are sorted by men's, women's & childrens. Within each, some are sorted on racks by size (small-XL) and then there are some racks that are by color and not sorted by size nor is there a tag or something on the hanger to differentiate the sizing. So that can be annoying. They have a few racks for plus size, which is nice to have that sorted out. Dressing rooms are open and are plenty. Prices vary throughout the store but I'd say still cheaper than value village lately.

I've been here a few times and I see something that's pretty cool every time I go. I passed on the dresser in the picture because it needed too much work but if you wanted to put in the effort, this would be a great addition to someone's home. This isn't the first time I've seen some nice mid century furniture here.

Hmm. Where to begin. DI, as us Mormons call it, usually has a better selection in the thrift area but this store just had a lot of overpriced stuff that I didn't find useful. What I do like about them is they give people jobs to help them get rehabilitated. Pretty much 99% of what is at the DI was donated by a Mormon so if you have an issue with that, shop elsewhere. When we don't have a niece/nephew/cousin/sister/brother/uncle/aunt/grandpa/grandpa/mom/dad/fried/co-worker/teacher/neighbor to give our old stuff to, and if it didn't sell on Craigslist, and if it didn't sell at the yard sale, and there aren't any missionaries who want it, then we donate it to the DI. This is the reason why most of the stuff is picked over and kinda off putting, because we use it up till it's dead. Or grandma's dead, and no one wanted it at the estate sale or after the funeral. Just sayin'. I have a friend that is weird and will only wear thrift store clothes because he wants clothes that have already been lived in. (He's an artist, that explains a lot.) I stopped in to see if there was anything I could buy for him. The guy's department was super overpriced. $10 for a pair of used khakis? Say what? Those suckers are $7 at Value Village. They also have women's, juniors and kids clothing but I didn't bother looking for me since everything was looking pretty rough. I did see a section with brand new coats for kids. I roamed around the housewares section and find some ice trays that make the tiny cubes. Three trays for $0.75, sold! The rest just looked like really old and mismatched stuff. At other thrift stores I can find glasses and good plates for art projects, but not here. (Again, the good stuff goes to... you got the idea.) In the back room, they had about a dozen kids bikes, ski equipment, soccer equipment and various yard tools. There were other sports things too. If that's what you're looking for, come here, because I don't see these types of things at any other thrift store except DI. Tons and tons of books here. They also have a whole corner dedicated to kitchen appliances and electronics. Again, it was overpriced. They were asking for $20 for a 15 year old stereo. Come on now. They sell brand new bedroom furniture and mattresses. All sales are final at the DI. The parking lot is good sized. They have a giant metal bar that closes the parking lot when they aren't open. Closed Sundays.

    Those metal hangers!

After 33 years of work, I retired. I rarely visit Goodwill--probably about once every one or two months, usually on Sundays. I buy my clothes and shoes at Costco or on Amazon, where they are actually even cheaper than at Goodwill. Due to my former profession, I suffer from arthritis in both hands; both of my thumbs are quite painful. I find it easier to shop using a handheld basket rather than a shopping cart. Goodwill, however, does not provide handheld baskets--only carts. Whenever I went to Goodwill, I would typically bring along a small plastic bag to hold the items I intended to purchase, and I always paid for everything at the checkout counter. (At Costco, I usually shop with my wife, who pushes the cart.) This had been my routine for the past two years, ever since the arthritis developed in my fingers and I never encountered any issues with it until a new security guard appeared at this particular Goodwill store, a short Black man (who appeared to be an immigrant from North Africa). He noticed the plastic bag I was carrying and summoned the store manager. (This took place around late December 2025, on a Monday.) I do not know what the security guard said to the manager, but the manager approached me, I was in the electronics section at the time and looked inside my plastic bag, which contained two items, each priced at $1.99. The manager (a tall white man) removed the two items from the bag and instructed me to leave the store. I was baffled as to why; he did not accuse me of shoplifting, he simply told me to leave the premises and not to return to this Goodwill store for a period of one year. He offered no explanation for his actions. I certainly do not look like a homeless person; in fact, my clothing was visibly nicer than the manager's own attire. I suspect the security guard probably told him that I was a thief, even though he had absolutely no grounds to do so. I visited this Goodwill a second time six months later--on Sunday, May 17th. I didn't have a plastic bag; I was simply holding three small items in my hands and got in line at the checkout to pay for my purchases. That same security guard spotted me and demanded that I leave the store. I asked, "Why?" He replied that I was a thief and was not allowed to come there. I had been inside Goodwill for about an hour, and he hadn't stopped me when I first entered. I told him that I was standing in line and intended to buy the items I was holding. He made a phone call, brought over a store employee, and instructed all the cashiers not to serve me. In front of everyone, he began accusing me of shoplifting. Never in my entire life have I been insulted or humiliated like this. I took out my wallet and showed him my driver's license, Medicare card, cash, and several credit cards; I swore--more than ten times--that I had never stolen anything in my life. Yet the security guard continued to insist that I was a thief and demanded that I leave the store. As I was leaving, I asked the security guard to tell me his name. He refused and said that he had taken a picture of my license plate number. I am seeking a response from the Goodwill administration regarding the wrongful actions and insults committed by their security guard.

For two days, items are discounted and treasures can be found. Parking is hard to come by. However, if you park at the 145th park and ride, they have a shuttle on Saturday (I'm not sure about Sunday). For furniture pick up, they will let you into the lot to pull up to the doors to make for easy loading and unloading. I saw tons of volunteers and they were all very nice. They were easily identifiable with aprons and were organized pretty well. Food was available from two food trucks and a concession stand run by students. I found great deals in the electronics room including 2 camera lenses, a computer monitor, and 2 robotic dogs for my little guy. At $26 for everything, I got a great deal! I bought a Columbia fleece, Quiksilver pants, and basketball warm ups for my kiddo at the whopping price of $3 for everything. I got tons of kitchen stuff for my sibling that just got a new apartment as well as old school Tupperware, gadgets, and a pruning saw for $13. I spent 5 hours here shopping. If you shop in the morning, you get a $5 off coupon that you can use between 2pm and 4pm. Overall, the prices were very reasonable and I had a great time. On Sunday, you buy a bag (small for $6 or garbage bag for $20) and stuff it full. Electronics and Best of Show items are half price and you can't use the bag on them. 4-stars primarily for the parking situation and the fact that they want you to eat so you will continue to shop but fail to give you anywhere to sit down. This was an issue because of the amount of rain we had that day.

If I was going to pay $10 for a used T-shirt, I could go to Ross and buy a brand new one. Used plates were $5, Ross would be brand new for $5. I'm trying this at that the prices are way over priced. I understand it's all for charity, but the donated items should be sold for a little less. The reason why it wasn't a 1/5 Stars is due to the fact that the last day there are sales. It was 50% off majority of the things and by the end of the day, everything. I was able to find lots of vintage cameras and film for an amazing deal. I would suggest everyone to check out the electronic side because they have the best prices for awesome items. The clothes and everything else isn't worth it until it goes on the half of deal. I would still come back to browse for stuff and definitely check out the electronic section again. As for clothes or home decor, bring your money!!!! It's good that they accept cash and cards!

I brought Gabriel a designer suit that still didn't feel right after store alterations. He was pretty honest--said the best it could become was a 7/10--and then went to work. He adjusted the shoulders, chest, sleeves, lapels, which required him to move every single button. It was literally a completely different suit. And for the first time, it actually fit the way it should. Since then, I've gone back for five custom suits, multiple shirts, and my favorite, an overcoat (which I'd avoided for years because of off-the-rack fit issues). Every item has come out perfectly tailored. If fit has always been a compromise for you, it's worth seeing what Gabriel can do. Adding some photos, but I'm not a fashion/textiles photographer. My posture is very upright and that just makes the chest issue even more difficult. There aren't many places in the US outside of New York that do real bespoke -- patterns cut from scratch. I'm glad I found Gabriel. He has a great understanding of classic men's style and proportions. The suit he made for me is very comfortable and continues to get better as the canvas takes the shape of my body. I keep looking for areas to make micro improvements for my next project with him. But to be honest, the fit is so good I'm not sure there's much to change other than experimenting with other styles, like a double breasted. I plan on commissioning something from him every year as long as I stay in Washington. The super tight, short jacket with the bum exposed, with skinny lapels was trending for a while on off the rack clothing. Even some made to measure places make suits like this. If you are looking for a suit to wear for the next 10 years, I encourage you to give Gabriel a try and have him make something timeless for you.
