I've been dealing with Derek for a couple of years now. Initially buying parts online. Recently…read moreI've undertaken a custom Yamaha project and needed some advice on parts and major engine modifications. Derek has been patient and gone to great lengths to help with tuning advice as well as finding some custom parts. I'll be posting pictures of the finished project soon, and will say I couldn't have done it without Derek's knowledge and expertise. I highly recommend him as source of advice, knowledge encouragement and parts supply!

Disclaimer: I am a complete newb to motorcycles and have not actually used any other motorcycle…read morerepair people other than Derek my whole life. That said, despite the above disclaimer, I am nonetheless a fairly difficult customer to impress. My husband and I are control freaks and perfectionists, though goodness knows we WANT to get excited about finding good services. When we brought ourselves and our dual-sports (WR250X/R) to Derek, based on YELP reviews, I quickly got the impression that 1) he was competent and a perfectionist and 2) he'd not worked on our particular bike before. But the latter didn't really phase him. He took my emails with links to online articles in stride and showed us complete respect despite our lack of experience, and at every stage of the way has made us happy with his attitude and his results. He may sometimes question our judgement when we make a request, but he does it for the right reasons, and in the end he'll still humor us if we get stubborn. So far all our adjustments and repairs have made us very happy, and I've no complaint about the cost of his service (though given the above disclaimer, I may just be too clueless to know if he's ripping us off, heh...wait, I didn't just say that). We'll be going back to him for all our future motorcycle repair/mod needs. Knowing that we're done with the search for a good mechanic is a weight off my shoulders. (Regarding the 1* review...am I Derek's friend? Err, probably not. Not that I think he'd be a bad friend, but, um, I'm just a customer.)

It was the the summer of 2014 and I was blasting across the middle states on my way to New York…read morefrom California when the unthinkable happened. The Hall sensor on my BMW went kaput on the freeway outside of Des Moines and I spent a very rainy night stranded on the side of the road. Fast forward to the next morning, desperately calling everyone in town for the part -- nothing. As a last-ditch effort I expanded my search and contacted VanWall in Indianola. Lo-and-behold they could get the part on order from Germany and even drove up to Des Moines with a trailer to pick me up! From there it just got better. The staff went out of their way to accommodate me, helping me store my luggage and giving me a desk to sit at. A couple of employees, upon hearing my story, even offered to let me stay with them! -- and let's be honest here, a Hall sensor is not exactly a big ticket item. When part came in the next morning the BMW tech had it installed and wired by the time I caught a ride from the manager back into town. Now I'm no spring chicken when it comes to bikes and I've dealt with my fair share of good shops. NONE of them come close to the experience I had with VanWall. If you ride bikes, atvs, or scooters do yourself a favor and pay them a visit!

I tried to order a bolt and a washer from this place. They wanted $14 shipping. I emailed to see…read moreif they'd just toss it into an envelope and mail it to me for a few dollars. They explained their shipping costs are set by the price of items, not by weight and size. I've experienced much better service from other places, so no, I wouldn't recommend these guys.
