Before meeting him, I had visited five other doctors in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, and they all told me that I had a pre-cancerous condition. I am not always an easy patient, but he was so understanding and reassuring throughout the entire process. He also has a great sense of humor, which made me feel much more comfortable. I had previously chosen another doctor but cancelled after speaking to Dr. Nowain because he was head and shoulders better. He was extremely patient, knowledgeable, and reassuring. I had several other friends that highly recommended him. On the day of my procedure, Dr. Nowain was punctual and very comforting as he could tell I was nervous. He has an excellent bedside manner to go with his skills and credentials. The procedure went perfectly, and the doctor was right next to me when I woke up to discuss the results and share pictures with me. All in all, this was an amazing experience with an excellent doctor and I'm glad I did it. I highly recommend this doctor to everyone else. I have very high standards and I'm extremely picky and Dr. Nowain met and surpassed all my expectations. To everyone over age 40, please get colonoscopies. A 30 minute procedure could save your life. And better yet, get it with Dr. Nowain. The research I did showed he was much more effective at catching cancerous polyps than his contemporaries.
I'm keeping my original review for continuity. This update is to show, using my own documentation,…read morehow biased and prejudicial language in medical notes can permanently distort a patient's credibility and access to care. I count myself lucky I met my new GI doctor, although treatment is complicated now because of my worsening injuries. Over the past four years I've had time to study what happened, review my records, and talk with professionals who helped me understand how the bias in my care took shape. The pain I was in left me cognitively impaired for a long time, which made it hard to see how dismissive the treatment really was while it was happening. Because of the wording used in my chart -- phrases like "patient is convinced" and "very likely psychosomatic" -- it's very likely the kind of language that led other doctors to dismiss my concerns and assume the problem was psychological. My injuries worsened, the connective tissue in my abdomen continued to tear, and I lost muscle support through my torso. A genetic condition was also upregulated and my skin permanently traumatized. That language still follows me through my medical record and continues to influence how I'm treated. Nearly four years later, I'm still trying to recover from my injury and the physical and psychological damage caused by dismissive, biased documentation and the prejudice that began in this office. I'm including Dr. Nowain's original notes, and other records that corroborate both the intense pain I was really in, the celiac artery compression and soft tissue damage, and the continual gaslighting using prejudicial language to dismiss my accounts and leave me in pain and suffering. These are all before the injury worsened. I can still hear Dr. Nowain's voice from that day in his office -- angry, certain: "You're having a panic attack!" When I said I wasn't, he replied, "That sounds just like something someone having a panic attack would say." It still plays in my head like I heard it yesterday. So, I guess there's only one thing left to say. Best of luck in all your health journeys, and remember: "One foot in front of the other, bravely forward. Always."

I met him in Northridge hospital ER exactly a year ago when he took care of my elderly mother, admitted with a recurrent upper GI hemorrhage. She had been scoped before, and no source of bleeding had been identified. We had almost lost hope in obtaining a valid diagnosis let alone stopping the bleeding. Providers had given up on my suffering mother and were treating her like a hypochondriac... Then came that young yet fearless Dr. Naim. He acted like the person in charge. He is not someone who will accept missing a diagnosis, and this is a trait so rare nowadays. He studied my mother's extensive imaging history. He also called me and explained elaborately his assessment and plan to me. He is a natural teacher. He scoped my mother and found a 3-mm gastric ulcer that he clipped, and we never saw a trace of that again. So thankful for Dr. Naim's care of my mother who soon later passed away for an unrelated reason. Physicians need to remember that how they treat a patient may be the last act of mercy or battery in the patient's life, and one of the last memories the patient's survivors are left with. God bless your hands Dr. Naim.

When he wants me to do some sort of medical test or take a new prescription he says, "You'll thank me when you're 90 and still healthy!" He is honest, forthright, and kind. He gives excellent referrals when you need a specialist. Dr. Quintana has a computer app that he uses and it is easy and saves a lot of time. I can get any test results at the same time that he does. Unless he has emergencies, he answers any questions I put in the app by the end of the day and I get an email letting me know to look for his answer. We are both on Medicare, which doesn't reimburse very well for visits to internists, so we do have a yearly fee that we need to pay to make up for that. At first I was upset by this, but it has become very normal now for internists to have this fee in order to supplement Medicare. James at the front desk is always cheerful and ready to help.

His office is located in the 3rd street medical towers at Cedar-Sinai, conveniently located to labs and imaging centers if you need any testing. When I first called to inquire about his services, I was told by a receptionist that he does quick consultations over the phone but the fee was a bit ridiculous. Just to confirm that he does offer MAT. I declined and made an appointment as I was desperate. Two appointments later, and still no MAT. He's always running late because he takes his time with each patient. When my lab work came back, I felt he was a little over the top regarding my anemia results. He insisted I go to an ER asap for a blood transfusion and called my colon surgeon to discuss my lab results. After seeing my colon surgeon, he high fived me when I said I felt Dr Jacobs was overly dramatic. Obviously, my surgeon felt similar. Actually, he said the same thing. He was also annoyed because Dr Jacobs performed a rectal exam and my surgeon said NO ONE but a specialist in gastroenterology should be doing that kind of exam on a patient with lower GI issues or disease. I had already felt uncomfortable during the exam, and after hearing that, I felt more violated. Even my husband was surprised. It's like, Stay in your lane! Nearly $1000 spent trying to get treatment for one thing, and I left with zero MAT and a rectal probe and a lot of what I felt was hysteria. Conversely, my gastroenterologist (not to be confused with colon surgeon) thinks highly of him, so it is up to you to take your chances. My mother reported ongoing stomach pain for approximately three months and repeatedly sought help. During one of her visits, she specifically asked about her pancreas and whether everything looked okay. She was told it was "fine" and was prescribed antibiotics because she had SIBO. No imaging was ordered to further evaluate her persistent symptoms. Months later, she was diagnosed with what appears to be advanced pancreatic cancer. I understand that not every patient with abdominal pain has pancreatic cancer, and I know hindsight is easier than diagnosis. However, persistent symptoms deserve a thorough evaluation, especially when a patient continues to express concern and specifically asks about her pancreas. We were left feeling that her concerns were dismissed rather than fully investigated. I hope this review encourages the practice to listen carefully to patients, take persistent symptoms seriously, and consider appropriate imaging or specialist evaluation when the clinical picture doesn't improve. No family should be left wondering whether an earlier workup could have made a difference.
