Condescending and doesn't care. I had had 2 colonoscopies with him and was having symptoms. I reached out to him for help. He didn't run any tests and actually told me I was his "Problem Child" because I was asking him to help me get to the root of the symptoms. Because he is allegedly "highly regarded", I thought there was nothing I could do about the debilitating condition. I went to Dr. Lewis for my next visit. He LISTENED, ORDERED TESTS, got me TREATED, and gave me my life back! He was very responsive to my questions and even consulted with a specialist in my condition to ensure that I was getting the correct treatment. I suffered needlessly for a very long time because Dr. Stein didn't bother to do what, as a doctor, are the basics: Listen to the patient, order necessary tests, and treat the patient. Sadly, I do not recommend this arrogant doctor who didn't bother to help a patient with clearly defined symptoms that needed testing and treatment. read more

Dr. Stein is truly one of the best doctors I've ever known. He is thoughtful, responsive, and just top-notch! I have been a patient for decades, and his dedication to patient care is unmatched. It is true that his appointments are generally several months out, which speaks volumes about how highly he is sought after. However, the quality of care is worth the wait. In fact, I referred a friend to him who had a very negative experience--she got quite sick after a colonoscopy appointment elsewhere. She was so happy and relieved with her experience under Dr. Stein's care, confirming that he provides a superior level of service. While I have occasionally had problems with the office logistics--specifically, being deprioritized or placed at the end of the queue because I didn't require frequent visits--Dr. Stein himself has always handled things with exceptional personal care. When I brought the issue to his attention, he proactively gave me his personal email and told me to reach out directly if I ever needed to see him urgently. This kind of responsive, patient-first approach is what makes him so outstanding. He even fit me in immediately when I was about to have an insurance lapse. No one picks up phone, leave messages with no call backs. One lady did call back and said would send documents that I never received! Totally unresponsive and uncaring! I had a serious emergency and Dr. Stein's office took over a week to call me back to get scheduled. He was kind enough to give me his personal cell at one time, since he at the time was well aware of a particular employee who the entire office was aware of her rude and curt manner. He is an exception physician, however his office staff seems to have changed and not in a good way. I was referred to another Doctor who realized how urgent the situation was, and had me in the procedure in the hospital within three days, which included a weekend. Really a shame when a good Doctor is foiled by his own staff. Either he forgot to tell his staff, or they choose to not to realize the urgency of the issue. read more

I cannot speak on his intelligence or capabilities as a doctor. But his bedside manner is the worst I have ever encountered. He was the most condescending and dismissive doctor I have ever met. I am extremely disappointed by the absolute poor service at Dr. Stein's office. My wife has been trying to get a prescription for a medication related to Crohn's Disease for six weeks. Dr. Stein may well be a great Doctor, but if you can't get what you need from his office staff, it simply a very frustrating waist of time! Do yourself a huge favor and go somewhere else, maybe they will actually provide care for you. He should be ashamed of himself and now that the Crohn's has had time to flair completely up, it is going to be even harder to get her stable. I've been trying to get an appointment at this office for 2 months and was sent to the wrong address by one of the staff members. I called the office to tell them I was running late but instead they turned me away and said that I have to wait another two months. After a horrid ordeal with physicians at Kaiser, (took over 3 months to get the results of an annual check up and a doc who never replied), I searched high and low for a doctor who doesn't treat their patients like another number. Given that I was looking for a specialist in this case, made things even harder. My first step was to get rid of that sorry excuse of a health insurance provider, Kaiser, and get a PPO. Then I thought, since, I'm going down that route, why not go with the best? Cedar Sinai it is. If its good enough for Britney, its damn well good enough for me. =) I found Dr Stein on Cedar Sinai's list of GI specialists - and as with most Yelpers (and me being a recruiter), I did some research online. He recieved his master's from UC Davis, residency at the VA Medical Center, and fellowship from UCLA. His 19 year tenure at Cedars also proves he's doing something right! Without hesitance, I booked an appt with any fuss. I found Dr Stein to be friendly yet caring, reassuring, and more than capable during my visit. Pleasently surprised, I asked him to refer a Primary Physician who was "like him" - ie. responsive and caring - and he promptly pointed out Dr Janet White as a possibility. Dr Stein delievered (neg) news with care but without alarm. He made sure I knew his was readily available via phone or email if I had any questions. This was particularly important as my "ailment" required frequent checkup visits and I like to know my results! Like most better doctors, he took the time to get to know me a bit ('what did I do' and 'how did I like it', etc) but also took it a step beyond by discussing my case with other specialists. Saves me time, money, and a seperate trip to get a second opinion! I highly recommend Dr Stein if you're looking for a gasteroenterologist specialist and will continue to fight tooth and nail to keep my PPO! Dr. Stein literally saved my life. I would recommend him to anyone. I first came into his office almost five years ago while I was seemingly losing the battle with ulcerative colitis. But, with the help of Dr. Stein, I was in remission within a year and I've stayed in remission for the past 4 years! He truly changed my life and I could not be more grateful. Not only is he extremely well versed in the medical and scientific aspects of his work, but he takes the time to explain clearly what's going on and present it in terms of solutions rather than just defining the problem. I couldn't get into see Dr Stein as the wait was so long. So they made an appt with physicians assistant Mariana Fayman. She is WONDERFUL! Really like her, I don't have to wait weeks to get scheduled to see her, she is available for questions through email and always responds quickly - which is brilliant by the way, if only we could drop a line to all doctors with a quick question! And, the upside is, she is just like a doctor except she cannot do procedures, so when I needed a procedure I scheduled it with Dr Stein - who was also wonderful. In fact the entire team from the nurse to the doctors at Cedars Sinai where I had the procedure were exceptionally nice, caring and sweet. First time in my life I had a local anesthetic for the site where the IV would be inserted!! We went to see Dr. Stein when my wife was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. We were very depressed and had lost hope due to our own online research and the terrible experience and reaction from previous doctors that we had gone to. When we went to Dr. Steins office everything changed... This great man walked into the room with a smile on his face. He was super calm and polite. He listened to what we had to say and then started talking about his longtime UC patient that just had a baby and how he was able to control the inflammation of that patient. This gave us hope and made us feel better. Then he started explaining about UC and told us how we can control it. My wife had a long list of questions that Dr. Stein answered with patience. He was able to control the inflammation in 3 months! He is very tech savvy and communicates through email. I was actually shocked how fast he responds to emails. Since we had to drive 20 miles to see him, he told us that we can always email him to ask questions and only visit in cases of emergency. This man is a great human being and a great doctor. On my first colonoscopy some years ago, Dr. Stein saved my life by finding and removing precancerous growths. That was a big scare and big trouble averted. On my second colonoscopy a few days ago, I was 100% improved and needed no growth removal. I've already marked the date in my calendar to call for a recheck in five years. I had no trouble getting through to his staff and they were friendly and professional. This was a life changing appointment. Although it took nearly a month to see the good doctor, it was well worth the wait. I have suffered from life altering stomach issues, many of which people are ignorant of or refuse to believe, considering I look healthy on the outside. I tend to suffer silently, as I have too much pride to play the role of the victim. Also, I have little patience trying to convince people of these issues. So while they are in denial, I suppose I was, too, and did not pursue good follow up care, thus resigned to a lifetime of compromised health. I had accidentally arrived a day before my actual appointment, but the doctor squeezed me in. I waited patiently, understanding this was a courtesy. I did not have to wait too long. Let me point out that the walls are kind of thin, either that, or the people in the next room were extremely vocal. Not to laugh at the woe of others, but - shit happens. The doctor finally met with me and I felt an immediate rapport. Sympathetic, a good listener, and genuinely concerned for my well being without rushing through the appointment. So far, so good. I ended up spending a good two hours or more at the office. He ran a series of tests, took some biopsies, talked over options, and his belief that I should be living a higher quality of life reignited confidence and hope. HOPE. Something that had long been lost. He prescribed a month's worth of medication and sent me on my merry way. I'm usually slack about filling prescriptions but it was the first thing I did before I arrived home. The next day I took it as instructed. I was still skeptical as the only thing that truly works is Percocet and who wants to get addicted to that, but - BUT - It worked. Mind you, this was not some groundbreaking new stuff, but something that has been prescribed for a very long time. The difference was like NIGHT AND DAY. I feel HOPE. It was like a gift from God, only it was called Big Pharma. I am able to eat what I want to eat and not be a slave to the whims of my stomach. I am terrified of the possibilities in life that have reemerged, and I am terrified it will stop working, and I'll wake up from this dream. Perhaps the saying is true - Sometimes it takes the devil to do God's work. Thank you, Dr. Stein. Thank you so very much. I am still walking around in a daze. I met and had a consult with Dr. Stein. I really liked him and was VERY confident about placing my care in his hands. Then I tried to schedule. Getting through to ANYONE in scheduling was very difficult. I believe a have made 5 or 6 calls to the office. One call was returned with a number that is no longer in use. Another message was taken by a very friendly staffer named Judy who really seems like she cared. She left a message with the "scheduling department" to call me. That was on a Wed. No return call. I call on Monday and wait for a solid 15 min on hold. After an inital screening call, I was picked helped by Illiana. While I am sure she is a nice person, Illiana showed very little understanding, empathy (or interest) that I have been having a difficult time scheduling. When I asked her if there was a nurse I could discuss the prep with, she said that she was it. At this point I am going to go back to my primary for another recommendation. Not because I have anything negative to say about Dr. Stein, but because I am uncomfortable putting myself in the care of an organization that seems to have so little empathy towards me. And that is _before_ I submit to the procedure which I already have anxiety about. read more

Dr. Stein performed a procedure on me last year. Afterwards, with complications, he was not willing to see me and told me I was "wasting my time" by contacting him or his partner and that I should just go to the ER were someone else could deal with it, even though they would not know my case at all. His office has been extremely unhelpful and after two months, still has not contacted me with the results of the procedure. I do NOT recommend going through this office as it is one of the worst experiences I have had. I promise you I am not just a picky person or not tolerable to pain. so continuing on my trend of reviewing services/service providers, i want to let everyone know how great dr. stein is. nobody likes going to the doctor, but if you need a good gastroenterologist, dr. stein is the way to go. now, i know i could make some witty remarks about going to the GI doc, but i'll spare you. i am a medical professional myself, so i like to think i have a sense of who the real gems are in the field, and dr. stein is one of them. i was referred to him for a consultation and found him to be very personable, which i think really comes through in his interactions with patients. he explained his medical opinion to me in a thorough but clear manner and described all of my options on the matter. i decided to have a minor procedure done, and while it wasn't really a big deal, i felt very comfortable throughout the whole thing. and to top it all off, he was very reassuring about making sure i had his contact information, and that i could get directly in touch with him at anytime should anything come up without necessarily having to through my PCP (which he has the authority to do under my health plan). he answered all of my questions, took his time in the process, and was really knowledgeable (ie, up on EBM). the overall experience was so positive that it almost made me want to go back to get many, many more procedures done. i should note that his office is very nice and modern, too. staff is friendly, too. only downside is that they don't reimburse for parking, so i recommend trying to find street parking on the other side of la cienega. read more

A couple of years ago I had a scare with laryngopharyngeal reflux and possible cancer. Dr. Stein communicated exceptionally. He provided me with his email address to ask him questions. And answer them he did. This made the process easier. He clearly outlined my options, and pushed his office staff to get me the fastest possible tests dates. The tests were done perfectly and ruled out cancer. I still live with an issue from the reflux but that is not the fault of Dr. Stein. Why I'm giving him this review today is because I recently reached out to him on behalf of my mother who lives in another state and has a very serious condition. Not only was Dr. Stein responsive with referrals right away... He professed empathy and care. Dr. Stein isn't my primary, we've only interacted a handful of times and it has been a while... I am very appreciative of this type of care. Thank you Dr. Stein. Dr. Stein is THE GI doc to go to in LA, no question about it. He's the 3rd GI doc I've tried, and he is head and shoulders above the others. He has a nice bedside manner, and his office is run very efficiently. He was also mindful about prescribing drugs and tests that would likely be covered by my insurance plan -- that isn't his job to do that, and I really appreciated his consideration. NOTE: With any medical need, I definitely recommend checking coverage with your insurance. That's our responsibility as patients/customers. In my case, Dr. Stein had ordered a test that would have cost hundreds more to do within Cedars vs. a different in-network provider a couple miles away. read more

Well i must have seen Dr. Stein's brother because he certainly wasnt the doctor described in these reviews. he was smiling but i would imagine that's a permanent smile with not much underneath. He came highly recommended so i was hopefull that he could do something for my chronic reflux and newly apparent ulcer. He was more than a disappointment. Given prilosec has depleted a lot of my bones over the years of overuse, he didn't seem to have much in his tool chest to treat this condition. he seems to think a chronic sore throat is a pretty livable condition -- it actually is -- and i should just live with it. he didn't seem interested in the ucler at all until the end of the visit when i asked him again about it. he conceded to a h-pilori test but i left without it. his indifference was maddening. He addressed most of his comments about my reflux to his resident rather than to me which was pretty insulting. at one point he just started poking me in the abdomen to demonstrate how food digests or some such nonsense. found the poking unnecessary and inappropriate. as he was leaving he noticed i was holding my hand in a strange position and asked to see my hands. i thought "oh, something at last" but no he simply pointed out again to his resident that i was holding my hand funny and should she see this coloring on someone "it is not liver cancer". wth did that have to do with anything i came to see him for. i was used as a teaching prop and a not very good one at that.
