Had been there in the past for the fish fry and decided to take some friends. When we walked in the door on a Friday night, atleast 3/4 of the tables were open. We sat ourselves. Took at least ten minutes before we were acknowledged. When our food came, you could tell the frozen corn had been boiled all day. The fish portion was tiny, the prime rib was tough. We each had about ten french fries on our plate. The waitress didn't come back until we hunted her down to pay our bill. While we were waiting for our waitress, another couple came in and left because they were not acknowledged. We were disappointed that we stayed. We will never go back and wouldn't recommend this to anybody. read more

Tonight was probably one of the worst. Went for taco Tuesday. Only one waitress ( she did great) ordered 3 regular tacos the hamburger was burnt so bad! Looked like 2 day old meat hard as a rock and black. Waited an hour for food as we watched the cooks eat their food and have a beer. The corn bowl advertises Cajita ( cotija ) cheese dried parmigiana is not cotijo and caned corn not worth 4.00 . I can buy a can of corn for a dollar and dried parmigiana for 4bucks . I have been visiting the Derby Grill for over 10 years. Their bar tender and waitress Kelly WAS simply the best. I say "WAS" because the recent new ownership fired Kelly. This is completely beyond me as Kelly being at the Derby brought in a lot of business. Too bad for me, my biker buddies and for a lot of other folks who had gotten used to Kelly's impeccable service. The food. Stopped in for a quick bite. Our first time there. My wife had the BLT which was AWESOME. Tons of bacon, fresh tomatoes and lettuce. Who doesn't love tons of bacon? I ordered the appetizer sampler. Everything was deep fried, as expected. Most (onion rings, mozzarella sticks) seemed frozen from a bag, but were perfectly cooked. Wing sauce was original and good. Brought home the steak and shrimp for my son. He devoured it without comment. I assume that means it was good. Summary: food is cheap, and you get what you pay for. This is not an extravagant place. It is a place where the food is good enough. The atmosphere. This is a friendly place where everybody knows everybody. Everybody is laughing, talking loud. Hugging, shoulder rubbing, etc. That is an awesome thing if you are one of the "everybody". When you are part of the "nobody" you kinda feel like that, but this is to be expected. Summary: hang around here long and it seems like you won't be a nobody for long. Lots of friends in the house. The Covid concerns. Back to the hugging, shoulder rubbing, etc. Did I say this is a touchy place? It is. It is also a place that doesn't seem to care about masks. No one that walked in had a mask. No one that left had a mask. No one that went to the bathroom. No one that came back from the bathroom. The wait staff, no masks. The kitchen staff, no masks. The guys standing and drinking at the bar where there were no barstools, no masks. In fact, the staff welcomed them to grab stools and go ahead and have a seat at the bar. Summary: if you think the Covid thing is bull, this is your place. If you are scared about this, stay away. Here's what it comes down to... this place isn't for everyone. Whilst living within the lovely community that is berthoud, the options for a nice dinner out are scarce. This is why I made the hard decision to eat at a biker bar. Many a time I have seen the local biker gangs indulging in their drinking parties and gatherings at this establishment. Seeing as all the bikers gathered here regularly I wrongly made the assumption that the food had to be ok. And boy was I mistaken. Stepping into the facility I was overcome with a sense of unwelcome. Possibly due to my formal attire (something they have never seen) or my lack of a motorcycle. Either way a bad start. Figuring it was just me I sat down and ordered a burger and fires. Seeing as this is something few people can screw up it must be alright. The service was good my waitress Kelly seemed nice. Getting my food I came to the daunting realization that not only was the bun smashed clearly with a hand print. But it has mold on it! Was this just a mistake? Or a way to tell me to not come back. I'll take the ladder. Being fed up with this place I left and will not return! It may be good for the local biker gangs but not for casual food! read more

The worst breakfast ever. Didn't think anyone was still cooking pigeon eggs but I guess I was wrong. Omelet was 3 bites, deep fried potato cubes (around 12) and toast that had thumb impressions. Im glad to know that the cooks hands are clean after he manhandled my bread. The only other patrons here were professional drinkers at 9 am. Not a place for food at any time. He served an underaged girl alcohol and when the young lady asked where to pay Jason walked around the bar put his arm around the girls waist, looked her up and down and said "how do u wanna pay." It's an upgraded diner/dive bar/biker hangout/ it's quirky and a great value. Limited menu but it's priced economical and it's consistently solid food. Outside pet friendly patio, caters to a biker type crowd with great parking. Very friendly staff and patrons. Service can be slow, often times the bartender is the server and you have to take your drinks to them to get refills. But honestly it fits with the laid back atmosphere. Tasty! read more

We went on Friday for the fish and chips. Cod is very good, but I wasn't a fan of the walleye. Probably not a fan of walleye anywhere. Anyway, it was darn cold in there and the waitress said they had turned the furnace off! It was about 18 degrees outside. Cost saving measure? So anyway, if the food came out hot, it wasn't hot for long. I think if you are looking for a watering hole and plan to spend the evening, the wait staff would be friendly. For non drinkers, not so much. Our last visit, on a Friday lunch about 1 pm, the service was SLOW. Waitress said that they just had one cook and her working thus the slow service. We waited about 45 minutes for our meal. While the fish and chips are good, they aren't any cheaper than many places. Atmosphere is bar like, not fancy. The AVOL Honor Guard had their annual dinner at the Derby Grill tonight. It was pathetic. My husband ordered prime rib medium rare. It was served cold and mostly inedible. The baked potato was hard as a rock and cold. My walleye was also over cooked and cold. Granted, there were thirty of us, but we're not going to give them our business again. We all paid for our own drinks, and I must say, the male bartender was excellent! Other than that, we were not impressed! Cheap beer, full bar, great burgers and fries, and Karaoke every Friday night! The Derby Grill is the kind of place that might seem intimidating the first time you walk in, if you're not either (1) a regular or (2) a greasy biker. But don't let that stop you - the staff and regulars are both very friendly. Make no mistake, this place is a dive bar by most estimates, but welcoming, fun and reasonably clean. The burgers are the best in town for sit-down burgers (A&W would have to be the best take-out), I highly recommend The Duke - grilled onions and BBQ sauce. They are served with coleslaw and fries, both acceptable. They have chicken too, and fish and chips on Friday nights. The cheapest beer on tap in town is Old Style at $1.50 a pint (as of May 07). It isn't much to look at, or even taste, but it's cheap and it gets you where you need to be on a Friday night. And where you need to be on a Friday night is at the Derby for karaoke, from 9pm or so until closing. This is a lot of fun, even if you're not a karaoke type of person. You have a strange mix of clientle, from retired farmers and yokels, to high school drop outs, to bikers, to yuppies and empty-nesters, and depending on the Friday, lots of in between. The karaoke is run by a really nice Elvis impersonator or his attractive daughter. They have an enormous catalog of songs, and the crowd is almost always small enough and drunk enough to Bondo out any rough edges in your singing. If you're stumped on what to sing, try some crossover gold like Johnny Cash or the Charlie Daniels Band. At the same time, you'll find even some regulars humming along with Madonna. They are very kid-friendly, with even a kids menu. They often have the big game on their big-screen TV, or will put it on by request. They now offer weekend breakfasts, which are decent though not stellar. The breakfast burrito is usually a good bet. They also offer a large patio with seating and lights. This is where the smokers congregate now that Colorado has a full smoking ban. Depending on your tastes this is either really good or really bad. They have a juke box with a good mix of genres. In the summertime, the Derby hosts at least one very big bike rally, and they often have a full stable of choppers out front on any given sunny weekend afternoon. My biggest gripe is that they do not offer any dessert options on their small menu. For some reason after a burger, fries and a handful of beers, I just feel like a brownie or something. Maybe they need a special license to serve dessert. Also on weekdays they close up shop around 9pm, which is just pathetic for anybody from a big city, or even Fort Collins. I have been burned a few times by this, but it is understandable given the small size of Berthoud. read more

The "Derby Grille" is a "Cheers" sort of place to us. We go there 3-5x per month. The food is good, the service staff are awesome people, and the patrons are some of the best folks I've ever met. Management at the Derby know how to keep their patrons happy! Yes, especially during the summer, you will see some bikers there but none are 'greasy' as described by another reviewer. Stopped in as a stop on a Motorcycle Poker Run. Very strong coffee. Decent biscuits and gravy. I could have used one more biscuit for the amount of gravy, but I didn't think of that until after I left. Not at all greasy. Attentive staff. Killer neighborhood bar. Lots of space inside and out, very friendly bartenders and waitstaff, good selection of spirits, and whoever is cooking in the kitchen really knows their business. The menu is extensive and includes a lot of normal neighborhood diner food, not just bar food. Everything is cooked perfectly from what appears to be super fresh ingredients. But look even closer: they shake things up and make it their own. The derby wings and the poor boy salad are excellent examples, and it doesn't stop there. I've only been once, but this is a prime candidate for another local spot in the running for a fifth star. I will gladly drive 20 minutes out of my way to go back to the Derby. read more

We go here a couple times a month, it's a nice little local hang out - I won't say it's a trendy "dive bar" though :) The staff is ALWAYS great, and everything is very reasonably priced. I almost always get a burger when I go, and it's a "double" patty. They appear to be pre-made frozen patties, but at least they aren't the cheapie kind so they're good enough. Most items seem to be pre-made/packaged restaurant items. So expect the food to be good, but it's not great. They are "color friendly" if you're looking for a place, and as I said the everything is reasonably priced and the service is always great. Well worth coming to, even if only for drinks. read more

Decided to give this place a try, although the interior is your basic dive bar, the food was excellent. We questioned the kid friendly aspect but the staff were amazingly accommodating and made us feel welcome. They had table football and air hockey for the kids. Tasty food, super friendly, good prices! We stopped in last night on our way back from Ft. Collins. It was a bit out of the way, and definitely has a bar look from the outside. At night we had to pause because of the bar look, but as other reviews mentioned it was kid friendly and well worth the stop. We sat in one of the booths with our three kids and were treated with some great small town Colorado hospitality. I had the Derby Dip, and really enjoyed it. They have a fish fry every Friday, with both cod and walleye, but it sounds like you have to get there early because the food is so popular. They also have lots of live music. We also learned that the Derby offers a safe-drive home service, just in case you've had too much to drink (maybe next time.) I'm not sure the Derby warrants four stars in comparison to a larger-city upscale place based on atmosphere or food alone, but if you are looking for a super friendly neighborhood bar/restaurant, I don't think you'll be disappointed. read more
