Kalin & Po Moving and Storage

We used Kalin & PO twice during our recent move, first from San Francisco to Treasure Island, and…read morethen from Treasure Island to Oakland. Both experiences were excellent. The first crew, Vladimir and Luis, handled our furniture and boxes efficiently and professionally. They worked quickly and got our entire 2 bed, 2 bath packed up and into self storage in under five hours, which was impressive. The second time, William and Max helped us move to Oakland. They were on time, organized, and clearly experienced. We were out of self storage and in our new home in under four hours. Moving is inherently stressful, but they made the process far smoother than expected. I would absolutely use Kalin & PO again. Highly recommend.

They dealt with some bulky and heavy items down stairs at both houses without complaint or incident. I would definitely call on them again if we have the need. The only reasons for 4 stars rather than 5: minus 1/3 a star for insisting on cash and charging extra for electronic (not debit or credit card, mind you, just Zelle or Venmo). To me, this is an annoying trend in smaller businesses. Minus 1/3 a star for all three movers spending about 40 minutes trying to reassemble a sleeper sofa - that was a lot of cash burned! They had taken it apart much more quickly, and should have kept in mind how it went back together. And minus 1/3 a star for leaving all of the wrap used (which was a lot, but justified, I think, because there was no damage to any of our items) for us to dispose of. They did put it into a couple of big trash bags that we provided, but we still need to get rid of it.

However, something happened during the move that really soured the whole thing for me. While the movers were setting down one of my chairs (a wooden family heirloom) in the new place, the chair was dropped. I heard a loud crack. I immediately asked, "Did that chair break?" and the mover told me no. A few minutes later, I came back and saw that the leg had, in fact, been snapped in half and someone had taped it back together with packing tape, as if I wouldn't notice. The chair would have completely collapsed if someone sat in it without knowing. I brought it up right away and was told I'd get a call from the manager, which I did. He explained that their insurance covers 60 cents per pound for damaged items, which would amount to maybe $11 for this chair. He did say to send an email and maybe we could figure something else out, which I appreciated--but honestly, the bigger issue for me was the lack of honesty. Mistakes happen, but trying to hide it rather than owning up to the damage was incredibly frustrating. This chair has sentimental value to me, and the way it was handled, both physically and in terms of accountability, was disappointing. I can't recommend this company based on that experience.

I've never had a great experience with movers, until now. And their pricing was very competitive and there's no hidden fees! Linda was extremely communicative with coordination and flexible when we needed to make last minute changes, which made the moving process stress-free. On moving day, the crew Leo and Miao, handled a three-story move with heavy furniture and tight doorways with care and efficiency. I was actually very impressed by how they communicated to each other and they are both very strong! Every item was carefully wrapped and protected, nothing was damaged, and they worked quickly while staying professional. On top of that, they were genuinely fun to work with and made us laugh and smile during the move. Highly recommend Lucky Moving! I'll be using them again and recommending them to everyone I know.

Linda responded to my inquiry and she responded quickly whether it was through Yelp, email or text. Linda answered all my questions and was upfront with their pricing. They had the most reasonable prices compared to other companies I called. I was getting conflicting numbers and we exchanged messages back and forth. The starting rate is $139 per hour, $60 for gas, and $10-15 tip per hour, per mover. Anything past the reserved time would be charged in 15 minute increments. I didn't want to go with this route and reserved 5 hours. During the date of my move, only three movers were available. The scheduled time was 8 am but they arrived early. The lead mover showed me the paper work with their arrival time. This made it easy for us to remember to check the clock once it's getting to the 5 hour mark. They assessed the items that needed to be moved and they brought out these blue large plastic container to cover our items or be filled. The movers worked in different areas of the house. While one took are of wrapping items, the other used their dolly to haul items to the truck, and the third mover rearranged items in the truck. The staff spoke broken English. I met the truck to the new location and they got started with unloading ASAP. They would ask which items would go in which room. Assembly and disassembly were things they could do, but since our items were scattered, we opted out of this. They worked efficiently and were done by 4 hours. Besides the hourly rate, the other charge was $10 for the shrink wrap used on my larger items. After unloading, I paid in cash and gave each of the movers a good tip.

Added bonus: the move came to just over 500.00 for a move from El Cerrito to Oakland. A few years ago, Starving Students did the reverse move in 5 hours and charged me more than double. I'd move again just to have this level of service!

Not sure how I drew the short end of the stick with this one…read more.. I hired Jay's Small Moves for a packing job only. I had alternative plans for the moving portion. My packers came on time and ready to go and finished in close to the quoted time. That's where the positiives end. I needed help due to physical limitations and I feel like I've been taken for a ride. Everything I owned had been haphazardly shoved into boxes with minimal padding (and in some cases, my own clothing used as padding). Things were sloppily labeled and it took me weeks to wort thru all of the boxes labeled vaguley (i.e. "Closet Stuff", "Kitchen") with no further indication of what was actually in most boxes. My laptop was shoved into a box without padding and pressed against the cardboard. It's now dented and wont turn on. Empty boxes from the pantry and essentially trash had been packed away, even though I requested no perishables or open items be packed. Items of note that were thrown into a box without care/packaging: - glass scale - my MacBook Pro (not functioning anymore) - culinary spray bottle (broke) - dirty pans from the stove (I requested these be left on the stove for future use) - matching shoes in DIFFERENT boxes - various office/computer electronics (jostling around, no padding) I still need to do a full audit of damages caused by careless packaging, but just the laptop and immediately noticeable damaged office equipment is thousands of dollars of damage. So the realtively affordable packing job costed me much more than anticipated in damages, time, and overall effort. If you hire these guys, you'll need to watch them like a hawk and I pray you're not disadvantaged in a way they think they can take advantage of.
