Some time later I requested that Decatur Smiles review my 2026 dental plan options, as I was thinking of making a change and wanted to know what plans they'd accept. My request was quickly dismissed but I pressed on and asked if Decatur Smiles would at least call Humana, which they did. An inexcusably lengthy VM message and follow up text explained that essentially the practice is not in network with any dental plan but would file for benefits on your behalf. Today I received an email from Humana clarifying the dental coverage in line with a point I had made some weeks earlier; I passed it on routinely as a matter of information. I received the following text in response: "Unfortunately, I spent some quality time with a representative last Thursday, explaining the situation & giving her the dental code programs that you had sent us last week. At this point, because of the continuous discrepancies we are encountering, the only solution would be for you to pay in full as a self pay, and then we will provide you with the documentation & dental codes, so that you may self submit. Your insurance is just that, a contract between you and them. We are only the 3rd party payee. If this is not acceptable, please let us know if you would like to cancel your appointment for November 20th. Thank you!" So basically Decatur Smiles told me to go **** myself. What do you think?

Since the practice relocated and Dr. Koch took over, it's been a steady and disappointing decline. Dr. Koch took over the practice and it's completely gone downhill since they've moved. She hasn't personally examined my teeth in years, except for brief check-ins for orthodontic treatment. Most of my visits have been with Dr. Mondani, who completely lacks chair-side manner and shows zero warmth or connection. Every interaction now feels rushed, impersonal, and transactional. It's clear the focus is no longer on patient care--it's on moving people in and out as fast as possible. The new office space mirrors the cold, detached experience: sterile, industrial, and uninviting. It's the perfect metaphor for how the practice now operates--clinical and profit-driven, with none of the comfort or care you'd hope for in a family dental office. One of the other issues that adds to the decline of this place is that they no longer validate the parking for a full visit. They only validate for 1 hour and they have NEVER actually gotten me in and out within an hour so I have a pay a balance when I leave. It's only a few dollars but it's quite an annoyance. Another huge issue is the turnover is staff, clearly there is an issue with how they treat their employees as well because the tech turnover is insanely high. I haven't seen the same tech more than twice in a row and I'm trying to get to know a new tech each time. This used to be a dental office I trusted and recommended. Not anymore. I went to Tend due to being new to the area and having a dental emergency of a chipped tooth. My…read moreother dental office is three hours away and closed due to weather so I couldn't get my x-rays sent immediatly. Everyone was very kind and professional- greeting, check in and scheduling was all fine. Where Tend falls apart is the integration into a giant dental machine where people are treated in a pipeline and not really treated on a patient by patient basis. They require as a new patient full dental X-rays of your entire mouth because you are new to the practice. They will not clean or provide any service without these X-rays. I understand this is their policy but in my situation having my recent x-rays sent was not possible the day of the appointment. I also just had x-rays performed at my other office and I do not want another does of repeat radiation or the additional, unnecessary cost. Again, this is the business policy, not necessarily the dentist. Unfortunately my chip needed to be evaluated and so I asked if the dentist would still be willing to even look at the chip in my enamel. They said the dentist could look at it but he would require an X-ray before he would even look at the tooth. I asked if he could even look at it superficially- I have no pain, I believe it's a simple enamel chip (My teeth hit each other while I was chewing, there was no traumatic injury to my face or mouth and no previous work done on this tooth). The dentist would not look at my tooth without preliminary X-rays. The thing about visiting Tend is that they will ask you (or your insurance) to pay quite a bit up front to even have the *privilege* of even speaking with a dentist there about an issue. I CLEARLY understand X-rays would be necessary to give a complete evaluation and create a care plan for my teeth. I was asking for a conversation with the actual dentist so I could prepare for then necessary x-rays and potential treatment plans. Tend's answer was "no". Requiring X-rays for anyone to even look at my mouth feels like "gotcha' medicine to me. Once they 'gotcha' for the X-rays you are already established and locked in for the treatment plan. I don't know my assigned dentist, I have never worked with them. I need to at least meet the dentist instead of trusting in a giant dental conglomerate oriented making money and not patient care. There's lots of other dentists who will talk to patients in Buckhead before start a comprehensive treatment plan. I suggest going to them before going to Tend. I wasn't impressed with the way patients are treated at Tend: with treatment plans and rules that are oriented around dollars, not people.
