Denny's on Harbison in Columbia is a diner done right. The building itself has that retro chrome look that makes it shine, and stepping inside feels like walking into a classic American diner. We were greeted right away by the hostess and seated immediately. Our waitress came over promptly, brought our drinks, and took our order without delay. The food was excellent. Pancakes were fluffy, eggs were cooked exactly as ordered, and the bacon was extra crispy--just the way we like it. The syrup poured slow, but it had good flavor. We enjoyed the tea so much that we even got a to-go cup; it was brewed fresh in-house with real fruit, giving it a nice, natural flavor. Our server was fantastic from start to finish, making sure everything was just right. Where things fell short was cleanliness. The metal edge of our table had smears and handprints left behind, and the racks between tables had a noticeable layer of dust. Outside, the chrome appliqués on the windows aren't sealed, which allows debris and bugs to collect behind them. If you're seated at one of those tables, it's hard not to notice. I put in a DoorDash order. When I arrived at 6:30 am to get my order, there was one employee there, Kathy. Kathy said she couldn't make the food because the manager had overslept and they couldn't open the store until the manager got there. She said she didn't know how to process a refund or cancel my order. I told her to tell her manager when she arrived that she needed to cancel my order. She asked me for my name in an angry and defensive tone and I gave it to her but she didn't write it down or remember it. I called back and spoke to another employee who refused to give her name, let me speak to the manager, or give the managers name. I told her to tell the manager to cancel the order (Kathy did not pass along the message). This manager instead processed the order so that I was charged over 60 dollars for invisible food. I contacted corporate who I hope know the name of the manager of the store who overslept and then punished the customer by making her pay for food she didn't receive. read more

I usually never stop at a Denny's, but when I saw this one done in classic American '50's diner-style I had to go in, and I'm glad I did. Done with lipstick red, aqua blues and polished chrome/aluminum with black and white checkerboard flooring, it's as true in design as could be. I really felt I had stepped back in time into the diners of my youth. And better yet, my server lived up to it with total charm, bottomless coffee, and friendliness; the way things used to be. For food, I had their steak as eggs sunny side up. I'm not sure about the cut of meat but it was surprisingly good and done just as I had ordered. I can't rave about the food other than to say it was certainly OK, and as Denny's has been in business for 65+ years, they must be doing something right. It wasnt like terribly gross or anything, but nothing was clean. Everything was noticeably dirty to some extent. Not that the restaurant could help it, but all of the customers were trashy. Meeting some friends in Columbia while on a roadtrip from South Florida, my kids and I decided on Denny's on Harbison Boulevard. Service for six - we were quickly seated. Loretta was our server. After joking about the Grand Slam Breakfast special on the menu, Loretta quickly offered some cost savings options that provided coffee or other beverages. Life made easy, 4 Grand Slam Slugger breakfasts were ordered, along with a kids Junior French Toast and one breakfast with eggs and country fried steak. Water for all. Loretta made sure everyone had what they needed and breakfast was served before we knew it. No complaints from my kids - no complaint from myself or my friends. In fact, we ordered too much food. Restaurant was tastefully decorated in a holiday 50's style theme. Music played in the background. Overall a decent experience that was made a bit better by Loretta, our server. Visiting from California, my husband, son and I stopped in for some breakfast Thanksgiving morning and were pleasantly greeted by the staff. Our server was exceptionally sweet and I would give an A++:) for service! She was simply the sweetest and very genuine in her kind words. We were between working and got hungry pretty late at night around 10:30pm last week and decided to try the local dennys out. We were seated by who we thought was the waitress for the night but apparently she wasn't feeling good or something. Anyways this really nice man who turned out to also be the cook came and waited on us. We got our drinks fast then ordered and waited for probably only 10 mins and our food was coming out. I requested my steak rare since I was worried it would get over cooked with me not thinking the skills wouldn't be good of the cook. To my surprise it came out perfectly rare which is my favorite but I'll eat med-rare if it's cooked that way. It was lacking in spice to me but it did have salt and pepper on it. With some A1 sauce it was perfect along with my mashed potatoes and gravy. They are lumpy but soft and the gravy tasted almost like kfc. The broccoli left more to be desired since it was just plain broccoli with no spices and soft but not mushy. By fiancé ordered the sampler. The buffalo wings were really good with just enough sauce and heat. The onion rings were super crispy on the outside and almost melt in your mouth inside which I found perfect. The chips and cheese dip were ok. The shake was really sweet but my fiancé loved it. We came back this week and we were waited on my a different waitress who was really nice and new. It was super late around 1am so it was basically just us in there besides a couple about to leave. There were some down sides, they were out of a few items but over all it was really good. I ordered the boneless wings but was given chicken fingers cut up, it's pretty much the same except missing some extra crunchy coating where it's been cut. Joe ordered the spaghetti which turned out they were out of meatballs so he changed it to the pot roast. The pot roast turned out to be really delicious and tender except for the celery they were still crunchy. The waitress was new and did mess up a couple things but it didn't make the food any worse and I got to try the white gravy which was also very good. Stop by Denny's and got the Supreme Sizzlin' Skillet. I thought I may have read the menu wrong because there was absolutely no meat in this dish at all. I got home and looked it up this is what it said. "Grilled sausage, fresh spinach, fire-roasted bell peppers & onions, mushrooms, grape tomatoes and seasoned red-skinned potatoes. Topped with Cheddar cheese and two sunny side up eggs*." What mine had was No sausage, no roasted peppers, lots of onions. 2 small left of spinach, and lots and lots of red skinned potatoes, two eggs on top. So apparently I didn't read the menu wrong. The good: masks and distances are enforced. The bad: absolutely unsanitary. The floors were slick with ooze. Bathrooms were also deplorable, which is usually an indicator of the cleanliness of the kitchen. Gordon Ramsey would flip his shiz. The meh: food was mediocre as well as service. Staff were nice though. The weird: the tables are still squished together anyone without a perfect physique will be squished. The forks are also almost perfectly flat as well, which makes it oddly challenging to get food in your mouth. I just ate pancakes with a spoon instead. Weird but worked better than the fork. Overall: my family has been going here since it was a place called Mel's diner. It has been going downhill ever since. This last time might be our last. Today I came with my family for dine in during this corona virus situation and it was very clean and spaciously distanced. I wanted to get all you can eat pancakes, but they are temporarily off their limited menu. Luckily my waitress suggested I get a super slam and substitute all items for pancakes which gave me 8 to start off. After I enjoyed my delicious buttermilk pancakes she told me I could add additional stacks for only 99 cents. I ended up eating 14 pancakes for right at 11$. My experience at Denny's number 7753 was the worst experience I've had in a restaurant in a decade. The restaurant was filthy, the food, including the appetizer, took nearly an hour to reach the table, and we were only informed of the missing items that would not be on our order as it was coming to the table. The waitress clearly has no concept of how to serve, and the food we received was mediocre at best. We had to ask for the rest of your order after the majority of it reached the table, and the chicken Alfredo was clearly just hunks of chicken with queso poured on top. In addition, we had chosen to go on a kids eat free night. Rather than the kids eating free, we were charged the full amount and given cash back instead. The cashback did not cover the sales tax I was charged, and I had to explain to the people behind the counter what portions should have been taken off, as there had been items missing from our order. Frankly, we would've chosen a different place to eat on being charged the full amount alone, as I wasn't prepared for that charge on my account. Advertising a promotion of free or discounted meals and instead providing cashback is dishonest and misleading. However, with that said, had we known the state of the restaurant or the state of the food, it wouldn't have been worth any deal to eat there. Zero stars. Don't waste or time or money. read more
