Another unexpected gem of a place. I say this, and I am also fully aware that staff and cocktails can change at anytime. However, the staff here (currently) and the cocktails coming out of here were quite phenomenal. Alyssa and Chad had some of the most hospitable and approaching personalities as anyone would hope for a craft bar or in hospitality in general. The cocktails had delicious ingredients not usually seen or made in all bars and were delicious and well balanced. Also try the homemade pistachio orgeat it is marvelous. read more

After the Bluejackets game we decided to stop by Denmark to grab a cocktail and check the place out. Other reviewers have described it better, but the ambiance of Denmark certainly feels like that of an upscale, metropolitan cocktail bar. The staff is friendly, but although there is a view of North High Street and the convention center, don't expect to come to Denmark and do much in the way of people watching. With its position on the second floor, you can't really look straight down, so you're looking across to the convention center which doesn't have a lot of foot traffic. Compared with, say, Union, there's not as much of a view. Also, it can be difficult to find a seat next to the window, so be prepared for that. Overall I found the quality of the cocktails to be superb - far better than most establishments in Columbus, so I'm giving it a 4 based on that. Also, if you're friends want cocktails but you're more of a beer/wine person, they have a reasonably priced and decent selection of beers to choose from. I would still like to try the food, and some of the other cocktails - so I plan on going back. read more

This is a hidden gem! When we went for happy hour it was so nice and not overly crowded. The owner is so nice and knows what he is talking about! While we were there he gave us free samples of a new drink he was trying out. I was here with a group of 3 and we all tried different drinks! I got the Moscow Mule and French. My sister tried the Fall & Oats, Tijuana Strawberry, and Strawberry Daiquiri. My sister wanted the daiquiri and the owner personally made it strawberry on her request! He was so adaptable. Upstairs bar away from the hustle and bustle of the street. We tried the distinguished gentleman, and the spirited away. Spirited Away was a nice and light drink, which we did not expect. Distinguished Gentleman was sweeter and heavier, not our favorite. It was good, just not my taste nor my boyfriend's. Can never go wrong with an old fashioned here. I like this place. A lot. A mix between a bar and a lounge. The drink menu is unique; you can tell they take their time in both crafting the recipes and in making them. Everything I tried was really good. The environment is fairly laid back, though it can get loud depending on the time you go. The menu can be somewhat intimidating to people who don't drink cocktails often, since some of the drink descriptions have uncommon ingredients, but the bartenders are all friendly, willing to explain the menu, and make good recommendations. read more

Denmark is an interesting place. I went at a weird time, so I'm not sure I got the whole vibe down pat. But at 4:30 on a Saturday, you can walk right up and take your pick of any seat in the house! They've got the bar, a little lounge area and high top tables. I was a little intimidated by the menu as I'm not a big cocktail drinker, but it was really fun to try some of their house concoctions! Our waitress was helpful and offered suggestions based on what I like to drink and I needed up loving my cocktail! It had fresh pineapple, brandy...and about five other things that I had never heard of, but it was delicious! I also tried the chorizo pablano flat bread, and it was good to soak up some of that potent potion, but nothing to write home about. They also offer happy hour prices ($2 off) on the weekend! My brother suggested this downtown gem. If you are tired of the same over the shelf drink selections all to common, this is the place for you! Cocktails you have been looking for! The staff are gentle and kind, soft red hues and whites let you feel finely dined while treating you like family out for a night. They make everything we ordered in house. After a martini our curious nature demanded we try the uhh, what was it called? (Won't ruin the experience). I do suggest you try it it was unique and fun to have our taste buds spun around. I tried three drinks myself and did not feel three sheets to the wind or the aftertaste of cheap vodka. It was nice to relax at my intended level of zen. Pricing for the experience is moderate (I've paid more at ball games) and you'll enjoy the drink garnishes as a nice added touch. For me, places that serve really interesting and innovative cocktails fall into one of two categories. The first is the ones who make them and know it and might just be a little too smug about it. The others are places who make these drinks more for the love of the drink. Thankfully, Denmark is in the latter group, and what they do, they do really well. Their space is open and can handle a reasonably large number of folks. I appreciate how the servers set up individual tabs for each person immediately (that's definitely a more common thing in the midwest than the northeast). And then there's those drinks, organized by traditional/innovative and by liquor type. Pay close attention to the ones where some of the ingredients are in red ink. Those are ingredients - typically syrups, liqueurs, etc., made in-house, and really distinctive. That was an immediate lure for me for my Black & Blue Manhattan, featuring their homemade blueberry shrub syrup and garnished with fresh blueberries. Other drinks my party ordered were equally satisfying. This is, for me, just one more gem in Short North, I place I just can't visit often enough. read more

My favorite cocktail bar in Columbus! The attention to detail from each of the mixologists to every drink is really special, the noise level is low, and the view (when there isn't construction) is great. My personal favorite is the Pear-a-dise cocktail. The honey, vanilla, ginger, and pear flavors blend so well together. Drinks are premium, and can be pricey, but there is a slight price cut for happy hour, and the experience is worth it. More 3.5 stars but closer to 3. A few of my friends went to Denmark and I met up with them there around 10pm. Denmark's entrance is an unassuming door near North Market and is located upstairs. The place itself is super classy and upscale yet the cozy chairs and modern wall decor kept the place from being too presumptuous. The view looks like it has potential but unfortunately these days it's not so eye pleasing to see Short North's current construction. It was very crowded, I think there was a birthday party going on, so my friends and I shared a table with some of us standing, no big deal. The waitress seemed nice but she was very slow so it took about a 30-45 minutes to get a cocktail. We tried going directly to the bar as well, same deal but just a little shorter. The cocktail menu is pretty extensive and everyone was able to find something that sounded good. The prices of these drinks ranged around $9-13 and for how much I was paying I honestly don't think it was worth it. The drinks were thoughtfully crafted and visually appealing. Makes sense that it takes longer to get your drink but that 30-45 minutes is still a pain. Also, I feel like I should have some buzz going on after a couple drinks especially since I came from another bar and already had a couple drinks in me. However I didn't and I felt cheated by the price of these drinks. I didn't order any food since but my friends did before and arrived and they said the portions were too small for what they paid for. Lastly, I saw other reviews saying that the music wasn't blaring. I had a different experience where the music was a little too loud and we found each other almost shouting to hear each other. Faced with so many blasé choices around Arena District before we hit up a concert, a friend and I decided to take a chance on Denmark. We parked in the Vine Street garage, which is a perfect in between from Denmark to the Arena, and Parking was really not atrocious by any means. Denmark's doorway is snug in between Bareburger and the old Yankee trader & Barley's Brewing. If you open the door and see Denmark in bright red on a wall, you've picked the right door. Head up the stairs for deliciousness. We got right in before the evening workers crowd and young professionals hit the place. I can't say this place is my type of crowd by any means... I was probably two notches under-dressed, and there was a guy in running clothes next to me. Everyone just felt very "posh & Business" here, but the odd part is nobody made the experience uncomfortable. The bartenders were on it, but I could tell they were getting frazzled with orders pouring in. They were all super nice and accommodating and checked in occasionally. I wish I had more time to ask them some questions on a couple of drinks.... Perhaps another visit. I decided on a classic of 'Old Cuban', which was refreshing and tasty. Made me wish I was in Cuba on the Malecon checking out a sunset, or something. Their seasonal drinks change (duh), but the Summer menu we reviewed looked amazing. If I had more time we likely would have indulged a bit more. Food is Spartan, but available. It's simple flat breads and just small plates like most finer bars and establishments provide. It worked though, and the food was simple and tasty enough with the drinks. The décor here is very calm, open, and comfortable. The music was right up my alley and fit the metro scene of Columbus. Prices are mid-upper end for cocktails. $9+ regular per drink You're paying for craft here. Everything is done beautifully, and with a perfection with serious mixologists behind the bars. Surprisingly enough the regular patrons knew the bartenders by name and vice versa, so it felt personal. If you're visiting Columbus, this would definitely be an A-OK destination for cocktails to wrap up, or start and evening. I liked it! read more

After the hype created in my mind by the reviews, I found this place way overrated. First of all, it was way too loud for a cocktail bar!it felt like I was at a pub. We went on a Friday night and ordered 5 cocktails. Unfortunately, there was only one server that night and we had a tough time ordering our drinks. We had a dark and stormy with activated charcoal, something sizzle, a cocktail with cotton candy and a sazerac. All of the cocktails I tried, although were unique, were not palate enriching! We wandered into Denmark one night during a business trip to Columbus. The softly lit room, large windows, and plush seating told us we'd found a gem. The drinks were delicious and our waitress was incredibly attentive- but we'll get back to her in a minute. We got a wide array of cocktails, a few flat breads from the kitchen, and water. Our drinks were constantly being attended to and we stay right until (maybe past?) closing time. It was a great way to end the night. Now back to the server. I believe her name was Misa and she was phenomenal. She recommended drinks based on our likes, she checked on us frequently, and she talked a bit about the establishment. They pick their liquors and stock their bar in alignment with their morals. I think it's amazing that the company is politically and socially aware. Additionally, toward the end of the night after I'd had a healthy about of alcohol, Misa recommended a drink that sounded right up my alley and all the men in my party encouraged me to order it and told Misa that I'd have one of those. She politely told my colleagues that she'd let me decide if I wanted another drink and she waited patiently without pushing me while I made up my mind. Seriously- awesome experience. Four of us came here after the CBJ game on 12/23. Just couldn't handle the crowds and horrible service next to the arena so we walked a bit and decided to try this place. It was nice. Great lighting and music. Easily found a seat and got our drink menus. Took a while for the server to come back to take our orders and to get our drinks. That's my only complaint. In regards to the cocktails, they are fantastic. I've had every gin and whiskey drink on the menu and enjoyed everyone. This is a great spot for a date night, drink with friends, or nightcap. The downside is that at night it can become very crowded and loud, which means the staff is often slow to get orders. During my last visit, orders were taking at least 20 minutes. So in the interest of time, I tried to order two drinks at once (neat whiskey won't get watered down!). I was told by the waitress that I was not allowed "to double fist" and when asked why was told that "that's a very common policy at all bars". News to me! Total fan of Denmark here! I love a good craft cocktail, and Denmark is just the place! That's saying a lot, because I have to travel past Curio and Sidebar to get here from my house (lots of love to both of those places too!). Every time I've come to Denmark it's been to meet up one-on-one with a friend (or my husband) on a weeknight. The atmosphere is equal parts dreamy wind-down and hip coolness. The cocktail selections are extensive -- and not at the expense of quality, either. The bartenders are very knowledgeable and approachable. I've had them adjust cocktails to my personal preferences (go easy on the simple), and they even let me borrow a power cord to charge my phone once. There's something for everyone, and just reading the menu is a good education. You won't feel like this place is too cool for you. It's just cool. Besides the cocktails, bartenders, easy going pace, and decor -- Denmark is super fun because it's on the second floor of the building. Go up the stairs, and then gaze out of huge floor-to-ceiling windows over High Street as you sip. You'll feel above-it-all, but not in a snooty way... above your cares and stresses. It's a fantastic retreat. If you're looking for snacks -- Denmark has them, but you're better off just having a cocktail or two here and grabbing nomz elsewhere. It's the newest cocktail in Columbus; and that comes with a lot of pressure. I am a huge advocate and fan of Curio and MOUTON, so my expectation was instantly that this place will compete with those locations. I came in for a happy hour: a great cocktail for under $10 sounded way too good to be true. I wasn't disappointed. I ordered two old fashions and my friend picked up a Jack Rose (apple brandy),. Both were great drinks, made with precision and ease. My biggest qualm with this place is the space. The decor was a bit confusing. It was high-scale and clean, but it didn't seem to match the hardwood floors that came with the building it almost felt as though I was in an IKEA showroom built into an early 1900's warehouse. The windows allow tons of light, which aligned to the bright red color of the walls and the branding, making this a much different experience than Curio and MOUTON. It doesn't seem like a great environment for a speakeasy-styled cocktail, but it will make for an excellent spot to hang out with co workers or friend after a busy workday. And again: that happy hour is excellent. Ambiance doesn't affect the tastes, but the experience is certainly key. I think in time, this place is going to evolve and it's going to build a regular audience that will keep them around for some time. It's walking distance to the convention center and the short north, and the food all looked pretty marvelous. They had a separate room for events and meetings that I am certain will take off in time; perhaps an alternative space for those conventions or leadership meetings; if the cards fall in the right place, the next candidate for president could be determined within those four walls. The second time back, I had a significantly different experience than the first. The drinks are still excellent, although a bit pricy (bottled beer in particular). Service was quite good. Jerky small plate was great, too, and a perfect pairing for some whisky drinks. The first time I stopped in I loved the concept, it reminds me of the bar side of Sidebar. The space is nice, and I can appreciate the lower volume and lack of TVs. We ordered two cocktails off the menu, and were more than pleased with what was delivered. The bill however, was another problem. I ordered a Rob Roy, off the menu, and the bartender replied with: "let's see what we have for scotch" and proceeded to read off 3 or 4 labels. I pointed to the menu again, and answered with 'whatever's usual'. When we got our tab for two drinks, it was $8 higher than expected. Two $9 drinks, and an $8 up-charge for the scotch the bartender selected. On the second visit, no issue like this happened, so it was could have been a one time thing during opening. read more

I first discovered this bar via Columbus' first "Urban Living Tour." Denmark was listed as a destination along the self-guided tour and my friend and I were more than excited to try this place for the first time (not realizing it had already been open for 4 months). Once we arrived we were upset we hadn't heard about it sooner! I was instantly pleased by the contemporary decor - i.e. lovely wooden floors, unique light fixtures, high bar tables and stools, etc. Great ambient / trip-hop music flowed from the speakers making for a relaxing atmosphere. Being in this establishment made me forget I was in Columbus, Ohio - I felt as if I were traveling around and stopped into a random bar in a big city such as Chicago or New York; I don't know about you guys but, I love that feeling. The bartender's name was James and he was enthusiastic and welcoming when we to him it was our first time stopping in. I decided not to be habitual that day and ordered "Pimm's Cup" and my friend, a Bellini. We watched as James made both drinks artfully with precision and ease. The drinks were fantastic and it was also happy hour meaning the cocktails off the "classic cocktail" menu were only $6! - Quite the deal. They also do $4 wine pours and $3 pints if craft beer during happy hour which is 4:00-7:00 Monday-Saturday. The owner, Garry, was also at the bar and engaged in pleasant conversation with us and was incredibly attentive. I truly cannot say enough good things about Denmark. My experience with this place started while I was attending a convention downtown. A group of friends of mine decided to come down and meet me for dinner at a place near by there that to our dismay was way too crowded. Noticing a sign that said 'Denmark' we grew curious and ascended the stairs to investigate. What we found was a modern and clearly Danish inspired interior (the name might be a tip off there). Their cocktail selection is phenomenal with a lot of rather interesting choices. A favorite of mine is their take on the Old Fashioned which involves taking the classic recipe and adding elements of apricot to it. I approved of the addition of this artistic flair to the classic. My other experiences have come and gone as I quite simply became rather enamored with Denmark. I try to stop in there when ever I find myself in a debaucherous mood around that part of town. Perhaps the most notable one of late though would be the political fundraiser I hosted there this past election cycle (I was managing a General Assembly campaign). The owner and manager were incredibly helpful to us as we set up the event and I found that the secret cellar space was well suited for that sort of thing. Denmark is definitely a great place for a party or gathering. If you haven't been by here you are simply being negligent to your cocktail and food loving side. read more

When that one friend comes in town from a big city and states "Columbus is behind, there is nothing trendy to do", take them to Denmark, it's sure to impress! The bar is extremely posh, with hard wood floors, amazing lighting, unique lounge type seating as well as high bar table tops and has an amazing view of high street and the convention center. The vibe is eclectic, mature and hip. The menu consists of a limited food menu and an extensive signature cocktail list. I will note, cocktails are expensive $9-11/each but they make them with a lot of alcohol I tried two items on the menu and they were in a word, fire! Fancy and Fun Happy Hour Spot! I mean...if you're feeling fancy for a spell, then why bother just going for Happy Hour?!? I will say that you can keep it casual here too. This place has much of a fancier vibe for your low-key person. I would almost say that I feel an atmosphere similar to Sidebar, but with a less fancy attitude (no knock to either business because I love them both!). The second floor view and feel adds that little extra to this bar as well. I can definitely see this place feeling overwhelmingly packed due to its layout and seating, but I'd still venture for a visit over a number of other places. Prices are what you'd expect. Nothing that different during Happy Hour and (for being there only once), nothing particularly stood out on the menu. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed the flatbread. It was quite the bueno substance to level out the "Old Fashioned" mood I was in. Lovely 2nd floor bar hidden in a mixed-use commercial building. Great service, nice interior, clean space overall. The drinks were good, just not as balanced as I might have expected. Good presentation. Nice selection. I would definitely come back again. I'd suggest a branding overhaul as well as a redesign of the drink menu both in terms of style and taste.
