We used them twice, a rear end collision on my wife's Subaru and a deer strike to the front of a…read moreToyota. Both times they were quick with the fix, the Subaru turned out better. I had to go back for a second bumper clip for the Toyota and it still was aligned slightly off. For the most part it's good enough, as it's been over a year without issues. They do a great job matching paint, I can't tell a difference between the front and back bumpers. As for parts, they go cheap when quality after market ones are unavailable, due to our insurance companies contract. More recently I needed a new front grill, which I purchased an OEM independently. They looked at the front of the car and said it needed a bumper, grill and a few other parts and paint for slightly over $1,000. Also, I would need to sign a waiver to skip calibrating collision sensor. I ended up taking it to a mechanic, and they replaced the grill for $70. Because no one disassembled the entire front, they nor I could prove the status of the inside arms of the bumper. Even if they are damaged, it's still holding, which is good enough. The plastic on the bumper was flimsy to begin with and the position looks the same as the photos taken when they finished the original repair. For now, I consider it completed and my cruise control has stopped flaking out at high speed. In this case I received a quote from the methodology that makes them respected for handling repairs, but it was not what I wanted to do.

I know nothing about cars & seldom need to use a mechanic / repair shop, so I was looking for a…read moreplace close to Bed Stuy to take my 2007 Lexus that wasn't starting. Plenty of places in Brooklyn have lots of bad reviews, so I went with Malibu due to their lack of abundantly bad reviews. Diagnosed as a rat-chewed wiring harness. Estimated at $390 to fix, which is exactly what I paid. Bit skeptical around how much work/time was actually involved (e.g., I'm a dude who knows nothing about cars & it could have just been a loose ECM wiring plug or a single chewed wire), but at the end of the day, my car is now running perfectly & I didn't have to spend $1k+, so I don't really care how much time actually went into it. Full wiring harness replacements can be thousands of dollars. Also got a tire patched and swapped out for $20, which is cheaper than what a tire repair shop would have charged. Great communication & updates... called in the AM for drop off via tow truck & they promptly kept me updated on progress throughout the day and notified me immediately when my car was ready. Also worth noting (which is pretty reasonable) -- they charge a daily car storage fee once work is done after 24 hours. My dream of not having to deal with street sweeping for a week was unfortunately shattered pretty quickly because they were so quick. Another reason I went with Malibu is because they have a spacious workspace that can hold a lot of cars -- lots of other repair shops have 1-2 lifts in what's effectively a residential sized two car garage. Malibu has a massively sized car warehouse that can hold multiple cars being worked on, and has space for other cars around still. Entire staff is eastern euro (not sure the specific flavor), but they were friendly. I picked my car up right at closing, and got blasted with cig smoke in the garage, which felt appropriate for a car shop closing up for the day. 5/5, would come back!

Avoid - Payless Auto Repair Center (Staten Island) My…read more70-year-old mother brought her car here for what appeared to be a simple muffler bracket issue that was causing noise. The shop told her the entire muffler system had to be replaced and instructed her to pay cash, charging her $580. After the "repair," the car was worse than before. Strong exhaust fumes were entering the cabin, making her light-headed, and the check engine light came on, which had never happened prior to their work. When I returned with her to address the issue, the mechanic never used any diagnostic equipment but immediately blamed an O2 sensor. He also told my mother he did not charge sales tax, yet the paperwork clearly shows tax was included. This experience was deceptive, fraudulent, and like a complete rip-off, especially toward an elderly customer. Instead of fixing the problem, the shop charged a large amount of cash and left the vehicle in a dangerous condition which it did not arrive in.
