When I say there was no one here I literally mean NO ONE. The place REALLY needs an update but the food was good. For a small town Cafe it was really good. If I had a family I could see us going here every Sunday after church. I got a Reuben because I'm on the prowl for the best Reuben around that's not my own and so far this has been the best. This cafe caters to locals and those who are passing through like we were. It's conveniently located and easy to find, plus there is plenty of street parking. They were down a few employees when we visited (the sign in the door said that they were looking for a chef), which is probably why it took quite a while to get our food. That said, our server was polite and attentive and kept our glasses full before and during our meal. Decor isn't the focus here--aside from a few pictures and other wall decorations, it's fairly stripped-down. You can tell that this is a popular place, as many of the tables were full, and people kept coming. You get the feeling that this is something of a gathering place, which is nice. There were lots of families, couples, and groups of friends. My aunt and uncle split the club sandwich and said it was very good. I got the salad bar, which was unlike the salad bars that I've had elsewhere. While there are some of the usual salad fixings--lettuce, chopped tomatoes, olives, minced onions, and diced peppers--there were also tons of mixed salads, too. There was tasty coleslaw, zippy pickle and pasta salad, and rich potato salad. It was like being at a mini church potluck and being able to take a scoop of everyone's family recipe (perfected over decades, of course). I was delighted by how fresh everything was (I'm pretty sure that the tomatoes had come out of someone's garden, and I want to know their secret), and the pickled beets were super tasty. All in all, I'd say this is a good option for a bite if you're stopping on your way to or from the Driftless Area. Do try the salad bar; it's tasty bit of soul-hugging nostalgia. Somewhat limited options for those with dietary restrictions, so probably not a good choice if you're dealing with allergies, sensitivities, etc. read more

The food is more like home cooking or a lot of it is. The owner cooks and the wife waitresses most days all day and at night through the rush. They have a Great Fish Fry on fryday. All you can eat plus full soup and salad bar. It's always good. Can't eat anywhere near the food I eat a little lettuce and a little shrimp salad then half a cup of soup. The soup ( 2 ) choices they are homemade and super. The clam chowder, and chicken and dumpling is so good it's hard to choose which one to take. They get a SUPER A+ from me. I like going there. Only thing is I drink stronger coffee than they have. So I can't enjoy coffee there. Unless I bring my own. First impressions: very clean, quick and incredibly friendly service. Food: I ordered the BLT chicken wrap, ice tea, blueberry pie, and 2 cookies to go. The BLT wrap was tasty. The chicken bits and BLT was a good combo. My only regret was not ordering sauce on the side for dipping. That would of put the wrap over the edge! Still good choice. I would definitely order it again. The Hamburger soup was delicious. Nice flavors! Blueberry Pie: it was absolutely delicious! The crust was flaky and the blueberry's were perfect. Compliments to whom baked the pie. You can't eat pie without ice cream on the side. That is a must! Overall Experience: I would dine at Del's Cafe again. My family and I went out for brunch at Del's cafe. The food was good and the soup and salad bar was highly recommended. When I ordered a Diet Coke the waiter rudely said,"No. You'll have Pepsi" When my daughter ordered a hot chocolate she said "it's hot as hades and you want hot chocolate!" Other than that we enjoyed our brunch. It had a 1950s dinner sorta feeling and the ambiance was very cute. Pie was great! read more

This is a good example of a local diner-style cafe that is popular with the locals and worth a stop off the interstate. The food is good - I had a "Rachel" which is a Reuben with turkey - very tasty and filling. My wife had grilled chicken which she liked, although I thought it was a tad dry. Stopped here for lunch during a long road trip. Hoped to be in and out relatively quickly, but that was not the case. We were there for approximately 45 minutes. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich. The bread had a crisp on the outside while the inside was soft. It was really good! I'm unsure what type of seasoning used, but the chicken was great as well. I was pleasantly surprised. With that said, I did find a hair in the mayonnaise prior to eating the sandwich. I simply cut the area the hair was touching out of the sandwich and didn't complain. This can happen anywhere, so it is understandable, just thought it should be noted. The chips were extremely good and I would recommend trying then if you have the chance. The atmosphere is undoubtedly a local diner, but it was cozy and homey. The service was fine. read more

Stopped in with Mr. Piano while we were passing through and looking for something warm (it was winter) and basically a small bite of breakfast. We both got coffee, he got toast, and I got a side of hash browns. I'm a vegetarian with an egg allergy, so there wasn't a whole lot else on the menu I could have and they weren't sure if some of the battered stuff had egg in it as it comes to them frozen and is not made in house (and the waitress I asked did not offer to try and look it up, so I wasn't going to push). The hashed browns were decent, if a little on the bland side (good if you're watching your salt intake, but I am not), and the toast was exactly what you expect. The coffee was hot, but surprisingly weak (we both take ours black, he couldn't actually finish his even after trying to add cream to it to help it along). Mr. Piano thinks they didn't use enough grounds in the coffee maker, so perhaps it was just not a great coffee day when we visited. The one waitress that appeared to be there was not unfriendly, but seemed largely inclined to leave us to our light meals. I noticed that she was very warm towards presumably regular patrons whom she recognized (which is always sweet), so it may simply have been that we were outsiders. Mr. Piano described the location as "classic Minnesota diner," and as the native Minnesotan, I have to take his word for it. I thought it was cute (and the decor seemed more cafe-ish than diner to me), and it certainly appeared clean. Overall, I wasn't super impressed and there's not anything about it that would compel me to return, but it is cute and small-town-ish, and I imagine the food is more impressive if you don't have any food allergies etc., so your mileage may vary. read more

My sister and I came here on our way home from Whitewater State Park, where we had been camping over the weekend. We were both impressed with our breakfast here and the service! Even though it was very packed with cross country runners, we still got our food in 10 minutes. We stopped here for Sunday brunch. The atmosphere is exactly what you'd expect in a small town cafe. The menu however is much more than you'd expect. We ordered off the menu however if buffets are your thing I'd recommend it. It is cheap ($7.99 on Sundays) and offered a large variety of foods. The sausage skillet was excellent. Others in my group had the eggs Benedict and veggie omelet. The portions were big- none of us finished. We had good service even on a busy Sunday morning. Stumbled upon this cafe one morning while on a coast to coast road trip. Its a small cafe in an old town, where everybody knows each other by name. Its a farming community, full of friendly folks. The food was delicious, and the serving size was large. The price was below what would be fair. If I had magical powers, I would bring Del's back with me to Maui.
