I was at the Blue Heron a few weeks ago with my sister It was very busy and a man waiting near us said he comes there almost daily and it was the busiest he's ever seen. lol. Lucky us. I had lunch here with friends yesterday while visiting them in Winona. What a wonderful coffeehouse! The food was absolutely delicious, and the coffee nice and strong (I had a dark roast) Service was excellent. Lots of people there hanging out - very much a community place. The kale, quinoa, butternut squash salad I had was SO GOOD! I thought about getting some to take home. Strongly recommend this place if you visit Winona! read more

This was a magical little coffeehouse. I arrived early Friday morning and there were lots of people here, cozily sitting and enjoying food and drinks. When I went to order they didn't take apple pay, although the gal was kind as to let me run for my wallet. I ordered a vegetarian frittata with sweet potato and oyster mushrooms and a fancy cheese. A side of fruit came with it and toast. As i don't do toast she subbed extra fruit. I also got a tropical green tea. I wasn't given a number but was told shed bring it out. She recalled my order perfectly and delivered it as promised in a rather quick fashion. The frittata had a perfect texture, and paired well with the ingredients. The environment of the coffeehouse was cozy, but restaurant like. There was a board for local companies, resources or whatever else. There were cute trinkets inside spread about, and an adorable blue heron out front. Overall I would definitely return here. The gal at the front knew different customers and it had a real small town, caring feel. read more

Very nice ambiance, serviceable coffee. The food menu and drink menu was pretty robust. Clearly a student hangout. The service was so-so. Parking on the street wasn't a problem... and this place is only about 10 minutes from the hwy. It's local and I like that. read more

Blue Heron is one of my FAVORITE gems of Winona. Been coming here since I was very little and I'm nearing my 30s! Friendly service. They were kind enough to accommodate my dietary needs by substituting kale for the standard baby greens in the beet salad. It was delicious!!! Nice cafe with plenty of space to sit down, relax, talk and enjoy one of their yummy meals and / or coffee creations. The cold brew is tasty. Blue Heron is an airy, lovely cafe and coffeeshop that had been closed for a long while but recently re-opened. As always, three stars is not a bad review in my book. I got a great oat milk latte here ($4.50), but was sad that they'd sold out of their single vegan baked good (while remaining fully in-stock of everything else). The food menu has few vegan options other than a salad or two and a cup of soup. One dish that you'd think would be vegan, the Szechuan noodles, is sadly made with honey. First off, why is this dish sweetened at all? Secondly, why use honey when you could use simple sugar, agave or maple syrup and then effectively add an extra vegan option to the menu? I'd love to see more vegan options (maybe a tofu scramble or a seitan breakfast sandwich) and a couple more vegan baked goods. Regardless, Blue Heron is a cool spot and worth a stop for a cup of coffee, if nothing else. read more

Blueberry lemon scone (5/5) These were freshly made. They were incredibly moist and delicious. I really liked how fresh the blueberries tasted. Quiche (4/5) I loved how soft the egg was. I had to get off my bicycle and out of the damp and windy weather so I was thrilled to have a delicious late lunch of hot mocha, tomato and garlic soup, and turkey breast sandwich on their homemade gluten-free bread! Yum, the soup truly tomatoey and sandwich hit the spot. Now finishing up on writing my day's notes and my mocha. Nice ambience here as people read and work on projects and the other side groups of people can be more social. A friend took me here while I was visiting her in Winona. I wish I had a coffeehouse like this where I live in Kansas. The coffee and food is good but most of all, it has a great, chill atmosphere. My friend touted the scones, so I ordered their scone of the day, which was pecan with molasses frosting. As a person who has loved and made scones since her trip to England over 10 years ago, I am hard to pleased when it comes to this tasty pastry, and Blue Heron's is legit. I love the lightness of the scone but it is heavy on flavor. The pecans were perfectly toasted, and there was plenty of delicious frosting for every single bite. We also had a coconut brownie that was okay. My daughter's hot chocolate was too hot for her to drink, so I ended up drinking some of it and loved the chocolate flavor. I thought I ordered a decaf vanilla latte, but I didn't detect the vanilla. Nonetheless, it was a good espresso drink. The walls were covered with artwork from elementary and middle school students from town. Additionally, it's just a laid back place, and I love that it shares spaces with a neat book store that has a play area for kids. There is a castle in here that was the perfect size for my daughter and my friend's daughters to play "Frozen" quietly while we drank our coffee a few feet away. Winona is lucky to have a great, local coffeeshop in Blue Heron. Whether you're just stopping in town for a day, a student here for a few years, or a local, you'll find something to like about this place. read more

I played a show up in Winona, this past Friday and after the show I asked some locals where to go for Coffee the next day! And that's how I ended up at Blue Heron! It was so great I ended up here twice, once when I woke up at 7:30 am and then again at 11am when my riding home partner woke up ready to drive back to Iowa! The place is rad, half cafe/coffee shop half book store! Beautiful big windows, open seating and a really super nice staff, who remembered I came in earlier and gave me my second coffee as a re-fill! They also had vegan chocolate chip mint cookies, I'm vegan so anytime I see that in the bakery case, I got to go for it! I'm so glad I did! The cookie was magnificent! Crumbly, and soft my favorite kind, and went perfect with the fantastic dark roast they were brewing! If I lived in Winona this would be my hang! read more

Wonderful place for breakfast! I had the chai oatmeal and it was wonderful. Steel-cut oats cooked to just the right amount of chewiness, steeped in chai. Nirvana! The decor in the front section was cute (although the main dining room was pretty sparsely decorated). I liked that they locally source their ingredients. This is one of the nicest coffee shops I have ever been to. I was there for breakfast and they use fresh vegetables and fruits. The quiche and frittata were very delicious. It also looks like a great place to work on a lap top or just read a book. There is a book store connected to it, so maybe buy a book there and read it while you eat. I loved this place. If I was from Winona, I would be there a lot. The prices are a little expensive, but you really pay for great quality. read more

Great coffee and the best bakers in Winona. Seriously the only place where I have ENJOYED scones...wow. The soup and sandwiches are a little pricey but consistently excellent and they use local and seasonal food as much as possible. Definitely a progressive vibe but not in an exclusionary sense...people who love this food show up. Lots of seating too, you can linger over your coffee easily without guilt. read more

Three of us had lunch today. You order at counter and food is delivered to you at your table. Young girl taking order must be new because she asked for us to clarify our order several times. I asked for an itemized receipt and she had to check with someone else. Food ingredients sourced locally. We had soup, Mediterranean sandwich, greens and pear salad, and chicken salad sandwiches. Awesome half-bookstore / half-cafe environment. I've only enjoyed dessert and coffee here as part of an evening poetry reading event that I attended recently, but I would definitely come back were I to be in the area again. So delicious! In town for a few days of vacation and decided to try Blue Heron for their vegetarian and vegan menu. Food was very tasty and I loved the fact they list where they get all their produce and meat from local farmers. The only thing I was disappointed about was the ratio between price vs portion. Luckily, Yelp pointed us in the direction of this Starbucks, which is located INSIDE TARGET. Service was a wee bit slow, but she also kinda got slammed at once with like 4 people. Someone eventually came to help (not sure where he came from, he just magically appeared) and we got our stuff. But overall I'd say it took about ten minutes from the time we got in line to the time we received our coffees. But - the service was friendly and the coffee was hot..... So we left happy.

I imagine this is a secondary form of communicating with their South African Zulu-speaking Kudu cousins. I'm uncertain if Caribou employees are required to learn grunting or clicking as part of their barista mastery as I've only ever spoken to them in English, but my orders here have never been lost in translation. The coffee is rich and smooth, and lacks the high acidity of Starbucks (though I add in my own bitterness if my visit is before 9am #nightowlsunite). I'm sure most coffee drinkers in Winona would justifiably rate Mugby as having the best coffee in town, but Caribou is a solid backup when you get a wild hair for caffeine. Caribou sits in a very convenient location, right off the highway as you enter Winona, a great option when there's no time to migrate across town for your Mugby fix. Overall this Caribou is a wonderful place for you and your herd to fuel up when you're on the go, foraging the MN tundra for some joe. **Disclaimer, no caribou are used or harmed in the brewing of the coffee at this chain.

The coffee shop itself is nothing special but the employees are not as polite and friendly as for…read moreexample in Scooters or Starbucks. I do not know if this is the company's policy or if it is specific to this particular coffee shop. Also once I played Trivia in the Caribou app and won a 10 cent discount on a drink. I really regretted doing it because they gave me coffee of a much smaller volume. They simply did not fill it to the proper amount. I advise the company to organize training for employees on better customer interaction and respect toward them. And it is worth removing Trivia from the app if it is not being used to benefit customers.
