Had the opportunity to visit this wonderful shop last night. Lots of variety and very reasonable prices. Lots of nostalgia going on. Was fortunate to have a brief conversation with the owner. I used to love this store when I was younger. I'm not sure if Covid just hit them VERY BADLY, but the shelves are almost completely empty. The store had no employees maning the store, and you had to walk to the back by the soda fountain to pay for your items. My Aunt had found sandals that she wanted because her boots were killing her. She saw the price tag and thought SURELY it would be marked down, considering it is a 5 & 10. We go to the back of the store to pay and we are told to wait a few minutes while the guy is serving people's food. He finally comes to the register and tells us that the sandals are $20..... We both say "$20? For these??" And he said "Yes, that's what they're marked." I understand that's what the price tag said, I just thought since it was a 5 & 10 that they would have been marked down from original price. We paid and left immediately. read more

Based on a mint chip milkshake and the friendly service I give them five stars. You can't make a better ice cream shake. This place is a variety store like the old 5 & 10 cent stores. In the they have a soda fountain also serving food. read more

Della's is a real 5 & 10 like I remember from back when I was a kid. Anyone who remembers 5 & 10's will have an immediate fondness for this place. They have a food counter/soda fountain in the back of the store. The shopping part of the store is a little thin and it's mostly trinkets and tourist junk, but it's SO COOL and fitting that Cape May would have a 5 & 10! read more

I'm a sucker for the '50s soda counter, I just can't help it. The rest of the store is a bit overpriced, tacky, and crowded in the summer. But sometimes the soda counter has a few spots on it (not the best place to bring a family with lots of kids- there's just counter stools, and a couch in the corner). They have a menu with breakfast ($1-5 per item), lunch/dinner ($4-9 per item)- we didn't order food, but it seems like the type of place where you would just order simple things and nothing too complicated. The main highlight seems to be the ice cream ($2-6) and the soda- ice cream soda, egg cream, root beer float, etc. We ordered a medium iced tea ($2.25), some water, and a scoop of peanut butter ripple ($2.99). The ice cream was tasty, and perfect on a summer evening. The server was nice but didn't seem to speak much English, but we tipped her a few bucks and she seemed so excited and kept thanking us. I guess people don't tip well here- so make sure to give your server a dollar or two! I wouldn't come into this place expecting to find great unique purchases in the store or a fabulous meal in the back. I'd take it for what it is- a retro fast food counter- and adjust your expectations accordingly. read more

Cute little shop that makes you feel like you're stepping back into the past! Della's has a nice selection of souvenir items and little necessities. The real treat at Dellas is the actual soda fountain in the back of the store. Me and my family sat down for shakes and malts and loved them! The lady behind the counter was friendly and whipped up our shakes in no time. With oldies on the radio and hand dipped shakes we loved every second of this little gem! It is right in the middle of Washington Street Mall and is easy to park and get to. read more

We had extended our Cape May Christmas weekend by a day. We had to wait for our room so we wandered over to the Washington Street Mall. We love the Della' s 5 & 10, but never sat at the lunch counter so we walked in. You think because of the new at retro signage and decor that it's going to be fun. It was The worst food experience Ever!! We were seated at the counter for well over 10 minutes when a very grumpy, miserable man growled. "What da ya Want"!? My partner said" I d like a hot chocolate please". The server turned around and in a very disgruntled voice said something like " oh great a hot chocolate " I got off my stool and said to my friend, come on there are better, nicer places to be served in Cape May. My partner did wait, and pay for a hot chocolate to go, but I would never give that business any money ever again. If you are That unhappy, don't work at a lunch counter in Cape May. Most of the businesses on the Washington Street Mall are so nice and very accommodating. Don't go to Della's lunch counter. Go to Stewart's across the street. You're better off. read more

Seeing as I'm a sports fanatic and Della's had ESPN on during breakfast, I instantly fell in love with the place. Although the actual 5 & 10 is nothing to right home about, the diner/ soda fountain tucked away in the back is really neat. The coffee was good and cheap, leading me to recommend it over Wawa if you're staying in Cape May. I would also give the breakfast wraps a try. I really appreciated the toasted wrap, which crisped it nicely and made it feel more like a breakfast go-to. My boyfriend suggests the bacon egg and cheese. There were a few pricing oddities however, e.g. $5 for a couple of Eggo waffles... that one had us scratching our heads. Another odd tidbit I would like to share to see if anyone ever thinks the same thing: One of the front entrance doors is on a slant, "That's architecturally incorrect." Does anyone ever think of that Kramer line from Seinfeld when they open that door?! read more

While this retro 5&10 with a soda counter is adorable to look at, pass on the food at the counter. We were charged $18 for a black cow, an undercooked grilled cheese (how do you screw up grilled cheese?) a microwaved cheese burger (gross!) and two measly servings of potato chips. There were maybe 10 chips per plate. (check out the picture I uploaded) The counter people were not particularly friendly, not nasty either. Service I guess was just so-so. What a weird soda fountain. The clerk was a "quiet talker" (older guy) mumbled through the order. Not a smile for anyone in our party. Wanted ice creams and sodas. Couldn't understand a word he said. Gave me an exasperated sigh when I asked him to speak up as I'm hard-of-hearing; then didn't get any louder. Rather than taking all three of our orders--he took each of our orders individually, and went back to the kitchen (I guess) to make them one at a time. My wife and I had our orders when my son asked for a brownie sundae. He wandered back to the kitchen, then came back to inform him there were no more brownies, resulting in tears on a hot, tired afternoon for what was supposed to be a restful treat. My wife and I had already been served, so it was too late to leave our orders. Wouldn't return. There's a good Stewarts across the street where the waiters were friendly. read more

I don't usually do this, but.... So I forgot my anniversary card so I waited for Dellas to open. The morning man opened up promptly at. 8:00 am. I greeted him with a cheerful "Good morning!" I got no response. Thinking that he didn't hear me I repeated it. Still no response. So I picked out a card and a ballon that needed to be filled. At that time it was just the two of us in the store. He pretty much told me that he wasn't filling it up. He has to be the most "miserablest" person I've met in Cape May. However, my wife and I stopped in last night. The guy from Michigan was awesome! Get rid of the grumpy morning guy and hire more like the guy who loves the cold and snow!!! I wonder if the "miserable" guy stopped to think that 14 years ago people started this day not knowing if their loved ones died or survived in the 9-1-1 attacks. read more

In need of food around the 2 o'clock hour, in the seaside resort burg of Cape May, NJ, I stopped into this VERY quaint in design and appointed 40s-50s style 5 & 10 with a real, old-fashioned soda fountain at the back. All very "BACK TO THE FUTURE." Stopping just short of the counter to peer at the menu, looking in vain for any available vegan option for my life affirming but culinarily annoying diet choices, I finally settle on a good old PB & J. What could go wrong? And I see that they have the typical varieties of White, wheat, rye, Kaiser roll, etc. along with regular short order accoutrements behind the counter like blenders large toasters, drink fountains, coffee makers and the rest. I leg over a stool and sit myself down in front of a rather dour looking young man in period style paper hat, white shirt and apron who tilts his head my direction and says, "Can I get you something sir?" "Yes, thank you," I say, "May I please have a peanut butter and jelly on wheat toast?" Now, I try to not read into the "way" anyone looks at me, but there are those moments when you get a look and this was one of those moments the youth of today call SHADE. After opening a few cabinets and drawers he pauses to ask, "You want it on white bread?" "No," I reply, "Wheat toast if I may please. Oh and a cup of black coffee please." Another look. Not quite as much shade followed by more drawer opening. Thinking to myself, "I guess it doesn't have to be wheat." I say, "What's our obstacle?" "No nothing I can do it for you." he says, "And you want to cuppa coffee?" I tell him, "Yes, black please." as he moves down to the far end of the counter to the coffee makers. At that far end of the counter he turns, raises his voice and says, "YOU WANT SMALL, MEDIUM, LARGE SIR?" "SMALL." I say to everyone in the building. He returns with my coffee, sets it in front of me, Opens another drawer or two, finds what he needs and begins working on my sandwich. I see that the bulk tub of peanut butter he has placed on the back counter has the word KIDS in big pink letters on the label. I think, "Well, that's going to be loaded with lard." not wanting to make the day any worse for this young man who has greeted every other guests that approaches the counter in this time with an extremely fatigued, "I'll be with you in a minute." I keep my peace, sip my coffee and wait for my sandwich. He stops to wait on a few more customers at the counter, walks by me and sighs, "Do you want your sandwich cut in half?" "Oh yes, please, that would be nice thank you." I say trying to be as cheery as possible hoping to affect his mood. Over his shoulder he asks, "for here or to go?" "Oh, to go please thank you." with even more cheer hoping to reach his cold heart through his spine. He pops my sandwich into a plastic to go container, places it in front of me and walks away. Certain that he will return with some sort of written record of our exchange, I wait as he waits on a few of the customers that have built up over this time period. As he passes by my end of the counter again I say to him, "Sorry, do I pay you the check or go to register?" "I'll be with you in a minute sir." oh, OK I think to myself. Surly but OK. After a couple of more minutes from the same position he had taken my coffee order I hear "THAT WILL BE $7.35 SIR." this time I mouth the words THANK YOU in that special, over exaggerated way that we all do. As he wonders by again I hand them a $10 bill saying that I only need one dollar in change. He returns with the entire change amount whereupon I leave behind the coin and a dollar making it a slightly more than 20% tip. When I settle myself at my destination, I begin eating my sandwich and notice that the crust of the wheat bread is stale. Something that would not have been an issue had it been toasted as I had asked... But it wasn't. Also the sandwich contained what I felt was a rather stingy amount of both peanut butter and jelly. So, lesson learned. I just wish it had not been an almost $10 lesson for peanut butter and jelly. read more

Person out the counter seemed miserable.... not pleasant or welcoming at all. It was confusing to see what was on sale and what wasn't bc it appeared everything labeled was on sale. Well we musta bought the single item that wasn't. Deck of cards $5.... total rip off. Was with the items listed 50% off. I did find some things semi reasonably priced. But again at least pretend to be pleasant when you have customers. A smile goes a long way. Second store in this strip where I had this experience. So far my impression of Cape May is very unwelcoming and rude. Maybe it's because its the off season, but still. Def not a 5 and 10 store... much is overpriced. read more

Cool store, super cheap stuff, cheaper food, reminds you of a walk down memory lane. The place is a little vintage and seems worn out but it's cool to walk around just for the randomness, you might find something you like! I have never written a review of a restaurant ever but this was the worst service I have ever had at a restaurant so I had to sign up for yelp to write it. We sat there for almost 40 minutes waiting for our grilled cheese sandwiches. 2 of us had gotten ours and we still had 3 to go but they seemed to forget and started making other people's not even acknowledging us. They were so slow and could not care less. What a shame because this is a neat little store and that experience ruined it. I will never go back. Not a great first impression of Cape May. read more

When we walked in it took me right back to when Woolworths was in business. Old school soda fountain in a five and dime store. We sat at the counter and I ordered a chili cheese dog and a milkshake. My wife ordered a plain dog with onions on the side. The cook seemed like he was doing us a favor, not very friendly. After getting and eating our food I started looking closer at the wall over the griddles . There's wires hanging for the big screen tv, and there's greasy dust hanging from them. Right over where your food is cooked. Greasy dust also hanging from signs and on the wall. Pretty much got disgusted. Place is pretty dirty. Been to other eateries on the mall and nothing is this dirty. Even though it's really nostalgic I don't think we'll be back. read more

We stopped into Della's just to sit at the 50's style counter to have a cup of coffee and light lunch. It was a fun place, in the winter, to just take in the deco and warm up. I am sure it is mobbed in the summer. I had the home made chicken noodle soup and it did not disappoint. It had homemade wide noodles, mini veggies, and a very light broth not laden with salt. Hubby had the same and he got a small italian hero that was made with quality meats. Just a fun and inexpensive place to grab a bite. Worth the visit. read more

My boyfriend and I decided to pop in here since I wanted lunch and he wanted breakfast. There is cute little counter in the back and a few tables and boothes. He ordered sausage, egg and cheese on a biscuit. It came with chips and a pickle which i found a little odd. It was also very soggy and tasted like it was microwaved. I ordered the chicken salad club. The chicken salad seemed homemade to me but had a ton of mayo. I still found it enjoyable. I aslo had a cup of tomato soup. It was straight from a can. I didnt expect anything more out of it for 99 cents. I would get the chicken salad club again. It was huge for 6.25. I would get it to go and take it down to the beach or sit on the porch and eat it. After waiting for 30 minutes, and no bagels, we finally walked out after paying for the tea and coffee. Absolutely disgraceful service. I absolutely love this place ! Matt , who was so incredibly nice and enthusiastic , sold 3 of us the most delicious peace pies. There were a lot of cute souvenirs for purchase in the shop , but the truly friendly, passionate demeanor that Matt radiated made us all smile. total rookie error not to check Yelp in a tourist town, so I guess I got what I deserved but the nostalgic vibe of the soda fountains was FAR outweighed by the ABSURDLY small 2 scoop sundae that was legit served in a small plastic punch sized cup.
