"I ever get my hands on a dollar again I'm gonna hold onto it 'til George Washington grins It's mighty strange without a doubt Nobody wants you when you're down and out" (Derek and the Dominoes) The Washington Street Mall was dedicated in 1971, and you'll find it in the center of downtown Cape May. It's one of the area's top destinations and attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. A three-block stretch of Washington Street and adjoining sections of six streets are closed to vehicular traffic, so the area is a big pedestrian mall with over 75 businesses - boutiques, shops, restaurants, bars, snacks, are everywhere for your purchasing pleasure. Street parking and parking lots are pretty convenient all around the area, and we found a nice diagonal spot in a big parking lot behind Washington Street. We started our visit Saturday and had a nice lunch at the Ugly Mug and then enjoyed strolling around the mall on a crazily warm Spring-like afternoon. By the time we were ready to return to our hotel our shopping bags contained placemats, beef jerky, a sweatshirt, a bag of candied popcorn, and a car decal. Most definitely it's a worthwhile stop if you're in the area.

Walking along Washington Street in Cape May became my daily routine while on vacation this past July w friends. Tons of gift stores, restaurants, with lots of local charm. It's lovely day or night, a must do while in CM!

Great time at this street mall! It is a throwback to old times and it has some incredibly beautiful houses all around the area. I'm very impressed with the old architecture in this neighborhood. They have all kinds of eating options as well as great places for a cold brew or drink. A really nice place to visit.

Wonderful mall in Cape May- with a long strip of local vendors local boutiques with unique finds -nice restaurants-ice cream places with delicious flavors-they also has a beautiful church which I was drawn to for a prayer that is so desperately needed -plenty of benches to sit and relax just a must place to visit if you are in Cape May

Such a great place to stroll of boardwalks aren't your thing. There's something for everyone. Retail. Dining. And if you're lucky, there's a festival going on like Oktoberfest or a sidewalk sale. I love it here!

When one thinks of Cape May, the beach and all the Victorian architecture may first come to mind. After that, though, it would likely be the Washington Street Mall - it's a popular spot that attracts vacationers due to its size, walkability, and variety of businesses that line the streets. The Mall is more of an outdoor shopping area that spans a few blocks of Washington Street. It's closed off to cars, so pedestrians are free to roam from store to store without worry. There's a good variety of businesses that one would expect to find in a beach resort town - lots of clothing and gift shops selling touristy stuff, some ice cream parlors, coffee shops, a Christmas store (of course), a confectionary (of course again), and several restaurants. During my most recent trip to CM I visited here several times to people watch and pass the time. The biggest standout shop for me was The Cheese Shop, where I picked up some blue and crackers and was able to munch right outside. The mall itself is easily accessible from multiple points in Cape May, and you can walk Washington St beyond the mall up to the Emlen Physick Estate - another popular attraction in CM. Overall, not to be missed when visiting Cape May, even if you're not looking to make a purchase or eat, it's a great place to walk some laps.

A must see place when visiting Cape May. One of our friends suggested this and it was just colorful and very good !! Loved taking photographs here amidst the colorful backgrounds . Lots and lots of eateries around . Parking is the only headache with this mall. It is so limited and very herd to find , even though it is paid parking . No free parkings around . Took us 20-30 mins to find a parking . Apart from parking this place is just THE PLACE to be . Kids loved the pizzas .. and lots of other ice creams and coffees around . Loved this spot and a must visit !

Any time of year it's a great place to visit! Christmas was especially wonderful! Found some great deals in the shops. Was a romantic night walk with the lights. Tons of good places to eat.

My bf and I had a great time walking around Washing Street Mall. I loved the different shops and snack options. I was able to grab memorable souvenirs for family and friends. And you're supporting local small businesses while you're at it. Parking was a bit difficult as we found a spot about a 15-20 minute walk from the mall. I was glad to find a Jersey Shore long sleeve to take with me back to North Jersey!

I've been to Europe a few times and walked down Las Rambla in Barcelona where in 2017 some crazy person decided to use their car as a weapon, driving it down a pedestrian area. So I'm extremely aware of shopping areas like this and am especially in tune with my surroundings. Cape May could do better at installing vehicle barricades that would prevent such attacks. Other than that bit of depressing stuff, this is a great spot. On this warm Saturday evening, the place was pretty crowded with families and kids running about. Shopping, dining, eating, looking at locally made crafts and such. A few buskers far enough away from each other that they were each making a decent sound. A highlight for any visit to Cape May. Just be aware as always. [Review 18224 overall - round number 100 in New Jersey - 1746 of 2022.]

It's not a big outdoor mall, but it had lots of visitors, families, couples, singletons enjoying the quaint tourist shops.

PROS: many good stores are inside here. A cigar shop, A book store, jewelry store, a locally made items store, a pet shop, pop culture store and more. The staff is very nice in all of these places as well CONS: only an up escalator and not a down one. It's also only receptive to foot traffic. Nowhere to park and go inside OVERALL: if you're in the area, come here. It's amazing inside

A beautiful place to walk and shop, the mall has a lot of new stores, and different restaurants since I visited here about four years ago. The mall is a smoke free zone, and although masks are not required it was packed last night while walking around as well as the stores being very crowded so use your own discretion. The square in front of the mall has another full block of stores for your shopping pleasure, parking spots are located at the back end of the stores.

Bottom Line: Large store, wide aisles and lots of discounted stuff…read more My husband and I had about an hour to kill before boarding the ferry for Lewes so I decided to stroll around Big Lots. I think I've only been in a Big Lots one other time and it was years ago so I wasn't sure what to expect. On a Friday evening there were not too many shoppers in there which is just how I like it, especially during COVID! I enjoyed meandering the aisles looking at all sort of goodies like kitchen gadgets, Christmas decorations, cleaning supplies and snack foods. In the end I left with a Trolls coloring book, some Haribo gummy candy, a few bottles of water and some puzzles. Regarding the puzzles, my husband and I do lots of 1,000 piece puzzles and I was able to get several at Big Lots for only $6 whereas I usually pay at least $11 at Target or $20 at a specialty puzzle store. Funny enough, one of the puzzles that Big Lots had for $6 I had previously purchased at Hershey Park for $20! The cashiers were nice and check out was easy. Not a fancy store but overall a good experience!

Spent two rainy nights around Valentine's Day at the beach, so there wasn't much to do except eat…read moreor shop, but this gave me the opportunity to check out all the stores nearby and Yelp about them! This Big Lots, located in the same shoping center as Acme on Bayshore Rd, is well equipped with their standard merch, but has intelligently expanded stock on items most needed in the many rental properties nearby. It makes sense that affordable furniture/home goods offerings would be in constant demand, and Big Lots, just off island, would do really well this close to the homes on island (as well as for all the locals in North Cape May and beyond). I noticed many items on the shelves that I found in my rental, so clear evidence of how they're put to use. Likely because this store does so well, I was delighted to find more variety in every department (items that I don't see at stores nearer me), as well as more stock on everything available. I ended up with a fun dog toy for only $5, which my dog has enjoyed way beyond $5 in the few days he's had it. I also got a kid's xylophone for $3 (regular price, not sale), which is rare to find so inexpensive. The bars are metal with the rest plastic, so quality is decent enough to make some fun noise, and I don't worry about my son breaking it like his wood and metal one. For some reason there were a crazy number of pillows all over this store. I could not get away from the pillows. I guess that is another item in high demand at the beach? If you need pillows, Big Lots has 'em. All in all, if you need something to equip your rental, or if you're vacationing and require any home goods, toys for the kids, dog stuff, or junk food groceries, this is a great place to stop! I didn't see staff on the floor, and checkout was friendly but a little apathetic. So this is why I took a star off. But in terms of store cleanliness, merch presentation, ease of navigating store, and stock availability, they deserve 5 stars.
