My grandmother had purchased one of the original bungalows for $1500 in '46. Every summer except one until I was 21, I visited our family summer home. My children were 4th generation. Many of the families that returned each year were multi-generational. The special part of being a resident were the activities each day run by a hired camp counselor team. We had an orchestra from NYC play every Saturday night starting at 6 PM for the little kids, teenagers danced to records, then the band came back at 10 PM for the adults. We participated in all sports. My first kiss, first beer, first dance all happened at Cedar Grove. We lost our house in 1992 to a strong storm, and I understand the entire beach was decimated during hurricane Sandy. Of all my life long memories, Cedar Grove Beach Club is my most favorite, sacred of all others. I cherish those summers.

Empty (Almost completely) and actually clean (For NYC beach). Had a healthy walk by the water. And smelled the air before it coming into the city. Water looks brown, but do not mistake they are considered to be good for sea life, and fishermen will tell you about that. I know there are nicer beaches, Jersey Coast and such, but this one is local.

I take the extra time to drive to this location even though it's not the most convenient. The cleanliness and the atmosphere make it worth it. The women's locker room is always tidy, the indoor pool is clear and doesn't smell like mold, the outdoor pool is like a spa. I love the layout of the fitness floor and how open it is. Yes it gets crowded but you should expect that at any gym during certain times. What really gets 5 starts though is the kids academy. The whole staff there is really awesome. They take care of kids like their own. I feel safe and confident leaving my little ones there while I exercise.

Unfortunately, my experience with the pickleball program has been extremely disappointing. While the facility itself is beautiful, the culture on the pickleball courts is the opposite of what I expected from a premium club. The staff came across as gatekeepers rather than customer service professionals. Instead of making members feel welcome, I often felt as though they were deciding whether I was "allowed" to play. As a paying premium member, I should not feel like participation is a privilege granted by staff. The skill assessment process is another major concern. Members are required to pay for an assessment to access different levels of play, yet there is little transparency about how ratings are determined. In my experience, the results did not reflect actual on-court performance, and there was no meaningful explanation of the evaluation criteria. A player can compete successfully against intermediate-level players and still be placed in the beginner category without a clear explanation. A transparent, objective rating system would be much fairer. Reservations can also be canceled without meaningful notice or explanation, making it difficult for members to plan their schedules. After speaking with other members, I found that several expressed similar frustrations about the management of the pickleball program. People join Life Time because it is a premium club, and the membership fees reflect that. Members deserve professionalism, respect, transparency, and consistent customer service. The facilities are outstanding, but the management and customer experience of the Bridgewater pickleball program fell far short of the standards I expected.

There are a few picnic tables and grills on the lawn. No pool lounge chairs or towel service so bring your own chairs, picnic blankets, food/snacks and other accoutrements to enjoy a leisurely summer day. Facilities are clean and well-maintained. Very kids/toddler-friendly. The sizeable shallow end has several sprinklers/splash fountains for children to play in, and there are slides on both the kiddie and adult sides. Also a playground in the back (not affiliated with the pool). There are always many life guards on duty every time I've gone. The pool is accessible only to Clarkstown residents and their guests, so if you're not a resident befriend someone who is. You must obtain a Clarkstown resident ID card first at the registration office at 31 Zukor Road in New City. (The pool won't simply accept a driver's license.) Rates can be either daily or seasonal for individuals or family, and are very reasonable compared to similar community pools.

It's no exaggeration that these monsters from the deep probably kept a legion of child psychiatrists in full time employment. On a recent visit it was nice to see that the previous snake-ridden den of iniquity has long been been replaced with a legitimate pool and that the mythological beasts of years past have been slayed by chlorine and actual cement walls. You can even see right to the bottom. What a concept. This is what Nanuet Lake should have been like all along... no thanks whatsoever to my parents who thought this was some tough love version of Shangri La, albeit minus the all consuming bliss one often finds in paradise. I kid about my parents (almost) and am happy to bestow five easy stars for a childhood reclaimed. I still hate snakes.
