I have been going to Deerfields Bakery for decades; I just realized that it is not "Deerfield" or "Deerfield's", but "Deerfields". Before we fell in love with the mousse cakes of another bakery that's just minutes from home, we used to order most of our birthday cakes from Deerfields, and picked up at the location in Deerfield. In addition to cakes, they specialize in a full line of baked goods, including pastries, cookies, cupcakes, pies, danishes, donuts, muffins, bagels, and more. Recently, I needed to order a small 4" cake for the first time ever, since all of us didn't want a large cake, even a 6" cake would be too much, because I am usually the one to finish all the cake leftovers. Also, there were only about 3 days for the bakery to make the cake, our other bakery needs 7 days, and probably would not make a 4" cake. I knew that Deerfields could do it in 48 hours. I was pleased that I could order on their website, although their choices for 4" cakes were very limited. I picked a velvet cake with cream cheese filling and buttercream frosting ($30.95). However, it has 4 layers and serves 6-8, we would still have leftovers. This time, I chose to pick up at the Deerfields in Buffalo Grove, where I had visited a couple of times, and I like this location much better than the one in Deerfield. It is like a storybook bakery to me! The bakery is picture perfect inside and out, visually appealing with lots of vibrant colors and beautiful displays. When I visited, the spacious bakery was festively decorated, which was quite charming. There's also a café inside, with some tables on the first floor, and the entire cozy second floor dedicated to café dining. The café serves breakfast and lunch Wednesday through Sunday. Like many other bakeries, Deerfields is closed on Mondays. On this weekday when I came around noon, the bakery was bustling. I would give this experience 5 stars for both the cake we ordered and the excellent service we received, especially from Greg, who greeted me as soon as I walked in. The customer service team had emailed me suggestions for decorating the small cake, and I replied with my specific requirements. However, it seemed that my reply had not been read. I needed the center of the top filled with more roses so the design would not look like a wreath. In the future, I will follow up with a phone call to confirm the details. One staff member from the bake room (Brianca?) came out and explained that it could be done, but I would need to wait an hour because all the bakers had just gone on break. I agreed and said I would return to pick it up. Just as I was about to leave, Greg came out from the bake room with the good news that a baker was available to do it right away. In the end, I only spent about 10 to 15 minutes waiting, which I used to take photos around the shop. The cake turned out beautiful and delicious, moist and velvety. I myself didn't care that much for the thick buttercream frosting, but the cream cheese filling was quite good. Since we had the cake after a big dinner, we all opted for small pieces. However, all of us didn't mind eating leftover cakes the next day. When we crave for a more traditional cake in the future, we will definitely return to Deerfields again! read more

A spacious bakery with tons of pastry options. One counter is for coffee orders and one is for food. If you order the mug of coffee for under $2, there are free refills which is nice. But both the light roast and dark roast were surprisingly weak. The mocha also wasn't as rich and chocolately as it should be. But the chilaquiles was really good. read more

We used to love Deerfields, and used to get all our cakes here. The variety of treats available was wonderful, and everything tasted so good. We drove about 25 minutes to get there. But our last experience in 2024 became our last. We ordered our usual Angel Food cake, which had been divine. It had been so moist and had wonderful flavor. It surpassed by far any Angel Food we had ever tasted and was in a class by itself. But no longer! It was coarse, dry, and tasteless. The variety of treats was far less than usual. Honestly to start, the GPS says this is a 1-$ Bakery.. That's a joke because everything here is very expensive. 1 basic donut is $1.99, a stuff donut is $2.99, any "BITE-SIZED" pastry is $2.15 for only 1. Any other pastry starts at $4.25. Any coffee cake is $20.00, along with pies that are $20.00 or more, and for just a 6" cake, you'll pay $39.95. ALL BEFORE TAX! The ONLY reasonable priced thing in this bakery is their coffee which is surprisingly cheaper than Starbucks but all way too sweet unless you're getting a regular black coffee or latte. They literally drown any flavored drink with these artificial syrups making them undrinkable. So if you're looking for an actual 1-$ bakery, this isn't it. Pass that if you're looking for just donuts and coffee that is at a 1-$ price, you should try Spunky Dunkers. They are open 24 hours a day, and a local favorite amongst law enforcement. The service is always friendly and on top of their stuff. If you want to hear the statistics, for six deluxe filled donuts of any kind there, you will be charged at the most reasonable price around for the freshest donuts. Yet at Deerfield Bakery, six donuts is almost always $20.00 or more, and if you get a dozen donuts from here, you cannot mix and match them with other pastries either. There's so much potential this place has to offer, but you can tell they do not care to put that much effort in. To top all this off, there is literally flies everywhere, on and around the food, which ruins the experience. Next time you come in, take a look at the bread when they move it off the shelf. It's my family's tradition to get all our birthday cakes at Deerfield Bakery. They always have amazing desserts/breads ANDDD I just discovered they have the most marvelous outdoor seating. There is a koi pond with fish and a gentle waterfall. There is a cafe that offers breakfast foods and coffee inside as well. The food is absolutely amazing & service is wonderful. Deerfields Bakery is my go to place for bakery items and sweets. I'm very sorry that I didn't know about this bakery earlier or I would have been going there for a much longer time. Anytime that I need a cake, donut, pie, etc. for a special occasion, Deerfields Bakery is my first choice. Occasionally, I won't know what I'm looking for but know that I want something sweet and I'll go there to indulge my sweet tooth. Their café serves breakfast food in the morning. From their egg creations to their pancakes you will not be disappointed. They also serve Intelligentsia coffee and hot chocolate. I'm not much of a coffee drinker (my husband tells me its good) but their hot chocolate was delicious. It was very rich and creamy. It's a tradition in my family to have donuts on Christmas morning after opening gifts. On this trip we were looking for donuts for Christmas morning. We found many donuts and other pastries available. We got a few fry cakes, donuts, and creamy things (I can't tell you their names but they looked yummy). I also got a hot chocolate. They still tasted fresh the next morning when we had them. Their pastries were yummy and tasted like a high quality treat. It was pretty busy for noon on a Friday, but it was December 23. My family goes to this bakery often. We make it our little Father's Day tradition to ride bikes there and love eating breakfast outside. We usually have a great experience so it's disappointing to write a negative review. For custom cakes we usually order from Sweet Ts because I've had easy experiences and know it'll be stunning. They are currently closed and so I needed a 1st birthday cake for my daughter's birthday party from somewhere else. Night and day difference ordering a cake from Deerfield's compared to Sweet Ts. I'm super bummed because I love Deerfields for everything else.. food/getting donuts and cookies with my kids. My son loves coming here. But the assistant store manager was horribly rude. So bad that at one point, for the first time in my life, I asked if there was someone kinder who could help me with the cake order to which she replied no. I asked if a different/less busy day would be better.. no. Back and forth and back and forth to chat with a decorator in the back about really minute and simple things. I understand that a bakery is a busy place and there are a lot of customers to take care of.. but it is not appropriate the way I was spoken to. I was shocked because I thought she had to be kidding when she barked at me "just tell me exactly what you want on the cake!" I never responded back with any of the same rudeness. But wow.. I should note.. she said they do custom cakes but only if you have an exact/identical picture... ask for something slightly different or custom and nope.. "they only do cakes if you have the picture..or customers won't be happy" what? Isn't that the point.. I've seen the beautiful custom work they do and I can't help but feel like someone was just having a bad day. I just wanted a drip cake with a decorative fondant character on top... We'll see what this ends up looking like.. I basically just ended up not ordering what I really wanted. Would love to chat with the owner or manager because my experience was so off the wall. What's not to like about this place? The baked goods are yummy, made with love, look awesome and are really delicious. They have a counter where you can order breakfast sandwiches, eggs, omelets, skillets, etc. and are also very good. They have fresh baked doughnuts and pastries everyday. I haven't tried their gelato, but based on all their other food, I would only surmise that it is good as well. Do you need cakes for holidays, birthdays, anniversaries or other lifecycle events? Deerfields is always the place to go. They do a phenomenal job and everything tastes awesome. You know what's not good? Their ability to ring you up. It doesn't matter who is behind the register as they are insanely slow. If there is a line of 4 or more people, open the second register and put someone else in charge of coffee related drinks. It's not rocket science. Somehow other coffee places can ring you up and make the coffee drinks with some speed, but not Deerfields. I was there on Sunday and ordered eggs with toast and bacon for dine in. I then got in line and was third in line and thought that I would be handed my eggs while standing in line. It's not hard. Type in the order, take payment. Every other facet of of this business is done well with the exception of taking payment. So. Slow. I'd give this place 5 stars, but this isn't a new issue. We were loyal Deerfield's customers for years. I used to love coming here and I was in town for my mom's birthday and thought it would be great to order her birthday party cake from here. Bad decision. The quality and service has gone downhill. I ordered a simple sheet cake for a birthday party and had a nightmare of a time trying to order with Linda. I had a simple photo that I wanted printed on the cake. After multiple phone calls and emails with Linda she still didn't understand what I wanted and it was clear she wasn't reading my emails. When I finally got ahold of her to place the order, she sent the receipt and the inscription for the cake and name was incorrect. Everything about this process should have been quick and easy but was a complete headache. Would not recommend them. read more

I've never stepped foot in here as it's a bit out of the way, but it's well known to me because quite a few Yelp pals have been here over the years. I liked everything I saw though admittedly the wife only picked up a loaf of their plain challah bread on this inaugural visit. Their two story business is quite large with cozy dining areas on both the first floor and second floor (no retail upstairs, just dining). Their product displays are neat, colorful, and enticing. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. They offer pretty good sized breakfast and lunch menus. Quite enticing also is that they sell Intelligentsia coffee and at $3.30 for 20 oz, that's a good deal for top quality coffee. Gelato is 50% off every Friday. Bread and coffee cakes are 25% off every Tuesday. 10% off on your next visit after doing a Yelp review, presumably a good one lol. This morning I went to Deerfields Bakery in Buffalo Grove to pick up a special order apricot coffee cake for a relative coming into town for a funeral and I wasn't happy with the way it looked...the braiding was raised and didn't have much apricot filling. I was given a hard time by the employees and worse one of the owners, Ford, lied to my face. After fighting with me, he said that I could keep the coffeecake and call customer service on Monday for a full refund. I called for a refund as soon as I got to my car. Eric said he didn't say that. I went back inside and asked to talk to Ford and Eric from customer service wouldn't get him for me. I ended up calling Deerfield's in Deerfield and fortunately, they had a good one that I should've gotten. Two were made at the Buffalo Grove location and they tried to sell me the bad one so they could sell the better looking one at the other location. I had asked for some compensation for the error and they wouldn't accommodate me. I've called the village of BG about it, next the Better Business Bureau. read more

Deerfields is a local institution that sells a great variety of pastries. At this location, they also serve breakfast and lunch. They are known of their custom cakes. They have quite a unique variety to choose from when it comes to cakes and cookies. I have been here in the past to get cakes but that was a while back. So I don't remember much from those visits. In my recent visit, I bought bagels, an almond croissant and doughnuts. I came here mainly for doughnuts but also ended up getting a couple of bagels and one almond croissant. The pastries I got were delicious. I liked all of what I had. The almond croissant, the buttermilk old fashioned and fresh strawberry bismarck doughnuts were my favorites. I received good service. I am always impressed by the variety they have to offer. The quality is top notch. Because of the top quality of food and unique & imaginative pastry variety, expect to pay a premium price on certain items. Do not trust this bakery with an important cake... we ordered a week in advance... and got the wrong cake the day of the party! We picked up the order and when we got back and took it out of the bag, the cake was wrong! We were supposed to get the strawberry cake but got chocolate! Mistakes happen... but when we called them, the lady on the phone was so rude and made us send proof that we got the wrong cake because "this is too obvious of a mistake". Meanwhile the clock is ticking and now the cake won't be on time for the event! I would get over the mistake but not the rudeness and making it seem like we did something wrong! We will choose a different, more reliable and friendlier bakery for our next occasion!
