There should be a Deep Eddy in every community. No one should have to drive here, they could just walk, every night you'd walk in Cheers style and get greeted with a chorus of hellos, and you could drink all night, for cheap. Full of true Austinite old-timers, no windows, wood-paneling and beer signs everywhere, and finally a kick as music selection on the jukebox. This is the only real dive bar I've ever found in Austin that would meet the definition of dive bar as we use it in New Orleans. A defiantly old-school outpost of dive-ness perched on the hill above Deep Eddy Pool, across Mopac from the rapid mutations of development downtown, Deep Eddy Cabaret is where you go when you don't want to deal with the changes that are sweeping over Austin. The first barrier they place to the outside world is that they don't take cards. I read complaints sometimes from people upset that this or that new trailer doesn't take cards. Well, Deep Eddy Cabaret was not taking cards before they were born! There's an ATM inside if you didn't think ahead. The second barrier is the large amount of regulars, which makes it hard to break in. The old dude I was playing pool against the other night was born in the 30s, and he basically owned that table. The staff will chat up the patrons like they were old friends, because often enough, they are. The third barrier is the interior. It might not actually be that small, but it feels small, and something about the layout always gives off a cramped, crowded vibe. Every square inch of the walls is coated in UT memorabilia, which doesn't entice outsiders. There's a patio outside, but it's not very spacious either. But if you can get past those, it's great. Absurdly cheap beer ($9 pitchers), multiple pool tables, rad jukebox, a few TVs for sports or what have you, and you have what the 1950s considered a perfect bar. For long-term Austinites, that kind of continuing dedication is still good enough. read more

For me Deep Eddy has been a decades old respite from the crowd. It get's discovered from time to time by folks, but then it is forgotten. For this I am happy. While sitting with the wifey on an early Saturday afternoon, we both just sat quietly looking around. I was checking out the newspapers from 1995 taped to the walls from our National Championship year for the Longhorns and reminiscing the bar and how much fun it must of been to be there for that. The little tiny TV on the fridge seems to be gone now, but they still have a plasma in the corner.... looks a little out of place and as usual the Longhorn basketball game was on. The bartender recognized me and flashed a little smile and asked how we were doing. Someone walked in and realized it's cash only and left. Suzie went over to the Jukebox and fired up some of our favorites and this Jukebox has many of those. The pool tables were being played and the regulars were all laughing and cutting loose. You almost always forget they have a little patio area for smokers around the corner and one video game which will send you back years. I really love Deep Eddy or the tornado bar as we call it. Time has passed it by and that is fine by me. Unfortunately, there are rumors that these days may be coming to an end soon, I hope that is exactly what these are... rumors. Shhh! Don't tell anyone! (This is the best dive bar in Austin!) First off, if you like pretentious downtown crowds, overpriced drinks, and paying to park, this is not your place. If you're looking for a truly authentic Austin place, this is it. No yuppies here (ok, maybe a couple), just a good neighborhood bar where the Shiner and Lonestar flows cheap. It's not a really big place and on Friday nights it tends to get really packed. However, if you come before 10, you can usually get a table somewhere. The people who come here are a mixture of transplants and West-Austin locals. Overall, the vibe is really good: laidback, unpretentious, easy-going. Don't feel like you need to dress up: Just make sure you're wearing clothes. The juke box, as many have mentioned, is excellent. Pool tables are also present and quite competitive on a Friday night. Magnolia Cafe is right across the street, which makes up for the fact that they don't serve any food (other than peanuts and pretzels). Parking can be found in the Deep Eddy Pool parking lot to the rear of the bar. One thing to note: As far as I know, they are CASH ONLY, so be prepared. read more

What can I say?! A true Austin institution! This isn't your mom's bar...or is it? One of the last "great dive bars" of Austin that will never change. No, you won't come here for ambience, hipsters or top shelf liquor. You come here for a strong contender of the best dive bar in Austin. The jukebox has the best tunes and the location makes this place somewhat "off the beaten path." I'm sure in the summer though, this place is packed with folks that just got done at Deep Eddy pool or Barton Springs pool. I don't come here often, but I love coming here. I love Deep Eddy. I always have, since my friends and I started going here in college. When I proclaim my love for this seedy-ish dive bar, it's always hard for me to explain exactly why I love it so. It's dark, which is important. Bars should either have large, sunny drinking patios (with misters, please, for the heat in the dead of summer) ...or be so dark inside that you can't really tell if it's night or day outside. Deep Eddy has a jukebox too- which I like, because I like to pick my own country and western music. It is cash-only, which I often seem to forget. But I appreciate how cheap and frosty the beers are. More good things- the bartender is always nice, you can always find an interesting conversation with the folks on the back patio, and you will probably get hit on by the older men playing pool on the way to the bathroom. What's not to love about a place with "cabaret" in its name? I think it's a nice Vegas-y touch. Also I like that they feature the elusive mini pitchers, which are a handy compromise if you're with someone and vacillating between ordering two beers and ordering a full-size pitcher. And they have Ms. Pac-Man, to boot. It's not smoky inside any longer; smokers are relegated to the outside area now, so that should make the nonsmokers happy. I had such a fun night here a while back. It is the epitome of hole-in-the-wall but what a wonderful departure from the usual. A large group of us sat at a large table, borrowed a deck of cards from the bartender, and played drinking games like we were at a college house party. Loved it! I've bumped this place up to 3 stars since the owner seems to really care, and it has a good location. And if you like dive bars, and this place is 100% Divey (maybe more so than any other place I've been in Austin), then you will really love this place. In the dive bar category, it gets 4 stars. It comes complete with all the usual dive bar favorites that regulars celebrate: stale beer/mold smell, smell of smoke from the days of yore (or maybe after hours smoking?), dark murdery interior, and of course the dilapidated men's bathroom complete with a dignified trough to urinate shoulder to shoulder with a drunken stranger while onlookers from outside the bathroom can choose to watch, and walls that have been half eaten by perhaps mold or urine over the last half century. Don't expect much on interior design... some neon lights, an old pool table, some old furniture. When you enter the very small establishment from the outside, once your eyes have adjusted to the dark dimly lit bar, you will be greeted by what I assume are the regulars... mostly made up of a motley group of older gentlemen in their 50s and 60s at the bar, mostly drinking heartily by themselves... but I'm sure they occasionally will take the time to hit on a inebriated young lady or coed, maybe get into the fun spirited altercation. Personally I've never understood the appeal of dive bars... I've gone to many, and many of the patrons seems to like them just for the novelty. This place is 100% a dive bar... and if it works for their business model and clientele, and they deem renovations and minor improvements unnecessary, then more power to them. read more

This is one of my favorite Austin dive bars to date! Neon lights, ancient furniture, old-timey decor. Couldn't ask for much more. After trying 2 other places that ended up being closed on a Sunday night, we finally stumbled upon deep Eddy - they were open! Took a seat at the bar and the bar tender got to us fairly quickly. I hate the bathroom (two door-less stalls, one main door, very dirty). I hate the atmosphere . I love the beer prices. Also, this older man who was kinda caught up in the swirl of elite Yelpers didn't get pissed at me when I grabbed his personal pitcher, he just kinda grabbed it out of my hand and told me it wasn't for me. Later, he offered me some. But we were on our way out. The regulars made me pretty uncomfortable, so I doubt I'd be back again unless it was with a big group. Don't wear a short skirt here unless you're looking to get stared at. read more

This place is the perfect dive bar. $6.40 pitchers of Natty Light and Lonestar - seriously I thought I was in heaven. By the time we made it here, our last stop on our bike margarita tour, I had lost quite a bit of blood due to an incident in Zilker Park involving my left pinky toe, some gravel, and my flip flop. Nevertheless, I trudged on with 3/4 of a toe. When we pulled up to Deep Eddy Cabaret bloodied, sweaty, but not broken. The place looked like a shining beacon on a hill. We trudged in and I promptly broke the backpack we had been carrying our stuff in all day while trying to find my shirt (oops). Just in case you are wondering, this is a "no shirt, no service" type of establishment. We saddled up at the bar and ordered up a cold brewski. I popped a couple bucks into the jukebox and we started up a game of cards with a couple of the regulars. After I polished off the first round, I ordered a pitcher of Natty ($6.40, I couldn't help myself!). I only had about one last beer before the ladyfriend had to pull the plug as she wasn't sure she would be able to make it home on bike, ha. Unfortunately, she was right. About halfway to home she took a pretty nasty tumble. Thankfully, I don't think she felt the true impact at that point. Looks to be a great bar - I'll definitely be back for a pitcher or two. read more

Someone bought a round for the house and there were 40 people here. It's that type of place. Very low key unwinding type of place. The Pool Burger joint that is part of the building (I thought it was part of Deep Eddy) serves GREAT FOOD!!!!! I almost hate posting this review because more people may come and make it crowded. I love dive bars so this might be slightly tilted. We went on a Fri night maybe 9-10ish and it wasn't packed. Sometimes it worries me. Did the cops just raided the place? Is this the night where the bike gangs come to beat people up? Neither. It's just an o' neighborhood bar with jukebox and cheap beer. THIS is my kind of place. We stopped in for a beer on a super cold Saturday - and stayed for a few 1/2 pitchers!! This place is old school, it's an old place! Dark on the inside with Christmas type lights making it feel festive. A bar full of regular fellows catching up and solving the problems of the world. A super sweet lady bartender taking good care of everyone. A friendly pooch wandering through, accepting a scratching or two then moving on to the next scratcher. They have Lone Star on tap, my favorite and it's just not as common up here in D/FW as it is down Austin way - man, are they lucky. Beer was super cold. Great variety on the jukebox. What a great place to spend a Saturday early afternoon. Later in the afternoon some of the younger fellas came in and it was time for us to move on down the road. This will be a definite stop on our next trip back to Austin! read more

I have maybe a little bit divergent take on the Deep Eddy from some other folks: oh sure, they're right about the pinball machine, smoky/hazy regulars and beer-first approach to business that's been the bread and butter of this place lo these many moons. But I'm weird, so I kinda like the fact that you can grab some cold ones and they'll charge you something in the neighborhood of $1.60. It's like Deep Eddy didn't get the memo when all the bars got together and agreed on drink prices. So what you end up with is this great little dive with a penchant for making you save your rolls of dimes for more than the newspaper machine. But hey, look at it this way: thanks to Deep Eddy, you'll still have some left over to drunk-dial your friends...the old-fashioned way. read more

Like to smoke while you drink? Well I think you've found your bar. I personally quit smoking, so drinking at Deep Eddy is like holding my arm in a blast furnace, but that's my problem. I would consider Deep Eddy a Regal Dive Bar of the highest order. Beer is cold and cheep, the staff is great, and the jukebox is one of my favorite in town. This is a classic Dive bar that has real Austin vibe. The beers are mostly from Texas and the prices are cheap (by Austin standards). The space is small so it can get crowded on weekends. Deep Eddy is one of my favorite dive bars anywhere. The jukebox is always playing good tunes and it does not cost too much to play DJ all night long. There are pool tables and Golden Tee, but the real reason to come here is to pull a few tables together for all of your friends and drink keg beer for cheap! Who cares if the beer is not that great, you are with your friends and you will not go broke. Staff is awesome and atmosphere is so friendly that you might make a few friends at adjacent tables. What an amazing little hole in the wall! A friend and I were on a Friday night "photo expedition" and went by here for their "Beer" neon sign. Part of our journey was to stop in places along the predetermined route and drink a round prior to moving on to the next place. Definitely had more than "a" round here. Couldn't beat the roughly $2 buck beer. Nor could you beat the inquisitive company of the bar patrons, even if we were in a conversation about two separate topics never finding the common ground. I plan on coming back to this fine establishment for some more beer, tunes, and possibly some pool. read more
