It's always a good evening when you combine good food and OLD friends from high school. It's been decades since we first met and our friendships were renewed over some delicious Persian food at Deedar in Thornhill. With just over twenty of us, we kept it simple by ordering large banquet platters that included the following: Barg Kabob Torsh Kabob Shishliks (Frilled Lamb Chops) Chicken Breast Koobideh Kabob Tahdig Basmati Rice Assorted Vegetables I hope I got the dish names correct. The restaurant's bold sign lights up their name in a plaza I sometimes pass by, and it always catches my attention. I was running some errands at Staples in the same plaza and decided to pick up takeout here. We ordered online through their site in advance, and it came to $75 (including tax) for takeout for two (Platter two), which is kinda steep. However, we were surprised at the amount of food, two huge trays! One tray was filled with meat, the other with rice, and there were some sort of pickled elements on the side. It easily could have fed four people, even though it was labeled for two! They included some butter and small pouches, though we weren't sure what the butter was for since they didn't give us any bread, so we mixed it into the rice. I'm not sure if the staff knew I was picking it up for myself or thought I was a delivery driver but I think it would've been nice if she added a personal touch, ask whether it's our first time (it is) and tells us how to best enjoy the condiments and also warn us about the spicy peppers. At first, we didn't use the pouches because we thought they were tea bags, but it turned out, after finishing our first meal (we ate this over a few days), that it was sumac spice. We definitely should have used it earlier to add more depth and flavour. The reason for the three-star review is that the roasted pepper was so spicy. We thought it was a sweet pepper at first, but it's NOT! It turned out to be incredibly hot. They gave us so much of it, almost like it was a vegetable side, but it was pure heat with little flavour, which really caught us off guard. The website's ordering system didn't have much description of the dish beyond a picture, so the spicy peppers really threw off our palate. We ended up breaking out some yogurt from the fridge to cool down. So definitely order yogurt to enjoy with your dish! If you're not too familiar with their food, it's probably best to try it for the first time by dining in. The restaurant interior emits a purple glow with wine bottles lining the walls. A wonderful and most exquisite experience! Based on a (local) friend's recommendation, my wife and I came to Deedar for dinner on Monday night. We were warmly greeted by a staff lady named Molouk, who attentively looked after us throughout our stay at the restaurant. The ambiance was very pleasant, modern decoration tastefully pulled together. The food was delicious! The portions were generous. The quality of ingredients was first class! And the presentation outstanding! By the way, did I tell you the food was delicious...? We had appetizers (Kashk-e Bademjan and Zeytoon-Parvardeh), house salad, Chelo Kabob Koobideh and Chelo Kabob Shahani. We will certainly come back with more friends. Came here due to high review. Close proximity (10min drive) is an added bonus. Place was nice. Suitable to book a party with dance floor. It also has nice 'darkish' ambience (just like a party room). Food was GREAT! 3 of us share platter#3 (meant for 4-5ppl). Barg, torsh, chicken breast, koobidah along with basmati rice. The top of the rice is crusted with saffron seasoning? It give nice crispy texture overall. Big portion! (I think it can serve 6ppl instead). Meat is Flavorful. Nothing dry or tough/hard. Cooked perfect. Only torsh is not matching our pallate (3 of us agree). It has pomegranate sauce which is quite sour. The food is okay, but I've had better Persian food before. Service not good at all. They didn't clean our table for a long time and we had to clean it up ourselves for desert. What's with Persian restaurants and loud music?!! When we tried this place, the restaurant was empty and the music was blaring!! As their sole customers, we kindly asked them to bring down the volume as we could not have a conversation. They said they will and they turned it down just a notch! Not even noticeable! So we left! Amazing Persian food; We tried it when our regular Persian restaurant was full and we will certainly be back. We ordered Persian tea, it was amazing - in a ceramic kettle with loose leaves and actual bergamot flowers and it came with sugar crystals on a stick For appetisers we ordered Mirza Ghassemi and it was the most flavourful we had yet. For the main dish we had platter 1 with chicken breast kebab and tosh kebab. Both were very flavourful. You can tell right away that the restaurant is using the best ingredients possible. Each of piece of veal and chicken was succulent and not at all fatty. Great service, and a very modern / up-scale interior. Tried this restaurant for the first time with family. The restaurant was clean, beautiful decor and lively atmosphere. As a Persian, I am very particular and picky about good Persian food at restaurants and this restaurant did not disappoint. we had the shirazi salad, koobideh (beef skewers) and barg (beef tenderloin) each served with a generous portion of basmati rice and crispy saffron rice on top with grilled tomatoes. The quality of the food was excellent. The beef was tender and super juicy, served piping hot!! I give this place 5 stars and would definitely return. Would I go back? Probably not But do I recommend the place? Maybe Yes. Why? Because of the super nice, amazing server. I would give the service 6 out of 5 (at least the gentleman who served us was very professional, polite and accommodating, probably the best service I had in the past little while) The food was also OK. We ordered persian brunch/breakfast. Kale pacheh and the breakfast tray. So why do I give it a 3 star? As crazy as it may sound, because of this funny smell that I personally can't stand. In fact the min we walked in, both of us decided to leave, but then because the server was very nice and also because we wanted to give it a try, we stayed. They serve very nice warm fresh bread. The tea in a pot was good but you need to let us sit for sometime so it's nicely brewed otherwise it's too light. It was severe with sugar cube and Christalized sugar. The breakfast tray was a generous portio n, enough for 2 people, with lots of fresh cucumber, and tomato. Some walnut, feta cheese, fig jam, butter and so weirdly; dried cranberry!! (Yeah, that was a bit off and definitely not persian, but I appreciate the thought behind it because it gave the plate a nice additional burgundy color), and a thanks giving touch The jale pacheh was also a generous portion, it had everything including the tongue, brain , and everything else. I don't know how fresh it was, as I'm not a kale pache expert, and there is no point to ask if something is fresh (at a persian restaurant) because the answer is Alwyas: yes it's like 5 min old! (And that's when possibly it's a week or more old) lol So again, the gentleman was an awesome server and we were even surprised to fork across such a great service there. And I'd recommend the place to fridnds because of the wait staff who served us... we were seriously surprised! He brought us everything we asked for right away: like extra bread, lemon, and everything else... One downside was, the bread was not enough. We needed bread for tilit, the breakfast tray and the kale pache itself, but each time we had 3 pieces of bread. Though he brought us more when we asked for. The total minus tax was $56, which is pricey for that place, but to be fair, portions were generous. I just wanted to get out because we both could not stand the smell. I think it was probably the wet cloth which they mopped the floor with, probably with no detergent and just water or maybe some other stuff.... as we walked in, we both thought that we didn't want to stay there because of the smell. It did not smell fresh, or clean at all. Didn't make us want to know what is going on in the kitchen or the basement (if they had one) And definitely not appetizing So the service is 6 star The food (considering they cost) is 3.5 And the place is zero star for me. They asked us to pay for the meal beforehand and when we asked why, they said it was like that for everyone. They served us terribly and the food we ordered to stay was given to us in to go packaging. I went here recently for the first time, the decor was really gorgeous and it had a very lively vibe to it. I had the kashke bademjan as well as the chicken and koobideh mixed grill. All of the food was fantastic and the wait staff was very accommodating. It was a Saturday night so when we came in the DJ was playing.
