When it came down to finally getting our deck done, we reviewed several contractors, but none gave us the attention to detail at a reasonable price than Decks R Us. They guaranteed for us right off the bat, that everything would be completed in one day, with 8 crew, from start to finish. My house seems to have been under construction with other renovations for months now, so hearing everything could be done in a day, has me pretty sold. However, when we got our consultation, Nick shared with us how the layout would be not only ergonomically friendly, but safe for our ever curious and crawling 11 month old. We were concerned specifically with a grated drain that is directly under our deck that infamously would get clogged with leaves and cause major rainwater back-up, and Nick created a seamless design that we could get to the drain to clean it occasionally without crawling under the deck anymore! What a relief! The overall installation is clean and meticulously done. I really hate dealing with Staten Island contractors or wannabe contractors but shit happens. I can't give specific names because idk who's who in this nightmare/ shit show but after the fence was installed and there were issues with the job, instead of fixing their mistakes, all I got was push back and bullshit. Their fuck up was apparently a non issue to them, even though it cause a rift and friction between my neighbors and I, forcing me to dish out more money to another company to fix than if they would have done their job right the first time. If you're expecting to get quality then you're better off looking else where and doing more research. This is a solid dumpster dive and regretfully a waste of money. A side from how garbage the job was, they were very rude and disrespectful throughout the process. If you want to waste money, not listening to your requests and demands, getting bullshit like they are doing you a favor by installing a basic fence and workers leaving the site for hours with you left in the dark and confused, then this is definitely the place for you. read more

We were tearing down an old deck and building another from house to above ground pool. My husband had ideas what he wanted and we called at least three different contractors. Two spoke with my husband said they will come back with estimate and we never heard from them, the third didn't even bother. The pool store recommended Decks are Us. My husband called, Nick came over, he listened to what my husband wanted to do and made suggestions that my husband agreed with. Nick promised an estimate within a day or two and delivered. We hired them and thought it would be at least a few weeks before work would begin. But the following Monday they came, tore down old deck, carted everything away and built new deck including gates, privacy fence and railings with in 4 days. What a beautiful job! I now feel like I have a resort in my backyard. We are waiting on a special order of a piece of siding that need to be placed because the deck is lower then original and a pole for old fence but Nick said he ordered it and as soon as he gets it in he and his team will be back. They are OUTSTANDING! They built a 420 square foot Azek deck for us and did a fantastic job. John Stoltzfus was easy to work with and had some creative ideas to get us what we wanted at a reasonable price. I contacted about 12 firms to explain what we wanted and get estimates. John was the ONLY one to approach the job creatively. We wanted cable railings and all the other firms would only use expensive pre-constructed stock units. John told me they could build the railings exactly the way we wanted. The install involved some demolition and some reconstruction. To make the job even more interesting, the install was during some of the longest and hardest rain storms of the year. The install crew had to lay down metal panels so they could walk without falling. The rain slowed them down, but they still finished the job on time and on budget. Each member of the crew had a specific role and they worked very well together. And when they were on the job site they worked. Hard. They were no nonsense from time they arrived in the morning until they left late in the afternoon. There was minimal cutting and fitting done on-site. They arrived everyday with the materials they needed for the day pre-cut and ready for installation. They cleaned up the site every nite. The finished product is exactly what we wanted. I had a lot I wanted to do in my yard, but knew I couldn't do it all at once. Nick was not pushy AT ALL and took the time to explain to me how we could separate it up into stages. His staff came and took down my old deck and put a new, bigger one up in just a day and a half! It was amazing the way they all worked together to get the job done. I have a deck which was constructed by Decks-R-Us approximately 10 years ago. When I hired them, I was a new home owner and had no idea how such projects were planned and assembled. The men at Decks-R-Us took full advantage of my lack of knowledge. During this last week, I have been sanding and refinishing the deck. As I began my work, I have noticed so many problems, now that I have experience with such things. To begin, many of the ballasts were cut too short leaving the screws which connected them to the railing exposed. They were slick; they put the short end up top so that you wouldn't see it unless you bend down to look. Also, many of the ballasts warped and twisted. The stairs on the deck were poorly constructed. Instead of measuring and cutting actual stringers, they simply cut two pieces of wood to function as stringers and screwed each step in from the side. What this means is that each step can only hold whatever weight the screws can take. The weight is not actually on the stringer. At the bottom of the stairs, there is a post to which the hand railing for the stairs connects. This post should have been bolted to the stringer. Instead, they used 4 deck screws to hold the post in place. At the point where the post and stringer are connected is also the first step. Over time, the wood began to rot and the screws came through the walking surface of the wooden step. This broken step is what precipitated this whole project. I intended to repair the step when I noticed all of the rot. I couldn't understand how pressure treated wood could rot in such a short period of time. In fact, it is my understanding that pressure treated wood should not rot at all. But upon examination by a professional, he informed was not surprised by what was happening as the lumber used was NOT pressure treated lumber! As I disassembled the stairs and other areas that needed attention, I noticed that some areas used nails, others used deck screws with a square head and other areas used Phillips-head drywall screws. I've arrived at this conclusion: Because I didn't know any better and trusted Decks-R-Us to do the job correctly, I was grossly taken advantage of. It's clear that they used the cheapest lumber they could find along with whatever they had laying around their shop. Examine their work CLOSELY and insist on things being done correctly if you use them. Also, have a friend that knows how decks are built to oversee their work. Don't bend over to tie your shoes with these guys around. read more

Gave me a price, and told me "he could do the job in the next few days, or next week." Since then i have been waiting 41/2 weeks. After several phone calls asking for Nick to call me back to schedule a date, I was forced to call another contractor. No one has called me back to date, despite all my efforts. What an unprofessional company. No customer service, and quoted top dollar as well. Phil came to see our deck which we thought had to be replaced. He did a thorough innspection of it and said it was in great shape and only needed a power wash and paint.
