I interviewed two contractors to renovate an aging backyard wood deck. All of the screws had rusted and were broken and many of the decking boards had split. One contractor gave me an off-the-cuff estimate in a few minutes. In contrast, Peter Ziec of Decks by Ziec told me that the deck would have to be replaced but the existing footings and beams could be reused with additional ones for stability. On the spot, Peter measured our existing deck and meticulously drew a scale drawing of the deck that Decks by Ziec would build. He gave us a price based on demolishing the existing deck, carting away the old materials, adding additional footings and beams, and installing a beautiful design based on Fiberon composite decking lumber and Trex aluminum posts and railings that we selected from samples in his truck. Peter's brother Andrew, with two assistants, did all the construction in the middle of winter. They even had to shovel snow away from the work area. Snow and cold weather did not bother them. We are so happy that after doing extensive research online and in-person meetings with various companies, we selected Decks by Ziec for our deck remodel project. Our first meeting was with Andrew and we appreciated how much time he spent talking with us about our ideas and also offering suggestions. I highly recommend decks by Ziec. I needed to replace several sets of rotted stairs to my deck. Peter arrived promptly for our appointment, provided a quote on the spot and did not try to upsell me into work I did not need. While there are always surprises when working on a 100 year old house like mine, Peter and his crew worked hard to limit any cost growth to me and we agreed on all changes before they did the work. They were able to start only a few days after we gave our deposit and once they started they worked every day until they were done even when the work took a few extra days beyond what they planned; no leaving us half-finished for days on end so they could juggle other jobs. As for their work, it was impressive. Where other deck builders quoted 4X4 posts, they used 6x6s. Where others might have used two stringers for a staircase, they added a third down the middle. When we found a tight corner which had to be redone, they accommodated. Their work is incredibly solid and neatly finished and should last for decades. read more

Very open to using the materials I was interested in and stated involved while I pursued a variance request with the town which was a lengthy process.
