Deckmaster's Not-so-fine Decks. In 2023 we spent a little over $44K in a new 518 sq.ft. deck. Following the company owner's advice, we selected a high-end composite material called MonaDeck touted as the utmost durable solution we could get (compared to a wood material) while not having to compromise on the woodgrain appearance we were after. By the following Spring in 2024, we noticed about 12 boards showing signs of obvious delamination in the form of bubbles. We also noticed that 80% of the boards were faded and whitish in appearance and the only way to see the woodgrain pattern was to wet the deck. We informed the owner Weston in June 2024 with no real response for another 5 months. It's only in December 2024 that he finally visited and saw the issue with his own eyes. His explanation was that the US distributor of this made-in-India product vanished from the surface of the earth following a rash of quality issues with the products. He offered a partial replacement only of the delaminated boards which would not have addressed the overall probability of more planks failing in the coming months. We then explained in person, and through our lawyer, that we wanted the deck planks to be entirely replaced with another composite solution of equal quality to what was sold to us at no extra cost. His only offer was to replace the deck planks but that we would have to pay for the new materials. We cannot complain about our interactions with Weston and his crew or the quality of the installation itself. The only problem is that the top-of-line extremely-durable solution he recommended to us was nothing but, and failed both structurally and aesthetically within a year of its installation. And he had the nerve of asking for more money out of our pocket to remedy the situation. I have been in the world of custom fabrication and installation my entire career and it's been quite a shock and disappointment to see a company with this reputation simply walk away from its responsibility in the failure of the primary and most visible component of the solution they sold us. Unless you like to gamble, I'd recommend you steer away from this company. Thank you for your attention. read more

Before we decided to replace our aging deck, we checked out a number of local contractors who specialized in building/replacing decks. Of all the bids we received from our short list of contractors, Deckmaster Fine Decks stood out for their attention to detail, professionalism, and willingness to answer our questions on various aspects of the project. Weston, the owner, met with us at our house multiple times to work out our preferences and understand our expectations. The project was done from start to finish in about six weeks including the permit process. The permit was approved in record time, we guess due Weston's reputation with the Permit Office and the detailed build plans he provided. The deck is beautifully done and exceeded our expectations in looks and built quality. We were at home during the entire build process, and saw in person the work done by Weston's crew of Darwin, Julio, and Cender. Their attention to detail and professionalism was impressive. Having custom houses built in the past, we have experience with construction, and the above mentioned crew is one of the best we have seen. Deckmasters removed our old deck and recreated a new 2100 sq. ft. deck. When they started the job the crew was on site every day, Monday through Friday until it was done 9 weeks later. The engineering of the structure insures this deck will last a long, long time. As Weston put it, " it will be a solid as a sidewalk" and so it is. At the end of each day they cleaned the area and organized their tools and equipment. Weston and each crew member were professional and conducted their activities with extreme attention to the smallest details. The project was completed on time and on budget. After several decades of use our old deck finally broke. We asked the Deckmaster Fine Decks and a few other contracting companies to take a look at the project and place bids for the job. Mr. Leavens was the first one who came, and it was a pretty funny experience since he became genuinely insulted by us asking about a ballpark estimate, and told us that his company's work would be "the most expensive job we would ever find in the area". We received that estimate in two weeks, just in time for another company to be finishing the project with great results and for the half the price the Deckmaster Fine Decks was going to charge us. I had Weston come out and do a quote for a deck 10' x 48' single level with a step the length of the deck. When I reviewed the quote it was $32,700 for Douglas Fir and several thousands more to do any synthetic. He called the Douglas Fir ""Elite" as if to say that they had some special one of a kind tree that they only they could get their wood from. For a simple one level deck, and definitely not that big. I told him that I did not think the quote was within the realm of reasonable and please don't contact me further. His response was, "Well you have a crappy deck now and it looks like you're in the market for another crappy deck." Not only not professional, but absolutely with the intention of ripping people off for as much as they possibly can. For those who would say you get what you pay for, I would say that there has to be a true value equal to what you are buying. Don't call them if you value your time or your money. My wife wrote a review almost three years ago, but for whatever reason, yelp decided her five-star review wasn't helpful, so it's not shown. Well, here's my review - as we are a repeat customer, and couldn't be happier. We hemmed and hawed for years about getting our back deck replaced. It was in poor but serviceable shape for a long, long time. Wife would repaint it every year. Battleship gray. Matched the house. Ick. But some of the boards were beginning to rot, which would make it unsafe sooner than later. It's a relatively small deck, and low to the ground. All I can say is 'WOW'. As part of a much larger remodel project, we failed to realize that we would need to replace our old (30+ year redwood porch/deck). Long story short, we did not budget for this. We were convinced that since this is our main entrance we needed to have an appealing look to be in alignment with the other remodeling going on. We got three quotes from different contractors and it was clear that Deckmaster was far superior in terms of expertise, craftsmanship and frankly, thoughtfulness. His team constructed our 40 x 16' deck with cable railing in only 9 days. It was fascinating to watch them work - no wasted motions or materials, and they were scrupulously neat with the work site - they left it cleaner than when they started! We just had our deck replaced after 30 some years. It was becoming unsafe. We contacted Deck Master and they were able to squeeze us in and get to our replacement right away. They removed a 1260 square foot redwood deck that had deteriorated over time. When removed they found considerable rot where the old deck was connected to the house. The fellows that built the deck were able to take care of the damage to the foundation, repaired it like new and assured us we would not have that problem again. We decided to go with Zuri rather than redwood, getting to old to maintain a wood deck like it should be. As part of a gut and rebuild, I tore off two decks from my hillside home. When it was time to contract for new decks I went to one of the Marin Civic Center "Home & Garden" shows, where I spoke to multiple companies, and had a few of them come out to the property. After getting bids, it was time to look at prior jobs by the different installers. I drove up to Sonoma county, where most of DeckMaster's work is, and was shown probably a half-dozen jobs. The work looked clean and professional, and I made the commitment. Oh - I should mention: I had decided to go with ipe ("Brazilian teak") so this was not an inexpensive project. This update is a little late in coming. I'm still pretty unhappy with the quality of the wood (about 10% of the boards have serious cupping and splintering issues), I'm kind of afraid to walk on it barefoot or let my dog play around on it for fear of getting a bad splinter. One thing I do have to mention, is that since my initial negative review, Weston has contacted me twice and offered to "see what he can do" about some of the bad boards. Once we get into the spring, I'll take him up on his offer and update my review. read more

We forgot to mention a major innovation and improvement in the construction of our new deck. The system and fasteners designed by Weston for attaching the deck boards to the joists are invisible and not exposed to the weather. This eliminates nail and screw heads that leave holes in the deck surface. These holes in the deck surface boards weather and cause the deck boards to deteriorate over time resulting in protruding screws and nails and loose deck boards eventually leading to added maintenance and repairs if not outright replacement of the deck (we speak from experience). Plus, Weston's invisible fastener system results in a deck floor that looks every bit as beautiful as a new finished interior wood floor. I was prepared for Weston's bid to be at the high end after his presentation and free consultation. His bid was competitive making for an easy decision. Was there anything we would have done differently? Not a thing. Weston gained our confidence at the outset making the process enjoyable from start to finish. What a relief in this day and age when inexperienced lay persons like ourselves find a contractor who is excellent in all aspects. read more

He listened very closely to our desires, and created a design that fit in well with our hilly terrain, surrounding redwoods, and desire for low maintenance. Miguel suggested some improvements which Weston had discussed at the beginning, but we didn't realize the value of until we saw the deck being built. The improvements were excellent.
