It is at the lower elevation and to the north of the town. When we visited, it was unattended and there were no staff inside. The restrooms were open and in decent shape, located on the west side of the building. It is a long building with 3-4 large rooms made of light wood with historical pictures on the walls. Parking is available in the lot that surrounds the station, though it depends on what is open at the time and how busy the area is. Many other visitors noted in their reviews that the building is not open at night and operates on a very limited schedule. A little research shows that Amtrak and MARC trains both serve this station. Throughout the day my party and I observed trains passing through without stopping, giving visitors a sense of how active the rail line still is. Overall, it is worth seeing for its historic look, but travelers should plan ahead since services are limited and the station may not be staffed. Up the hill to the south is the town and down the hill to the east visitors can view the Armory grounds, River overlook, and John Brown's fort.

I'd been intending to hike the Maryland Heights Trail for a number of years; first with a coworker…read moreat a job I'd left 9 years ago, and later with our daughter who now has a 4 year old, a 2 year old, and is 7 months pregnant. A retired Instagram friend from New Mexico posted his intent to take the hike in early November, so I invited myself to join him. We went on a beautiful Friday, so there was no worry of eother rain or extremes in temperature. My friend said that he'd been training on his treadmill for this day, thus I was a little nervous. We walked across the iron grate bridge crossing the Potomac and began the ascent. By my tracking device, the entire hike was 5 miles round trip. There were no crowds, so our trek was pleasant and we were able to have great conversation with minimal breathlessness on the way up (although my treadmill friend did tell me a couple times to go ahead without him!) When we finally reached the heights I was almost blown away, figuratively as well as literally, as my body shook with the sudden gusts of wind. The view was incredible as you might ascertain from my photographs. I took a number of pics including several videos, one of an Amtrack train traversing the bridge adjacent to the one we'd walked. We hung out for probably 40 minutes and then commenced the less strenuous walk down. What a workout and what a glorious view! From what I can discern, there is not a way for emergency vehicles to ascend the heights, and I don't believe that a helicopter can land anywhere, so do be cautious. Also, because of the paroxysmal gusts of wind, don't get too close to the edge of the precipice. It's a must see for any hiker or nature lover!

Here at Harpers Ferry Historical Park in West Virginia, this Maryland Heights Trail may be one of…read morethe best hikes in the park. Due to construction in late September 2025, to access the trailhead, I had to take an extended 20-minute shuttle ride from the Visitor Center to an alternative location to begin the hike. Walking the paved path for 1/4 of a mile, there'll be a sign mentioning to access the trail...you must cross the street and go around a barrier on the initial climb. Maryland Heights Trail is 4.6 miles roundtrip gaining 1200 feet in elevation, but the pathway is clearly defined and suitable for most hikers. There'll be a halfway junction where to continue on...you must veer to the right as the Maryland Heights Trail changes its name to The Overlook Cliff Trail for 1.4 more miles. Next, follow the "4/10th's of a mile sign" to the right again, for the remaining push to the lookout. From here the trail descends downhill with some pesky rocks to maneuver around before noticing a total clearing of the forest and the wide open observation viewpoint. Arriving at Maryland Heights Overlook, it's a 300-foot vertical cliff showcasing Harpers Ferry's Historic Town at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. I was fortunate enough to even catch a CSX train crossing the original Baltimore and Ohio railroad tracks. Overall, Harpers Ferry is nestled within a vintage West Virginia backdrop consumed among colorfully green forests and mountains. Btw, if you're interested, you can walk the cobblestone streets of the Lower Town District. It's a throwback in time to the 1800's. Exploring around offers documented narratives helping to preserve our nation's history with more opportunities to appreciate nature at the banks of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. In the end, hiking this Maryland Heights Trail at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park makes for a worthwhile visit.

We stayed at the firefly for 1 night for a quick girls trip. It was $124 a night, now it has…read moreincreased to $134. I feel the price is a bit high as the amenities offered are the same as the regular cabins ($80-$85 per night). The firefly did just recently add a window AC unit and one electric plug prior to our stay. There are no lights so a lantern is still needed. We didn't use the charcoal grill as it was rusted, we opted for cooking on the fire instead. They do not allow outside firewood and they charge $7 a bag for wood and $5 for kindling. Unfortunately their firewood was very thinly chopped, maybe 1-2 inch slivers so the firewood didn't last long. The shower and bathrooms were clean and close to the campsite which we enjoyed. The area felt very safe. Though there appeared to be a ring camera with lights just above the open showers which I found a bit odd, I assume it was pointing to the other side of the building. Easily accessible dumpster and water for cooking/washing dishes. Parking is very hard to come by so if you bring more than one vehicle this may be a problem. The cabin was well kept, clean and comfy mattresses. Lights didn't work on the upper balcony but we enjoyed the lower deck. The only thing I found off putting were over kill on signage around the campsite. Quiet hours with a $250 fine for noises past 11pm or before 7am, signs regarding usage of amenities .... It appeared they didn't really want you using too many resources. Overall, we really enjoyed the cabin, the addition of the AC was great, facility was well kept, but I felt it was over priced.
