Always love checking out a new place in the city; and I lucked out because this is right near campus, they have a space next to rabble coffee. It's an interesting collection of magazines, some I have seen before others I haven't so I had to pick up something that I had never seen before to check out. They also have records which you can't be mad at, love the options to check out music. There are cold drinks, I had to get circle city kombucha because it's my favorite, snack options are great as well I love crispy wasabi snacks and they had them of course so I picked up a bag. They also have what I like to call potions, which really are just a local selection of holistic serums, soaks and lip balms. Great Addition to the neighborhood and wish them all the success! I'll visit again.

DEAR MOM is open! Welcome to the neighborhood! Zines + Bodega

The Republic - Julies response that she denied ever writing to a customer.

Total lack of customer service! My card got scammed called in with new card paid for two months…read morehad them put on auto payment - got 3 papers then nothing!! Called them again - after talking with grumpy customer service - she finally said she'd look into it and call back - nothing Sad part is I loved my 'paper' And my carrier was awesome.

I went into the Republic Newspaper this morning to speak to Julie McClure. I was told that I had to…read morewait because she had a deadline to meet. I sat their patiently. Julie came down the hall and abruptly told me that I only had a few minutes that she had a deadline to meet, also stating that I should have called ahead of time. We went into an office and she started speaking as if she already knew why I was there. I said to her that we had met her before when I placed an ad in the paper for an event, trying to lighten the mood. Julie was very aggressive. I had gone there to discuss an offer that the Republic does for the public. It has to do with rating Restaurants in the area, customers can place an orchid or an onion. I told her that my customers have come in to tell me that they have placed an orchid in the paper but they have never seen it posted. Julie interrupted me and said that it was me trying to get free advertising, and that I was the one sending in the requests. I told her that I would have to of had numerous emails in order to do that. Julie also stated that she was not going to place anymore orchids in the paper for my restaurant that she gets too many a day, sometimes 20 a day. I explained to her that I must be doing something right if customers are requesting an orchid, and again this is a free service offered to the public. Julie stated that the emails were somewhat worded the same and tried to say that since they have somewhat of the same wording that I am doing this to get free adverting and that I should pay for an Ad instead of begging my customers to place an orchid. Hmmmm, I do not beg my customers and have never said to them to place an orchid. I am not from here and never heard of an orchid until the past few months. They have come to me and said they did so. That's when Julie said to me oh so you know about the orchids, accusing me that since I know about them that I must be the one sending all the emails. I told her that she is too aggressive for me to speak to and that she needs to be a little more rational. I asked Julie McClure for her supervisor and she stated she is the supervisor, I then asked to speak to her superior and she told me that there is no one above her. I had seen a gentlemen in an office, I asked to speak to him, Julie told me that he was too busy. Funny how she could see through a wall to assume he was busy. Julie denied her email that was sent to a customer, until I read it word for word with her email attached. Julie again stated that I was trying to get free advertising and that I was campaigning through the orchids and that if I want to advertise the Republic will do so. I have given the Republic my business in advertising before, sad to say I called them and told them that their wording was misleading and the address was wrong in the Ad. They were to reimburse me in some form but never did. I also placed an ad for help wanted and never received one call. I was heading in the Republic on Thursday, I was going to place an Ad for a Grand Opening and another as for help wanted, until a customer came in and gave me the email from Julie. That of which Julie thinks it's my email....lol. I explained to her that the request is from a customer, in fact the customer had spelt my name wrong and also the restaurant was misspelled. Julie stated that the email is similar to other emails that people request an orchid. No it is not, trying to prove this point to her was the fact that the servers name that was mentioned I only hired about a week ago. Julie tried to dismiss me, yet with her unprofessional mannerism I explained that the Republic offers this and for some odd reason it is not offered to me, WHY because I get a lot of customers wanting to thank us. I told Julie that I must be doing something right. She again stated that it had to be me sending in requests. I told her that I was grateful for my customers and have always remained humble. Julie denied her statements to my customers, and just because my customers have notified me of this situation Julie claims that I had something to do with this. That is not how I run a business and I told Julie McClure to take a look at the reviews. Julie said she will not put in any more Orchids for the restaurant, because she feels it is all a fake. I stood up and said to her, so you are refusing to let me speak to management, you have called me a liar and have told me that you will not recognize my customers requests, I will call the owner of the paper and let them know that your aggressiveness and the way you handle the public is downright wrong. I always thought that Journalists had to research facts before they go assuming they have the full story. Julie is so wrong here. I let her know that I will never place an ad in their newspaper. Hey Julie did you notice that I didn't put the name of the Restaurant in this review. Believe me if I want to advertise I have the funds to do so but never again with THE REPUBLIC.

I've long been a fan of the Half Price Books chain, a chain started in Dallas in 1972. You could…read morepretty much say I've grown up with Half Price Books. I'm pretty stunned that I've never reviewed this location, though I don't frequent it nearly as much since I moved into Lawrence Township. I grew up in Pike Township and this really was my location for many years. In my opinion, it's one of the most accessible of the Indy HPB locations and I've always been pleased with my experiences here. I was in this area checking out His Place Eatery and nostalgia demanded I return for a visit to this HPB. This location has two entrances. Both sides offer accessible parking, though the side facing West 86th Street is definitely more accessible. One side has a double glass doorway, the other has a single glass door. Both sides offer curb cuts, though the side facing West 86th Street has a much easier grade. For those familiar with HPB, there's the consistency you can expect - reasonably priced books, CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, and even some VHS. Books are incredibly well organized and there's always a nicely done clearance section. They also have novelty stuff - like t-shirts, games, etc. The employees here are always friendly - I've had multiple friends work for HPB over the years and they always praise the chain. Most, of course, end up leaving for financial reasons, however, they all remember HPB with a sense of nostalgia. On this visit, I noticed there was a local author doing a book signing. Since I nearly always support local authors, I bought his book. The aisles are always in good shape here. The store is clean. There's a public bathroom that's pretty accessible. Employees are always willing to help. And yes, you can still sell them your used books/CDs/movies. And yes, you still won't get much. I've been to just about every HPB location in Central Indiana. This one has a special place in my heart as I really kind of grew up with it. I guess you could say it's my favorite HPB in Indy. This HPB is well organized, has a wonderful selection, offers friendly and helpful service, and is likely the most accessible HPB in the society. All in all, it's a winner and it sure was nice to get back for a visit.
