Side by side the two oranges of the season

I really enjoy Dear Annie. I've come twice and both times sat outside which is a lovely little patio on the sidewalk. Very casual while still feeling proper tidy - their wine selection is unique and uplifting, the small bites are eclectic and yummy though a little tough if you need modifications. The service is very kind, easy going and welcoming. Definitely recommend for an easy meetup spot or spontaneous special treat! The inside decor is chic and fun as well with curious kitchen collections!

Dear Annie is a fine natural wine bar with a cozy ambiance, though I do understand where several of the past reviews come from. As a disclaimer, we (party of 2) did not order any food while we were at Dear Annie. We came in on a Saturday evening around 5pm for a bit over an hour. We were promptly seated by the window. The ambiance inside is cozy, and the wall of wine bottles and overall living room vibe felt nice, especially given that the day we went was quite rainy. We ordered two glasses of wine total: a 2021 Sangiovese and a 2021 Sauvignon Blanc. During this service, in which we order at the front of the bar, the server gave us a tasting sip before we committed to the glass. The wines themselves were also good, and were similar to those I've enjoyed at similar natural wine bars in California. The reason that this is not 5 stars: it simply felt too expensive. The prices of the glasses themselves are on par with what you see these days at local restaurants serving natural wine (e.g. Toro and Coppa in the South End), but the auto ~23% gratuity just felt like too much. With all fees included, our total bill came to $40+ for just two drinks over a bit over an hour. For what we got, it just felt like too much. I'm not writing off Dear Annie by any means, and I may be back in the future. Overall, it's a fine natural wine bar.

The coziest spot to have a glass of wine on a cold day. Such a pleasant experience, I can't understand why it has such low ratings. Would happily go again!

Dear Annie is the sister resto of Rebel Rebel (a James Beard nominated for its wine program), so I decided to check them out because I wanted food to go with my wine. The long table is community style seating and there are little tables along the walls to seat groups of 1-4 people. There's also a lovely outdoor patio with additional seating. You won't have a dedicated server, you will have to order your food and wine at the counter/bar. Although, it's a wine bar if you are wanting food and lean more towards the carnivore side, this place might not be for you. It's gears more towards fish and vegetables. I ordered the kimchi deviled eggs, oysters (with a cucumber mimotte), and the fish of the day (which was a poached cod). I loved all of my chooses and with the help of the server, all completed each other well. For me, the house made hot sauce was the star of the deviled eggs. Oysters were lovely and I think there was some white pepper to make the cucumber mimotte stand out from others. If you are a person who looks for more comforting food and are not adventurous eater this place might not be for you. I wasn't sure what wine to choose, and the server gave me three options that she believed would pair nicely with all my chooses. And they do have interesting chooses like a rosé that could fool you for a light red, but I ultimately chose the orange (and went back later for the rosé). There is a 23% gratuity automatically added to each bill (20% for front of house tip and 3% -if you order food- for back of house). For those that grumble about not having a server and still paying 20% ... hear me out. My 20% tip went to my servers knowledge on the wine she was selling and helped me decide on based on my preferences. Honestly, 3% is little for home much back of the house busts their asses to provide service in the form of food. And I would know, since I've worked with a James Beard nominated chef in the back of the house.

Dear Annie had been on my list to try for a while after it made some of the local hot restaurant lists a few years back. Unfortunately, it did not live up to expectations. The food was good, but not especially notable, and priced excessively even by Boston standards. The fish tacos, $9 each, and deviled eggs, $5 per HALF egg, were tasty but certainly not special enough to merit the price tag. The space was cute but very casual and not especially comfortable - giving hip coffee shop energy rather than charming restaurant or wine bar as I had hoped. The restaurant is also not full service - guests have to order food and wine at a counter, get their own utensils and water, and the menu descriptions are written on a chalkboard in the corner of the restaurant so you either have to ask the staff to describe every item on the paper menu (which just lists general terms like 'seasonal salad') or walk across the restaurant and read off a wall. To top it off, there is an obligatory 23% added to the bill. While this is in lieu of tip, it felt like one last insult to injury given how over-priced the food already was and that they do not even have full table service. Eating out is one of my great joys and I am happy to spend more for a memorable dining experience but the balance of cost to quality and service at Dear Annie was just way off for me. While I could potentially recommend for a glass of wine and a snack with a friend, I would not recommend for dinner. My partner and I left dissatisfied and almost $200 in the hole...

Even if you don't end up liking the dish, the tapas size is small so you're not losing too much. And most importantly, most of the dishes I tried had garlic, salt, pepper, and olive oil as the predominant flavor profile. The perfect seasoning profile for a non-adventurous eater! For the more adventurous eaters, I'd highly recommend sampling from their charcuterie and cheese selection. I enjoyed trying different combinations of cheese and meat with the bread to see which flavor profile was my favorite (also a good activity for Remy's friend from Ratatouille). As other reviewers mentioned, you can try a lot of dishes but the tables aren't that big so you have to be a little bit strategic if you want to dip the bread in the leftover sauces.

My partner and I couldn't decide what to get from their a la carte menu so we ended up going for the four-course tasting menu instead ($85/pp), picking the omnivore and pescatarian options to see if we could try more items. We were actually a little underwhelmed at first, but the tasting menu got better and better after each course. The tasting menu started with some of their in-house pickles and ferments. We had some onion, green beans, and cucumbers, which I wished were crunchier. Each pickle had a good amount of acidity but I wouldn't have minded if the flavors were punchier. The first course of the tasting menu was a salad. Visually it just looked like a pile of lettuce, but they added a savory garlicky sauce and a sprinkle of asparagus salt that allowed the dish to feel refreshing and hearty at the same time. The radishes were crunchy, peppery, and delicious, and we were very pleased to find that many of the later courses also included raw radish. We ended up getting different dishes for the second course, one of which involved deep-fried arancini-like balls of risotto with a creamy sauce, and the other had a cold plant-based loaf served with a vibrant garlic sauce. Both dishes featured some fresh greens that balanced the carby heaviness. By the time we got to the third course, we realized that Forage makes their vegetables shine. The omnivore course came with a steak while the pescatarian course had a pan-fried fish, both of which were also available to be ordered a la carte. While we thought that the steak and fish were seasoned and prepared well, the vegetables stood out to us even more. They weren't prepared in any crazily innovative way but the chefs made the natural flavors of the vegetables shine in a way that complemented the rest of the dish very well. After the third course, we added one optional cheese course ($22/pp) that came with even more radishes. The hazelnut shortbread was super buttery and everything went well together. I was already feeling pretty full and was glad that we only got one cheese course instead of two. Finally, the fourth course had a maple semifreddo with seaweed crisps and a caramel nut sauce. This was amazing and something that I'll think about for a long time! I could really taste the maple flavor in the semifreddo, and the cold creaminess went so well with the salty, crispy seaweed and nutty, buttery caramel. The balance of textures and flavors in the dessert was excellent. Along with the tasting menu, we added one wine pairing ($60/pp). We liked some of the wines so much that we asked for more information about them and learned that some of the wines are imported in small batches. After experiencing how well vegetables are prepared here, I'd love to visit during different seasons to sample their vegetarian menu items.

Forage's menu is fresh, in season, locally sourced, and a little weird! But that's okay! We started with the scallops and the char spread served with a milk bun. The bun and char spread was DELICIOUS. I could eat a whole tub of it. The scallops are poached in Parmesan oil, and topped with fennel and ... black ants. Yes, actual dried, crunchy ants. It was a fun dish but it was actually the fennel that threw my palate off. For mains we were indecisive so we got 3 big plates. The cabbage Alfredo served with mushroom bacon and winter squash, the green peppercorn hanger steak served with cornbread (!) and mixed veg, and the New England seafood bake. The cabbage Alfredo was 10/10; incredible flavors and textures. The steak was of course amazing. And the seafood bake was good! We may have been hitting a food coma wall at that point, but the fish was a little underseasoned. Overall my opinion has changed. Forage is a spot you return to if you're tired of the monotony of your typical restaurant. I don't think any other spot in Greater Boston is serving scallops topped with black ants, but hey, it was fun! And once again, the staff is AMAZING. SO kind and fun and really lean into giving you the best dining experience.

So naturally... here we are. I couldn't leave my daughter out of this beauty- so after dinner nearby, we intentionally skipped dessert there and rushed here just before closing. Thank God we did. And service was great even placing the order by phone. The chocolate mousse is just heavenly. Deeply rich with an intense chocolate flavor that was luxurious and comforting at the same time. Is it too forward to rate just on their chocolate mousse alone? Maybe? But so what- it's just great!

Looking for something good to eat and we happened upon this place within walking distance of our hotel. The menu was mysterious online and didn't really represent what we stumbled into that night. We show up and speak to who I believe to be the hostess. We had some nice small talk while we were heading to the table. Half way there she asked where we were from and we told her "the most beautiful land in the world, Memphis, Memphis, Memphis, Memphis". IFKYK. She was like, "no way". Yes way, I say. She then tells us she lived in Memphis for a long time and this place is modeled after a place she waited tables at while she lived there. Turns out she was the owner. I asked what it was and lo and behold she says one of my favorite places in our delightful town. Flight. I then put two and two together and realize why the menu was so hard for me to understand online. It's just like Flight. You can get a made "flight" of foods or drinks or you can build your own flight of food from all of the choices. Now I'm stoked. I love Flight! I had a nice IPA and C had a nice fancy drink too. We both had soups to start. They were pretty good. We both had a flight each after our apps. Food was good, not great. Portions were insane. We probably left half of it there. It felt like such a waste. Had I known that it was going to be so much, I would have ordered a single dish. Each one seemed like a good sized meal in my opinion. My favorite things were the lamb chops and the grit cake that came with one of my dishes. I poked around at the others some but all of these. C's pot pie was interesting with a chicken tender shoved in it. I didn't care of her other two dishes. The Beef Wellington was fair at best. We skipped dessert as we were so damned full already. Nice place, great ownership, I wish the food was better. Very nice steak knife I will add. That means a lot and pushed the star up one. That may sound strange but I don't care. 26 - 65
