I was informed that the underground service conductor issue was the responsibility of Xcel Energy, not the homeowner. I contacted Xcel Energy directly, and they inspected the issue and completed the necessary work within two days at no cost to me. Based on these facts, I believe I was asked to pay more than $2,000 for work that either was unnecessary or was the responsibility of the utility company rather than the homeowner. In my opinion, this was a serious attempt to charge me for work that I did not need to pay for. I strongly recommend that anyone receiving a costly estimate for service entrance or meter-related electrical work obtain a second opinion and contact their utility company before authorizing repairs. It is a very straightforward, 20-minute job. I have paid $150 for this exact service in the past, and a quick Google search confirmed the standard rate is around $250 to $300. Imagine my absolute shock when the technician quoted $724.85!! When he saw my stunned reaction, he said, "Let me see what I can do," tapped around on his screen, and lowered it to $608. He also quoted me roughly $500 just to hang two vanity lights that were already fully wired and just needed to be connected--another basic 20-minute task. My husband came home about 15 minutes later and was incensed. He asked the technician how he could possibly justify those numbers and firmly told him he was trying to take advantage of me.
