Feel compelled to rate Tim, because he came so highly recommended by a City of St. Paul inspector! The inspector saw my site, gave me some great answers, said he'd even contact the other electrician that needs to do a little bit more work to close an open electrical permit. Because I need so much electrical work done and because I live in a 100 year old house (that most modern contractors don't know how to remove and reinstall plaster walls), the inspector gave me Tim Kunkel's name and said 'we see his work all over town and really like his electrical work--it's done right, plus he comes from a 2 other generations of electricians that have done great work thru the decades.' I've hired Tim's service twice in the past year. Both times I got several quotes which were all about the same, but I'd heard anecdotally, and here on Yelp, that this was a reliable company. I can now echo that. One of the jobs was to install a new outlet for an electric range that was replacing a gas range (very predictable job). The other could have been complicated due to the age of my house; I needed a ceiling light replaced in a spot where there was no box and 100-plus year-old wiring. They sent two guys in to make sure it went right and got it done quickly with no issues. Not just professional, knowledgeable, and efficient; they were also patient and compassionate - qualities that electricians don't need to have but qualities that meant the world at a time when it mattered most. I was looking for an electrician in late February 2022 on behalf of my parents: my Dad had been in and out of the hospital for long stretches and my Mom was spending 12 hours a day at his bedside. They had delayed trying to fix a bunch of lighting issues in their home - flickering lights, fixtures that didn't work anymore - and with my Dad taking another downturn, my Mom was desperate to remedy something. I messaged Tim with our needs and alluded to needing some flexibility with time given I lived out of state and was back in Minnesota desperately trying to help my Mom who was never home. He replied that although they were booked til April, he had sympathy for our situation and would see what he could do. The next morning when I called, he had two of his team members (Jack and Rocco, I think? I wish I could remember their names - they were so great!) arrive within the hour and they methodically walked thru my parents house to assess needs - some of which were honestly just burned out light bulbs or tripped circuit breakers. They were so respectful though, never once questioning why I had called them for things so obvious. They were kind in questioning my Mom after I pulled her out of an emotional Palliative Care meeting because I couldn't answer what they needed. They even took the time to educate me about light bulbs and lighting and make recommendations that I could pass along to my parents - offering to write it out on my behalf. And at the end when they confirmed that they had addressed everything, they acknowledged that my family was going through a really tough time and that the things they did were simple enough that they weren't going to charge us. I quite literally burst into tears at the thoughtfulness. My Dad passed away 8 days ago and because Tim Kunkel Electric fixed the light in my parent's garage the week prior, we were able to bring him home through that entryway - the only way to bring him home - and he could be with us in his final 36 hours. Their flexibility in not waiting to help until April was THE thing that allowed for this silver lining of my Dad being home, surrounded by love. I could not recommend them more highly. As an aside, I want to personally thank Tim Kunkel: even though it was other team members who came to our home, this professionalism and compassion starts and ends at the top. I contacted Tim on 9/15.2020 by phone, briefly described the work needed, said I had some pics from a St. Paul condo inspection, Tim asked me to send the pics to him via Email, I did so on the same day, and sent one add'l Email the next day to ask about his schedule. Never received any response from him, neither phone nor Email. Tim and his team did a complete overhaul of the electrical system in a small condo that my wife and I are moving into. From start to finish Tim treated me kindly and respectfully. When I described my project and made some comments that clearly showed my lack of electrical knowledge, Tim (to his strong credit!) didn't talk down to me or try to flaunt his own knowledge. His tone was kind when spoke with me. He took time to chat with me a bit and expand my understanding which helped me feel more comfortable! I was aware that this would be an expensive and several day project (I needed a new panel/circuit box, a dryer hookup, LED lighting and switches, as well as several outlets, changes in the walls). Tim put together a bid that broke out costs individually and as a whole project in case my budget prevented me from doing it all at once. He was good at explaining which parts of the project were dependant on other parts, and which could be stand alone items. We had a couple bumps in our email communication, but Tim was available to me during the day via text (and phone) promptly and consistently as the job developed. So after we found out it was not Excel's issue, I called back Tim at 6:30 at night. He answered right away, and had us try some things ourselves. Those things didn't work, so he had us send some photos of our fuse box, gave us his hourly rate, and scheduled a time for the next morning. I mentioned that my schedule was a little tighter than he would allow, yet he answered all my questions with a great attitude and explained things that I was able to understand easily.
