I can see the coffee being roasted. This business helps the local economy by employing people in manufacturing in Orange. The people who work there are decent and polite and easy to deal with, even if they do work for a charismatic visionary who dresses up like a pirate. We've been ordering from Dean's Beans for years, both for the coffee and to support Dean & Co in their steadfast commitment to fair trade principles in their most authentic form. Prices are below supermarket prices for equivalent products ($9-11 per lb, generally, on the lower end if you order 5lb vs 1lb bags). Some of our go-to blends depending our mood include Moka Java, Moka Sumatra, and Uprising! We have always been happy, both with the coffee and the customer service. Just yesterday I messed up by placing two orders, one for 5lb of aztec half-caf (love it!) and another for sugar and dark chocolate (both at below supermarket prices for equivalent products -- check them out!), incurring two separate shipping charges. I contacted customer service and received a prompt and positive reply, and within the hour my orders were combined into one with a single shipping charge. Re. the negative review related to customer service, remember that they're a really small team -- I suspect that the reviewer's email not being responded to was just a freak thing that happens to all of us periodically in this era of info overload. Give them a call, communicate your concern, and I'm 100% positive that they'll do right by you. read more

Had not tried Deans Beans before. Received a gift certificate for Christmas and ordered three different lbs. from their Dark Roast category. I like my coffee a little on the strong side, sometimes adding more grounds to achieve that. I was looking forward to try this coffee mostly because of the "Fair Trade" label but boy was it weak. More water taste than coffee. Added more grounds, same taste. Ground it super fine, same result. Tried this on all three different lbs. No difference. I actually bought a pop corn popper (at the thrift store) and roasted the beans a little more, same taste. If you like your coffee to taste like coffee, would not recommend. read more

Every so often someone gives me other "fantastic" coffee to try but I am always eager to get back to Deans Beans. I work for a non-profit and I had a hard time finding coffee that was in line with our own mission that was reasonably priced (no Dunkin or Folgers coffee for us! Yuck!). I had tried (using my co-workers as guinea pigs) many different types of coffee, but when I looked at fair trade, organic, shade grown, local coffee roasters, we ended up paying an arm and leg for it - which just does NOT fit into the budget of a non-profit. When I found Dean's Beans, it was like seeing the light! The prices are amazingly reasonable (actually dirt cheap!), they have a business program for bulk orders (5# bags anyone? Yes!) and their coffee is super fantastic! So far the consensus is that Ring of Fire is the favorite, but I keep trying other blends as well just to mix it up and keep people on their toes. Even though you have to pay shipping, it is still cheaper than most "higher end" coffee and I feel great about the company, their product and I love getting Dean's emails! I have just decided to start buying my own personal coffee stash from Dean's as well -- what took me so long! Definitely try Dean's Beans -- you will not be disappointed with ANYTHING -customer service, product, price, selection -- all of it is fantastic! Now get brewing! read more

This is my favorite coffee, period. Not only is the quality amazing, but the company insists upon ethical business practices. They only sell fair trade organic coffees, and the founder (Dean) is deeply involved in improving the coffee industry's ethical standards and improving the lives of the people who work on the coffee farms. And did I mention that the coffee tastes amazing? Yes I did. My favorite is the Ring of Fire, a dark-roasted blend of coffees from three countries that grow in volcanic soils. It's dark and smoky, fairly heavy bodied, with a balancing hint of sweetness. At $7.25/lb (as of this writing), the prices beat out all the big coffee chains. Other offerings include medium- and light-roasted blends, naturally flavored coffees, green coffee for home roasting, organic hot cocoa mix, and other coffee accessories. In Western Mass you can find the beans at Cornucopia Foods in Northampton and Common Grounds in Great Barrington. In Irvine, CA you can buy them from the woman with the fair trade goods table at the Saturday Farmers' Market. I usually order online. I highly recommend it! read more

Update review 2013: We just started becoming regular customers here about 6 months ago. Fair prices on fair trade coffee. If you are driving here to pick up coffee, and are looking for specific brands, call them the day before and they will put it aside for pickup on the next day. They appear to do just enough for what they need to ship out for the day, and sometimes they might not have enough after packaging them all up. You know you are getting fresh roasted coffee the day of, or just after roasting here. I love trying all types of different coffees, and they keep it interesting with their monthly specials. They get small batches from different parts of the world. Instead of buying the same coffee over and over again, it allows us to constantly try different types. We pick up a bag or two every week on our morning walks. I'm glad they keep prices reasonable for their customers. It doesn't get any better! read more

I have been buying green beans from Dean's Beans off and on for over ten years. As a home roaster, I appreciate their packaging, their selection of beans and their timeliness. I only live a couple of hundred miles away, so usually I get a shipment within a couple of days and their shipping costs are very, very reasonable. When i hear, see or drink deans beans two words come to mind. "OH BOY". Deans beans coffee should be sold as a laxative on the shelf at your local CVS. I first tried deans beans at a baseball breakfast banquet and let me tell you! worst mistake i have ever made in my life! Driving home i had to stop at a port o potty so i did not poop my slacks. I was tormented by my family and they have never let me live this incident down. tho the coffee tasted okay it had no comparison to the european stomach bomb it gave me. so for anyone out there this is a word of advice to you all. If you drink deans beans coffee. make sure you are in a 1 mile radius of a toilet because let me tell you something. your going to need it! read more
