Made a reservation for four and had an unexpected last minute +1 but they were able to fit us in pretty quickly on a Friday evening. Overall, this was easily the best meal of my week and a half in Belfast. The starters were smaller than expected but nicely presented and tasteful. I had the lamb for my main and it was significantly more food than expected, five full slices of lamb. I was pretty stuffed. I subbed the zucchini for carrot which was a puree somewhat like savory mashed sweet potato, not roasted whole carrots like I thought. I don't drink much but got a cocktail which I quite enjoyed. Desserts were enjoyed by all. I can see why they've gotten a Michelin bib gourmand award several times: good quality food at a price point that doesn't break the bank. read more

Was at deanes on Saturday night for a friends 30th. I had called and made the reservation for the table well in advance and the staff were extremely helpful in organising a large party. They emailed across the menu. I was incredibly impressed with the service and attentiveness of our waiter Chris. The meal its self was amazing. I had the goats cheese starter followed by steak and chips as a main and some yummy chocolate raspberry dessert that I can't remember the name off. This was all £30. Can't even thing of anywhere else in Belfast that you would get this quality of food and service for this price. Would defiantly go back read more

Be Warned - Gluten Free, Not!! Really sorry to have to say this as I have had many a great meal at Deanes, and the last one was lovely until it resulted in two days of awful sickness for my wife, who is Gluten Intolerant. Despite asking and receiving assurance that the Goats Cheese Salad and Salmon was Gluten free she spent two days in bed having a huge reaction. Contacted Deanes directly rather than posting on social media and was offered a Glass of Bubbles by way of apology. I responded accordingly and was told that it was probably cross contamination, which to be fair it could be but the level of response, understanding and contrition if far below what you would expect from such an established restaurant, especially after paying over £300 for the privilege. You have now lost a very loyal customer / what a shame. read more

Deane's at Queens was stop number two and here we were treated to a Cosmopolitan on arrival before being shown how to make them and a couple of the group actually had their Tom Cruise moment and made their own!! Sean and his team made us all feel very welcome and were polite and were always there on hand topping up water and drinks. Chris Fearon prepared a wonderful starter of Rancini which was extremely tasty and left us all wanting more. It's easy to see why Chris is a regular in The Great British Menu. read more

I went here for Sunday lunch and was really expecting a lot more from it considering it's owned by Michelin star chef- Michael Deane. We hadn't booked but there was no issue getting a table. Staff were friendly and the restaurant has a beautiful layout- really modern and nicely lit. The menu was quite small. We both ended up ordering the sirloin steak with chips @ £26 each we thought it would be top quality. Unfortunately it was far from it. I asked for mine to be cooked medium and when I cut into it was very red. My partner order theirs medium well and it was even worse than mine. So bad it had to be sent back. Both of us were also shocked at how tough the meat was. I've honestly had better steaks from local supermarkets! I think it's a very poor reflection of a restaurant if a steak can't be cooked properly or a good quality cut of meat served, especially when charging the prices they do. This was a very disappointing meal. We chose not to stay for dessert. Staff attempted to rectify it by removing the 10% service charge which is standard no matter how many dine! The best place I ate in Ireland, probably also the most expensive and I didn't mind.I was really hungry and thirsty when I hit here for a late lunch .I had fish cake followed by some kind of braised beef with root vegetables.My wife had soup and and a very good , simple fish.There was a reasonable lunch special which kept prices down, although this is the only place where there was a separate VAT charge - I wondered what that was about but didn't feel like getting into it.They add a service charge , which is fine with me.Service was extremely friendly and accommodating.Our waiter was Polish .Eastern European service personnel is common through out Ireland .We had Poles , Hungarians, Slovaks and Romanians. When you are n't in the mood for ethnic or pub- this is a good , moderate splurge option. read more

New wave british. Solid cooking with seasonal ingredients that dig into the British peasant culture. Scandinavian minimal ambiance and warm feel. After living in San Francisco for 4 years it also looked kinda cheap, although it's probably not an everyday restaurant. Seriously, the black pudding was heaven! I am a big fan of Deane's Deli and was looking forward to an opportunity to try out Deane's at Queens, and the opportunity presented itself to me recently in the form of a colleagues maternity leave leaving do. A group of 11 of us went on a Friday for a late lunch and were shown to our seats, presented with menus and had drinks orders taken without any fuss. Our orders were then taken, and in time the food arrived. Unfortunately due to a muck up with the order, two of our party received the wrong order. Upon highlighting it to the waitress, we were informed that there would be a 15 minute wait for it to be rectified. Unfortunately as we were on a work lunch, time was of the essence and we could not afford to wait, so they had to eat the incorrect meals they were given, without any apology. The food itself was nice, I had the chicken and crushed potatoes and rather enjoyed it, but I certainly don't feel it was worth the £14 I paid for it, especially considering that they automatically add a 10% service charge to the bill. read more

Owned by chef and restaurateur Michael Deane, this was designed to be a less expensive alternative to his main restaurant in the town. The place looks nice enough and is quite spacious inside (with an attempt at being contemporary while understated), so we took our seats, optimistically settling in for our evening meal. I had to nip out to the car as I'd forgotten my phone. In my absence, the Maitre D' asked one of my friends if we would like water for the table, which my friend said we would, and when given the option of "still or sparkling", opted for 'still' thinking that that was the same as ordering tap water (mainly because the two tables nearest us had jugs of tap water). Unfortunately, upon my return the Maitre D' had already delivered a £3.50 bottle of still water. I'd like to think that this was just a communication, and I suppose technically the Maitre D' did nothing wrong, but I've been in enough establishments to recognise when somewhere is trying to squeeze everything they can out of your visit. Being a bit of a celebration for one of my friends, I wasn't going to make an issue of it on their night. The menu itself was quite limited and basic, so I opted for the Pork and Leek sausages with champ, wondering what an institution like this would do that would make this meal special. The answer came quickly enough - nothing. Fair enough, it was only sausages and champ, but I've seen pubs in the city-centre do it much better. I also would've got a better portion anywhere else - I almost had to search for the small portion of champ under the three sausages. For steak-lovers out there, one of my friends had the steak with chips, also commenting that the steak was nothing special. In all, it was an over-priced experience with very average food, possibly trying to trade off the name of its bigger sister in the city-centre - not a place I would ever return to. I think everyone had the same feeling when this bistro opened up a couple of years ago, Michael Deane's Michelin star food at a budget level, akin to their other bistro on Bedford Street. I'm not too sure it has worked. Throughout Belfast restaurants compete for the lunch crowd, fiercely, some only breaking even on the food itself. A great example of the quality of food you can get for lunch is Ginger. I've said it many times before but the lunch menu is outstanding. Simple, delicate and varied, home made fish and chips with tartare a measly £6.50 (in a restaurant with dishes costing up to £20 in the evening) Deanes fish and chips, during lunch is £11.50.... something just isn't quite right here in regards to the pricing. The food is good but over-priced, the staff friendly but a little lack-luster. There are better places to eat for a fraction of the price in my opinion. read more

Came here for a business lunch -- which was perfect, because I had walked by the night before, but after looking at the menu, realized I wasn't feeling like dropping a hefty penny. Luckily, my hosts took me here today. I had the carrot soup, which was not as thick/creamy as I expected it to be, I would consider the soup quite light. For my main lunch entree, I had the beer battered haddock, which was HUGE. The piece of fish was probably longer than my face, and I was told the piece I got was about 1/3 larger than their typical serving size. The fish meat was perfectly tender, sitting atop a bed of mashed peas, which I think was much better than say, Nando's mashed peas. Their fries also really impressed me, with awesome ketchup! That's right, the ketchup impressed me! It doesn't taste like the heinz ketchup in the states! read more

I'd heard some mixed reports about this place, so went to it with an open attitude. There was a big crowd of us going for lunch, about 15 in total, and we had booked ahead. We were seated at three separate tables, one behind the other with a 'wall' (tall back of a banquette) in between, so conversing with one half of the group over dinner was impossible. If a restaurant takes a booking for a large party, they should either be equipped to seat them together or inform them when they book that it will not be the case. That put us all in bad form to be honest. There was a very limited choice on the menu in my opinion, although I've been told it has improved recently. I had the pasta. Portion was really not great for the price we were paying, and it wasn't amazing. Also, none of the food was brought out at the same time, so some of us were only getting our main courses while others were finishing their dessert - it really didn't make for a good dining experience. Plus it was really bloody cold the whole time we were in there - and it must have been bad, since I don't feel the cold that easily. I would have also appreciated the staff having a word with the woman who let her toddler treat the place like a crèche or a branch of McDonalds, who ran around and screamed blue murder for most of our meal. An awesome dinning experience and great for private groups. The staff is very friendly and willing to help and even let us sample several wines to choose for the event being hosted here. The space is casual but upscale and very cozy. The inside is newly expanded and the outside tables are great for warm days with a nice view of the school. Service for the event was good but a bit slow paced for the large group with food taking some time to be delivered after ordering and between courses. The goat cheese salad was beyond amazing and inspired me to make some at home. The steak was pretty good, though a little over cooked and could have been better seasoned, likely as a result of the large group. Dessert was incredible with a nice selection of pudding and ice cream, all well flavored and balanced between sweet and savory. Wine was good though beyond the Rioja, nothing stood out that much to me. A very lovely dinning experience and one made greater with the ability to share it with a large group of friends here. read more

I first visited Deane's at Queen's one year ago for a meal. The service was great, the staff were friendly and the food was tasty. During the meal I asked the restaurant manager (Sean) if Deane's at Queen's could hold a wedding, as I was due to get married in a year. I was delighted to hear that they could and over the course of the last year i have set about organising my wedding via email and monthly meetings with Sean. My wedding was just one week ago and I have to say it truly exceeded my expectations. The weather was wonderful which allowed my guests to enjoy a drinks reception (which Deane's at Queen's allowed me to partly supply some beer from local breweries) on the Patio just outside the glass fronted restaurant. My wife and I were a little late following photographs but when we arrived we were greeted by the restaurant manager with a smile. My guests had a choice of 3 starters (potato & leek soup; beetroot salad with goats cheese, fishcake), 4 main courses (sirloin steak; organic roast chicken; Organic Salmon; Rigatoni) and 3 desserts (Chocolate tart; Mango Panna cotta; Ice-Cream) which were cooked to the highest of standard by Chris Fearon. We had the restaurant to ourselves (92 guests plus 40 evening guests) from 5pm - 2am, with a DJ coming and traditional Irish band playing after the meals. The service was the best I, or my guests, have ever experienced in a restaurant. I could not recommend this restaurant or it's staff highly enough, they are an absolute credit to restauranteurs in Belfast, and with around 20 guests from overseas attending the wedding, they were amazed by the quality of both food and service.
