The two stars allocated for my De Mole experience is a completely honest response. Had I chosen to compensate for all the rave reviews and accounted for the disappointment I suffered from the hype, then I wouldn't have even bother reviewing the place because there's no such thing as negative stars.
Going straight to the heart of the matter, imagine a fireworks display of tastelessness. That's how the food was, spectacularly bland. I'm eating my Enchiladas Rojos and legitimately wondering how they managed to take taste OUT of the dish. The beans and rice, though well cooked and of fine texture, had as much personality as a zombie. It seemed that all those little red flecks populated all over the rice was some kind of placebo seasoning and it certainly didn't fool me.
As for the enchiladas, I asked the waiter which was spicier of the Verdes or Rojos sauces. Unfortunately, I didn't realize "spicy" is Spanish for "tastes like mild sauce from Taco Bell", and even then it was still lacking in any flavor. But like the rice and beans mentioned above, I will say that the chicken inside was moist, but just completely drained of any taste.
My roommate got the "if-it's-actually-a-special-why-did-every-other-reviewer-order-the-not-so-special-skirt-steak-"special"". I get the inkling that "Special" means "we can charge $14 bucks for this because it's not listed on the menu and we'll pretend that the chef got some quality ingredients to whip it up". By his account, the dish, in following suit, was well cooked, but ultimately flavorless.
The decor was alright, probably just short of charming, but definitely clean. Okay, so the chip holder was kinda neat-o, but I'm not exactly fawning all over the place because some crumpled up brown bag reminded me of sack lunches from elementary school.
As for the service, I'm not going to criticize our bumbling and way too nervous 16 year old waiter as he fretfully stammers out the dinner special. He, and other staff, seemed genuinely friendly, so that can be forgiven. It was a bit weak sauce that we had to ration our water drinking though. Poor dude looked busy enough with only three tables to serve and we would've felt bad constantly hailing him over to fill up our shot glass sized water cups.
I wouldn't be honest if I said I wasn't perturbed, or at the very least, confused, of all the great reviews on yelp. For a place that I felt was, not even average in taste, I really can't fathom how it's garnering the attention that it does. It's unusual how in the predominantly Hispanic area of town, and of all the local dive restaurants around, why De Mole patrons were disproportionately white (and in this context, myself included). It feels like the restaurant was arbitrarily designated to THE Mexican place to go for gringos and undeservedly so. I say this with brutal honesty because of all the places I've reviewed, this is so overrated that I've become bitter.
I live within walking distance of Del Mole and I feel bad for all the people who traveled here to delude themselves that this place was any good just because they had to rationalize their waste of time.
Go to Queens Blvd, make a left and walk until you find El Vagabondo Taco Cart. Infinitely better for a 1/4 the price. read more
