Wow. Best chimichangas I've had. All the food is amazing. The hostess is great and this is a welcoming place. The menus are vast. Everything you'd expect from a Mexican restaurant, but Chano's execution is excellent. I'm always shocked this place isn't packed when I walk in. But I think it's because I've been lucky to be there during the weekday lunch. I can't recommend this place enough. It's comfy, the food is incredible and the service is top tier. read more

Ok so I've been hesitant to write this review because I came here due to all the five star reviews but I don't agree. It's a cute little whole in the wall spot, nothing crazy. Yes the staff were all smiles which is great. We sat at the bar & ordered drinks while waiting for our third friend to join us. We absolutely hating them. We just ordered margs but it was awful. We waiting for our friend just to see if what he ordered would be any better. No, nope not at all. I didn't even try the food sadly & we were starving. It was a Saturday night so we definitely wanted to have more drinks with dinner. After that first round we paid, left to go somewhere else. This place I gather is more for beer lovers. You order a bucket of beer (una cubeta), eat your food & chill. Which is fine, but not what we were looking to do. This would be a place for example my uncles would like for sure, very low key. Was wandering the Astoria streets to find a place to eat with my best fiend. Passed this place and saw a really good HH deal, $7 margaritas $8 flavored 11-7pm. Went in a we were both happily surprised to see a burrito/salad bowl served in a tortilla bowl on the menus we both got the burrito bowl mine with steak and hers with chicken. Everything was seasoned perfectly. The rice and beans although on the bottom of the bowl did not make it soggy. The tortilla bowl was light and airy not even greasy. It was quiet Tuesday not too many tables, 1 server who was also the bartender who made us the perfect margaritas that we ordered another round a few minutes past 7pm but he still gave us HH prices. Place is rather small and I can see it get busy you would have a hard time getting a table but definitely worth a try. Would come back for those coconut margaritas alone. read more

I recently had brunch at Chano's Cantina with a group of friends and had a positive experience overall. The space is very cute, and I liked the artwork. We came earlier than the typical Astoria brunch crowd since there was a toddler and infant in our group, so we had the place to ourselves. Service was very attentive and patient, and the food was good overall. Everyone seemed content with their meals. The only minor critique is that two people ordered the same dish but one was requested without beans. They reversed the two so the person who wanted the beans didn't get them and the person who didn't want them did get them. By the time they noticed, they had both taken several bites so they stuck with what they received, but I could sense that they were both a little disappointed. Overall it was a good experience though, and I would definitely return. read more

Solid food! I came to champs a few weeks ago to Che k out their brunch and it did not disappoint! Fajitas were very tasty and a huge portion! Rice and beans were just okay. Marg was tasty, not too sweet and had a nice kick. Great deal, add $25 for unlimited drinks for 2 hours, and way more to choose from than just your typical mimosas and bloody Mary's. It was pretty slow when we arrived but started to pick up, but we always had great service! Def worth checking out! Give them a try if you're looking for solid mexican food in the area. read more

I adore Chano's Cantina. I've driven 3 hours out of my way to get into Queens just to visit Chano's. My wife and I have tried nearly every item on the menu looking for a dish they didn't do well and they've knocked it out of the park with every item. The mofongo is out of this world, the birria tacos are the best in the entire Northeast, and the molcajete mixto is a must try. If you live in NYC and have not been to Chano's, you have done yourself a grievous disservice. 11/10 read more

Was it all just a dream? I came to Chano's in search of happy hour, and got that and so much more. Whatever photos you find online of the menu and the happy hour offerings are likely out of date. Check the website for the most current info. At this time, happy hour is from 11AM - 7PM, Monday through Friday. They really want you here! Give them what they want and they will return the kindness threefold! My tamarind margarita was delicious, perfect on a summer day when the humidity made it feel like a hundred degrees. Chano's offers margs frozen or on the rocks. Happy hour also sees a discounted price for some beers, wine, and well drinks. What really impressed me was the food. I came in with moderate expectations and was thoroughly blown away. The guacamole, made fresh to order, was incredible. The tacos al pastor were legit and flavorful. Importantly, the chicken enchiladas, topped with red and green sauces, stand up with the best in the city. Three for three on the food front and the beverages did not disappoint either. For an unassuming neighborhood Mexican spot, Chano's greatly impressed me. I had a wonderful experience and felt welcome and comfortable. I went in for a late lunch. Even it was happy hour, I didn't see a happy hour menu or offered one when I sat down. The ambience is nice and it can be a nice date spot. Service was great. The food came out pretty quickly. The rice and beans was tasty and the fish taco was pretty good. The shrimp in my shrimp taco was undercooked and I sent it back. The homemade hot sauce was the bomb. The waitress was very gracious and comped dessert because of the food snafu. I love tamarind juice and this was my first time having tamarind flavored lemonade. I came here with high hopes. Good vibe, solid menu, and was close by to my gig I was doing. I ordered a margarita, birria tacos, and chips and salsa. The margarita was meh. It didn't have a good tartness, just kind of watery with a bitter tequila taste and a hint of lime. The birria tacos were great, really yummy! Juicy, packed in with meat and cheese, and hot with a nice dipping broth. The chips were hot and tasty. The salsa....really made me mad... it was like a cup of water, just soaked the chip with bland tomato water. I asked the waitress for a different salsa and she brought me hot sauce. I can't get over how annoying and horrible it was. And the service, grant it, on a Tuesday at 230pm was atrocious. It took about 7 minutes to get any attention after being seated. And then I got my tacos and drink before the chips. I say maybe visit, because I might have got an inexperienced waitress on a time of day when they aren't really on it. I came here with friends the other night. It is one of their favorite places to go for drinks. They only have street parking here. It is right under the train. The staff is so friendly and welcoming. It is a bit dark inside, although we did go at night. It was very intimate. The music was blasting. They play all kinds of music. We came just for a margarita and some chips with salsa. Best salsa I've had in a long time. I loved it. And the margaritas weren't too strong and weren't too frozen where it would give you brain freeze. Came here the other day for brunch with one of my girlfriends. We were seated quickly and sat outside to enjoy the weather. It is under the train station which can be a little loud. We both ordered the cantina omelette which came with a green salad, home fries, toast and a spicy chorizo omelette. The omelet itself was absolutely delicious, the spicy chorizo was not too spicy and had a great flavor. The home fries were tasty as well as the salad. We had a couple of mimosas were also very good. The service was a little slow but very friendly. Next time I will probably sit by the bar to see how the environment is inside. read more

Authentic Mexican you can find anywhere, but there is something special here. I ordered their dish called the Alambre. Cooked with perfectly sautéed peppers and onions, bacon, and melted Oaxaca cheese. I ordered mine with chicken, which was the right move. First time ordering on July 10. Was a bit disappointed. We ordered the Broccoli burrito w chicken, grilled corn, ground beef tacos and chips and guacamole. Called for recommendations and the gentleman who answered was so kind and very sweet. Staff is clearly amazing. He said the broccoli burrito was a popular item. Didn't hate it, but wasn't in love either. I felt like it was a nice size, well balanced as far as ingredients and well priced. They offer a chicken or shrimp add-on. Would have been nice if steak was also an option. Maybe I would like the steak? Guac and chips were pretty good. Was most disappointed by the ground beef tacos. They are a rare menu item to find so I was happy to see them as an offering. These tacos were incredibly dry. It gave the impression that it isn't an item often ordered because it tasted like it was thrown together. The ground beef seemed like a hamburger patty that was overcooked and poorly chopped up and thrown into the shell. The meat had good flavor but SO DRY (see photos). The pico and lettuce did nothing to add moisture and there was no sour cream but I don't even think those things could save it. Perhaps they were having an off night. They offer complimentary hot sauces and there is one that is spicy and offers a tropical note like mango or pineapple and that was a pleasant surprise. We also did not receive the grilled corn, but instead received a chicken sandwich w fries. Perhaps they had no corn or it was a mistake. Nice gesture, but it would have been nice to see if we wanted another app instead. Would try them again, but the tacos need a lot of work. Seem to have their regular patrons/friends flooding their pages with great reviews (where no actual discussion of the food is occurring) after I have posted mine in an attempt to keep the avg. high. Friends always rave about how great it is. Had the chance to check it out for a friends birthday. Was absolutely in Mexican food heaven. We all were. We started with a couple of pitchers of classic Margaritas on the rocks and guacamole and chips for the table. Chips were served warm. Delicious. The guacamole was so fresh and flavorful. Most of our party enjoyed enchiladas. Another had molé chicken. Another, fajitas! Though I didn't personally try their dishes, they all assured me it was fantastic. I had the fiesta salad served in a fried tortilla bowl. It has veggies, corn ribs, grilled chicken. All the yummiest ingredients topped with a creamy balsamic. So unbelievably amazing for a salad. It wasn't even busy. She cleared away my friend's plate the second she put her fork down. Drinks: It was fine, nothing to write home about. Everything was good up til we got the check. The prices of the receipt didn't reflect the prices on the menu. So we asked, the manager came and said "the prices is with the credit card fee". It was never mentioned anywhere on the menu that there would be additional fees for credit card. We understand there are places that has the credit fees but the receipt layout was difficult to follow/understand. Also they automatically added a 20% gratuity to a party of 3. Don't think the service was that good for 20%. Bottom line, we would appreciate if the credit card fees was written or it was conveyed clearly to us to avoid confusion. read more

ZERO, ZERO, ZERO! Ordered a veggie burger with onion rings off a food app. To start, the name used on the app is "Chubby Burgers" which doesn't exist online. When my food order arrived almost 2 hours later and mushy, there was a flyer in the bag that reads "Chano's Cantina." Food was awful. I only ate it because I was famished. Most annoying part of my delivery experience was being sent a container of soggy, sauteed onion ringlets, when I selected onion rings. The two are NOT the same. They forgot the guac too. A solid authentic Mexican spot in Astoria ! My mom recommended me to try this place and I would highly recommend it to anyone. I came here on a Tuesday afternoon with a friend. We were seated right away and the service was great. The waitress was friendly as well. *Note* they have Taco Tuesday specials ! For our appetizer, we ordered the Guacamole Tradicional, which tasted very fresh ! You could really taste the lime in it and the ingredients inside were well-balanced. The chips that came with it were served warm and crispy. They were also very generous with the chip portion. For my main course, I ordered the Birria Tacos, which were super delicious and cooked perfectly ! Didn't have an overwhelming amount of salt. The taco shells were soft and I loved the cheese they added inside. The tacos were packed with flavor. I devoured all of them haha. The sauces that came with them had a spicy kick and weren't overly salty either. I would definitely order this again, along with the guacamole. Prices are fair overall and portions are great. Hubby and I came to this restaurant two days after Halloween. We had Camellia as our waitress. She's a great waitress. This restaurant is quite nice and spacious inside. The Halloween decoration was still up and running. We came here for lunch. We ordered chicken fajitas to share, then I had tacos (shrimp and fish) and Hubby had carnitas tacos. We loved the food. We both agreed my tacos were delicious! The sauce for the tacos was flavorful! The shrimp and fish were fresh and not frozen. The reason for these 4 stars is because the food was delicious, the service was great the portions were a good size and the drinks were good as well. I did take off one star only because the décor is lacking. It looks like a place that I would not choose to dine in but I decided to give it a chance because of the reviews about the great food. I got there with one friend and we ordered an appetiser of guacamole with chips and margaritas from the happy hour menu. The guacamole was fresh had great flavor the chips were freshly made they were hot and crispy and the guacamole was a very good portion considering so many other places give tiny portions of guacamole. When our other friend arrived we proceeded to order a few dishes to share because that's what we normally do when we go out as a group. We got steak fajitas, 3 shrimp tacos, and the order of 3 chicken flautas. The steak fajitas came with a side of yellow rice and black beans. I was a astounded by the portion size of the steak fajitas because usually when you order fajitas from anywhere you usually get a bunch of onions and peppers with a few sprinkles of whatever protein of your choice. This was not the case at this place there was an abundance of steak sizzling on the plate the green peppers and onions caramelized very nicely and it was very flavorful The steak was tender and not dry at all. I also liked that the beans were black beans instead of the refried beans one usually gets at Mexican restaurants. The flautas were hot, crisp and the chicken inside was a good texture, not overly dry or mushy like can be the case at other places. It came with a Chipotle aioli drizzled on top. The same for the shrimp tacos. The shrimp were cooked to perfection those too were also drizzled with the same aioli sauce and a really good cabbage slaw for crunch. My only complaint is that they don't offer salsa verde on the side and the tortillas did not v seem house made at all. You could tell that were taken out of the package and heated. Not a major big deal since everything else was so good. But that also contributes to my one less star. I'd go back! read more
