The best Roti Spot in Brooklyn, the closest to take out restaurant to Trinidad. I do not order from any place else in Brooklyn, I travel from Canarsie to get my Dhalpuri, Buss up, and doubles. I have tried many others in Bklyn, and their doubles are too thick (looks like fried bake) instead of the thin flat dough. I had a roti with chana (chickpeas) and hot pepper sauce and it was very good. The roti skin is much better than others I've had, with the perfect consistency (not too stiff and not too thin, just right) and the chickpeas were very flavorful and fresh. I also asked for some hot pepper sauce in my roti and boy, was that yummy! It was deliciously flavored with hot, fruity Scotch bonnets and added the PERFECT kick to my roti! There isn't much space to eat at De Hot Pot, just two to four tables with a couple of seats at each table. Though my companions and I ate there, most people just did takeout. It was an interesting mish mash of flavors.......I couldnt understand the ranting and raving of people until the last bite. I then felt a kick on my tongue and was sort of pleased. They constantly close early, I've attempted to get food here twice. Just don't go. It sucks when you're trying to support local businesses and they don't do much to adhere to basic protocols. Their hours on google and yelp differ, the first time they closed early I came in the middle of winter. I told myself, hm, maybe the weather is a deterrent for even basic business/patron decency. The second time they've closed early, it's now in the middle of summer! Myself and 2 others eagerly waiting for a roti were greeted with a chef who non apologetically said he's closed. I come here every now and then on the weekend to satisfy the Trini part of me with a doubles or aloo pie. In all honesty, I haven't found a place with Trinidadian cuisine that is consistent and draws me back to the restaurant. Maybe, I'm always comparing it to my moms food. Who knows. However this place is a hit or miss for me. My usual order is doubke or aloo pie with pepper and a touch of tamarind. Some days the doubles or aloo pie is on point and other days its just regular. So background I've been here like 10 times over the past two years. At first, it was great had no complaints. I've gotten food poisoning the last two times I've come here. The first time was a month ago when I ordered the Beef Roti which was a major mistake. The second time was yesterday when I decided to give it another chance since A & A's was closed. I ordered 6 doubles just channa. Immediately after my stomach started hurting and lasted the whole day and my stomach still hurts this morning. Amazing introduction to Trinidadian food! Came in after scouring Yelp to try doubles, which my friend had recommended. Was a bit overwhelmed as it wasn't immediately clear where you ordered (all the way in the back and work your way down towards the cashier, assembly-line style) and the wait was pretty long to order (around 15 minutes) but very happy that I did. The service was part of the experience. The doubles were rich, roti-like dough pan fried with the sweet Channa chickpeas inside. I could eat so many of them, I regretted getting only one to try. I saw people ordering huge bags to go - clearly they knew what's upm The chicken curry roti was a very substantial meal that I couldn't finish in one seating, only for $7. Pretty spicy, but in a flavorful, rather than vindictive way. Seating was pretty limited inside, just a couple tables, but you're only blocks away from Prospect Park which is a great place to sit on a bench and dig in. what a gem! i was visiting my sister in park slope and really wanted to get trinidadian food as it's not something you find often in chicago. love the cafeteria, no nonsense, just focus on the good food vibes of this place. i got a goat double and salted herring and bake and both were SO DELECTABLE. the double was great, the chickpeas well seasoned, the tamarind chutney providing a nice sweetness and tang, and the goat UBER tender and flavorful. i love braised meat, particularly goat and lamb, so i was so excited it was an option to get some in a double! the salted herring and bake was MASSIVE, probably twice the size of my palm and chuck full with salted herring mixed with veggies and chilis. it was very flavorful and satisfying, but i think if i had asked for a side of chutney or hot sauce, it wouldve been taken to the next level!!!! will definitely bring some hot sauce next time, and can't wait to come back :) read more

Doubles doubles doubles! Get them here! For those uninitiated with Caribbean food, a double is 2 (hence the name double) pieces of fried bread filled with a curried chickpea stew. A common street food in Trinidad and Tobago but also a staple in the shrinking quantities of Trini bakeries in Crown Heights and makes for a nice hand-held treat. Also known as "a post gym treat" in my world. What makes the doubles extra delicious at De Hot Pot is the absolute fluffiness of the fried bread. Now I'm no expert but I have eaten my share of doubles after living in Crown Heights for the last 5 years (and sadly watching the gentrification and exodus of the Caribbean restaurants) and in my opinion, DHP has the best bread. I also love the "everything sauce" which combines a pepper sauce and the tamarind sauce to give the double a sweet and spicy highlight that weaves in and out as you make your way through the yummy treat. At $1.50, order a few and stuff your face! Aside from the doubles, you can order rotis, platters, sides, or grab a few Trini snacks to go. I've never understood the draw of rotis with meats that contain bones (like trying to eat a burrito with bones, but I'm lazy) but they have delicious boneless chicken or veggie potatoes as options. At $9, it's like the size of a double-wide Chipotle burrito - a very good value. DHP is probably not a place you would want to have a sitdown meal since they have 3 small tables in a very small space but you can take your order to go and have a lovely picnic in Prospect Park just a short walk away. Also conveniently located next the the Prospect Park S, Q, and B trains should you need to travel. Service is sometimes slow and often crowded but worth it since they're making everything fresh rather than giving you old stuff that's been sitting around. I didn't want to post this review because this place is truly a local hidden gem. Don't let the exterior or interior of the restaurant fool you: this place is on point. The 1st time I came here, I ordered the roti. I've had both the shrimp and chicken rotis, filled with channa and potatoes. Flavor is key and they know how to get it right every time. They definitely fill up the roti and I can guarantee you will fall asleep real quick after eating a whole roti. Comfort food to say the least. The 2nd time I came here, I decided to try the doubles. I had no idea what to expect. I am pretty much addicted to doubles now. I sometimes order my doubles with shrimp, sometimes with chicken, but always with everything sauce. They make the doubles on the spot (I once waited 45 minutes for freshly made doubles right off the grill). The everything sauce will have you licking the paper wrap it comes in. The food is so good I hopped on a bus (20 min ride) after working overnight 6 extra hrs on a Monday and realized they were closed when I was a block away lol. WHERE'S MY DOUBLE?! We (my fiancee and I) just went to De Hot Pot for the first time with the thought of getting, it appears, the standard two person, low dollar yum fest: Roti (take your pick of types) and a Double. We were taking out. Time: Friday, 6:30pm. "I'll take a Goat Roti and a Double, Please," I said, feeling very confident and well read. "We don't have any goat. And we don't have doubles," the female employee said. "How about a patty?" "Nope." Well, shit. Back to plan....wait, what was our other plan? Where the f#*%k is the double? Panic--well, perhaps I'm exaggerating--but still. Whitey trying to make an informed decision about traditional Trinidadian street fair amidst a busy room of Caribbean countrymen can be daunting. Don't worry, it went fine. While the elusive double was laughing in the back, we made our awkward order. We ended up getting a Beef Roti and a Boneless Chicken Roti with mango (hot sauce on both, as suggested by fellow yelpers). Ended up being $16.50 (Mango was $1 extra, we were told). If we had just got the roti with a double, the meal would have been roughly $10. Amount: A roti is plenty of food, for one. A roti and a double would probably be enough for two. But, who knows? Not us. Taste: Very good. The curry mixed with the tender simmered meat, combined with the chick peas and roti skin (the breading) really hit the spot. I can't imagine the goat tasting much better than the beef, to be honest. The mango roti added a pleasant sweetness to the chicken dish, which was a nice contrast. The hot sauce was just right--not too much heat to scald your face (which I actually like, but I know most don't), yet enough to let you know its there. The only "meh" component, to me, was the roti skin itself. It just gets to be a little bit much after awhile and I found myself tearing off the skin and eating the inside with a fork. (Note: this minor meh-ness probably would have gone unnoticed had I eaten half a roti and half a double, as i had planned...but such is life). I later learned, from Wikipedia, that Doubles are "usually eaten for breakfast, and sometimes lunch." Perhaps it was our timing, then. Perhaps not. Still doesn't explain the lacking goat and patties at 6:30pm on a Friday. Seems like you'd be lucky to find a Diet Tab, if you went in there at 9. Located just 2 blocks away from Empire Boulevard, you cannot miss it. I took the B41, but technically you could take the Q train or 4 shuttle and walk from Prospect Park train station over here. In addition, I love this place for the flavorful food and fluffy roti bread. I travel 40 minutes out of my way for their rare roti prepared fresh with lentils in its interior...and not to mention, their rave reviews on Yelp which led me to this restaurant in the first place. Where I live in Brooklyn, there is no place around me to get doubles or roti or conch or curry goat...nope unless I want Jerk Chicken. For $5, you could get three orders of doubles and a mango carrot juice to go. We originally were going to walk to Prospect Park and eat it, but the delicious aroma of our food compelled us to stay and eat it while it was hot. We did not want our doubles to get soggy. But once you take a bite, you're just like, Oh yeah. That's it. One roti and one double is plenty of food for 2 people. And the best part is, you get so much bang for your buck here. There aren't many better food deals out there in NYC. Granted, there's only one table and a counter where you can eat, but still. I'm all about the food.
