Still my go to neighborhood joint. Great value for the money. My go tos are still the doubles ($2 for the plain extra if you want extra-- I go plain all the time) with pepper sauce and tamarind sauce combo. You can't go wrong. Rotis are still massive ($7-9). But I would be remiss if I didn't mention that the flavors are a little different. Not different bad. Just different. But the pepper sauce and tamarind seem not as sweet or spicy as they usually are. I still love this place, I do but I wonder if all the new gentrifiers are forcing the owners to water things down a bit. It's no easy feat finding good Trini roti in Brooklyn. At one point I even gave up and resorted to Indian and Ethiopian cuisine for my dough and spicy dish fix. And then De Hot Pot was placed on my radar. Actual thanks to Ajay from Yelp for letting me know about their goodness. Since then, I've gotten my doubles and roti cravings handled. Except on the occasional Monday when I forget they're closed. Their dhalpurie isn't my favourite. It's a tad heavier than I like, but the fillings make up for it. Really wonderful Caribbean food! We were walking near Prospect Park in Brooklyn after visiting their small zoo in search of a snack. While our eyes were in search of pizza - we stopped here instead and we're glad we did. It was really great roti and curried goat. Both were delicious and the portion was enough for my wife and I to share as a snack, although it could have been lunch just as well. It's a tiny little place with room for an in and out line, so it's tight, but people seems aware of giving room. The doubles $1.50 are a quick snack and consist of two fried dough patties with a mix of channa (chick peas) inside and your choice of three sauces. The roti $6-$8 are a steal. I've never had Trinidadian food before this, so can't comment on what most other reviewers say regarding its authenticity, but what I can say is that De Hot Pot is delicious and a great value. We went here after seeing all the great reviews and were not disappointed in the slightest. We got a wrapped goat roti, wrapped chicken roti, two doubles, a ginger beer, and some homemade ginger caramel candy things, all for under $25, and we took half of it home for another meal. The rotis were MASSIVE. Absolute units. Think small cantaloupe size. If you are very hungry, one roti is enough, trust me. The meat had bones in it for excellent flavor, but that decreases the ease of eating a little. They have a boneless chicken one if that's an issue for you. The goat was super tender, like a gamier brisket. The chicken was good, well cooked, but nothing extraordinary. Doubles were quite nice, and very inexpensive. At $1.50 each, I think you could probably call two of them a nice meal. Everything was fresh, hot, and delicious. Everything was priced super low, as this joint makes cash on volume. The food is what matters here! I've worked next to this place for 2 year and really never gave it any thought, it's a small order to go establishment with big flavor. They can get quite busy but with a straight forward menu the line is always moving. I had doubles with chana and tamarind sauce & chicken roti with spinach and tamarind sauce, both were perfection. The chana & chicken have the perfect amount of curry, roti is soft and flavorful, & the tamarind sauce is just the right amount of sweetness to compliment the savor dishes. I wandered in here for lunch one day not really knowing what to expect. I've never had food from Trinidad before. I went with a roti wrapped with potato and channa, drizzled with a little hot sauce. It was absolutely gigantic and heavy. I walked to eat in prospect park because there were only a few seats inside and it felt like i was carrying a mini dumbbell. I think the potato and channa mix was alright. I would have gone with just potato since the channa was a little too sweet and didn't go as well with the rest of the food for me. Just minutes from the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, this small place is quite popular. We tried the boneless chicken roti wrap. The wrap is huge so we shared it. They put curry potatoes, Chana and large hunks of chicken in the wrap. It was delicious! Only three tables so most patrons get their food to go. A local lady laughed at us for using plastic ware. The roti is meant to be picked up with your hands. Messy affair for sure. We enjoyed our snack. read more

I didn't realize that I hadn't reviewed this place yet? That's weird. Nevertheless...they definitely have the best doubles I've ever tasted in NYC. I'd make a cross borough trip for them alone any day (I no longer live in the neighborhood). But, don't stop at the doubles. The rôtis are pretty perfect as well. There's really good vegetarian options; do the potato and channa and then add pumpkin tamarind sauce and pepper...lit! They do chicken and boneless chicken. Boneless is more but worth it for the effort you'll save picking them out later. Service is "typical" but the more they see and remember you, the less nonchalantly they'll treat you. This place has other tasty offerings that I stray into trying every so often and I've honestly never been disappointed. There's also three tables to sit and people watch in a slightly cramped space. I unfortunately haven't had a good recent experience. Yesterday, August 18, 2019, I stopped with a friend to get some chicken roti. I used to come here all the time after a party or boatride. Yesterday the first time in a while. So the shop apparently didn't have curry chicken only the boneless. Nothing against boneless but I like traditional west indian roti. I was asked if I wanted the stew chicken in a roti instead. I opted for the boneless and I asked to put a couple of the stewed in since it was boned, just to satisfy at least that part of it- although it wasn't my preference. They were about to close and someone came from the kitchen to dispose of all the food so this food was going to waste anyway because the shop isn't open on Mondays. I was told "we don't mix." So firstly, I could not get what I initially wanted, I am paying the up fee for the deboned chicken because the shop didn't have any more regular curry chicken, and could not add only a couple pieces of the stewed which I was willing to pay for. To top it off, the food was going to waste which we saw ourselves that it was being discarded. I have never experienced this before. This is not how you treat your customers. This is why many of our black owned businesses can't survive. Of course the are is now more gentrified and many shops do get pushed up. You'd want to keep your patrons and build more customers as well. Word of mouth can kill a business. Sadly, I won't be back here as there are too many wonderful spots on Brooklyn. I should have just gone to trinciti in queens or A&A Bake Doubles and Roti the next day since it is closed on Sundays. For Triniciti, there is no running out of anything. One basically orders, and pay for whatever they want- you can mix and add as many garnishes or mix until that roti busts- you just pay the price. There was another patron, also a triple business owner, who faithfully buys roti skins for her functions. We chatted a bit outside the shop after the incident and she stated that she won't be back for a while. We were both sorely disappointed as we were both of Caribbean descent and we want to support those business as well. I don't know what happened along the way but I urge this business to review their customer service practices and appreciate your customer patronage. I did like the rotis at one point, and even had the doubles and this is why my cousins and friends would frequent this shop, but after yesterday, my disposition has changed. oh Rotis!!! I love chickpea and goat rotis! the breads are so well prepared, are so flavorful! I usually take it to go and pinic in the park, it can get messy and it's hard to eat without plates. You can taste the love and care in this food. Haven't tried their whole menu but the roti and doubles are as delicious as those I ate when I was lucky enough to travel to Trinidad years ago. On March 7th '21 I was highly disappointed. I got the worst service because I asked for no channa on my roti. The person behind the counter asked me many times why. I said please no channa and then I heard him suck his teeth. I ordered 5 doubles. When I get in the car and I begin eating the doubles. They had so much pepper sauce on them. I didn't ask for pepper sauce nor did he ask me if I wanted it. Some of the doubles were for my children. It had so much pepper sauce it was outrageous. Never again. read more

All the liquids from the channa, curry and shrimp busted through the roti. Love this Trini restaurant For a few years I stopped buying Roti and Doubles in NYC because they were just so disgusting! The doubles were the size of a burger and the curry had no flavor nor love , if you got a side of pumpkin it was like water . So I literally stop and just waited for my mom to make some and/or enjoy some in Trinidad BUT not De Hot Pot ; I have found my favorite Trini restaurant. The doubles are so yummy The Baras are light and crispy and the curry Channa is very tasty. ! The pumpkin and spinach are nice and fresh ( not wet and watery) The family that work there are so patience and friendly when you are placing your order . There are a few wonders in this world... and one of them is how could I have possibly lived in Brooklyn all this time with this place a (*cough*) mere 45 min stroll across the park from me, and not eaten at it until recently. All I have to say is that from now on, I'll be racking up the steps on my pedometer because this place is as proper for Trini food as they come. Let's start where every review of a good Trini restaurant should start... doubles. Don't know what they are? Well grab a friend, run over here and order "6 doubles" (or 8, or 10) with "everything sauce". Now I have to add that "everything sauce" isn't a Trini thing, but it's much better than trying to teach Americans to say "Slight peppa, mango chutney and kuchela". These doubles are as good as they come. Although on the small side, everything taste-wise about them is perfect. I'm now torn between this and A&A for best doubles in NYC. Next, the roti. I've both goat and chicken rotis and they are great! They come with some channa and curried potatoes in them as well, but they definitely don't skimp on the meat. One of these babies will fill you up, and at $8, that's a good deal. The dhalpuri is so good that I always get a couple extras to take home. And finally, the place itself. It is cute and small, with only a few tables in it, but it's primarily a "to go" outfit. The staff is really nice, and will explain the dishes to you if you need one. Everything I've gotten here feels cleaner and fresher than at most other Caribbean restaurants I've been to as well. There's always been a decent line every time I go here so I'm happy to see they do a good business. I just finished 2 doubles I ordered from this spot and I can honestly say it rivals A&A Doubles spot over on Nostrand Avenue off Fulton Street. I love it spicy so you know I added that pepper! It was the perfect combination of spicy & sweet that I love and expect from a good doubles. Do not...I repeat...DO NOT go to Ali's Roti Shop if you like a good double. This spot blows Ali's out of the water when it comes to doubles. I can't speak for Roti because I have not ordered that yet, but...I can't imagine it being any less terrific than the doubles I ordered. The gentleman behind the counter was pleasant and cordial and actually smiled and said, "Good Morning!" back to me when I said it to him! At first glance, you might mistake this place to serve hot pot ("De Hot Pot") yet it couldn't be farther from it. When walking into DHP, the line might be wrapping around the room with hungry locales who know the Trinidadian dishes and names. I so much knew one item from the menu. The standard fare is simple: Roti (wrapped) doubles, or stews (separate). All dishes come with channa (rich, savory chickpea stew) and potatoes(seasoned, slightly mashed) except for doubles(just channa). Def recommend ordering "doubles with everything" which is a regular double loaded up with smacktastic seasonings of taramind and fried shallots.
