I know that the Caribbean community has their pick of places for Indo-Caribbean cuisine AND I PROMISE you that you would NOT be disappointed in the doubles and customer service the newly opened Debe Kitchen on Nostrand Ave in Brooklyn. I drove 7 hours from Boston (typically a 3.75 hour ride) because I had a taste for doubles. Yes, foodies like me do crazy things for the love of food. This is the best doubles I've had in the US so far and I've eaten plenty. If you can't get to Debe Doubles Shed in South Trinidad, this is the next best thing. Yesterday, he this husband and wife team was living and working a dream. If that is not love, I don't know what is. I will definitely be back and I'm telling everybody. Thank you for putting up with my many phone calls inquiring about the status of doubles and closing. I should probably explain what doubles is for the non Caribbean readers. Doubles is a Trini street food made of curried chick peas (channa) and bara (a fluffy, fried bread with a yeast based dough), mainland Indians might liken it to chole bhature If you're like me and you won't have good doubles again unless you make it yourself or drive back to NYC, you get bara, channa and condiments packaged separately so that you could freeze it for later use. Oh, I forgot to mention that they make fresh kuchela. This review is based on doubles and customer service alone.

3.5 rounded up to 4 on this one for the good service . Their main dish is curry and I wasn't too impressed . To me , the curry is not flavorful in the chicken roti. The outer of the roti could be less chewy and thinner as well . I'd say the roti is closer to average . I also had a doubles. It's outer was a tad chewy just as the roti but was definitely a better dish . The true standouts from this restaurant are their sliced bread filled with fruits , the Gulub jumune , and their aloe pies( with chick peas ).

Debe Kitchen's food display and excellent customer service was something to experience.  As a first time customer, the food purchase was simple without too much expense consisting of one ( 1 ) shrimp doubles and a plain buss up shut.  Unfortunately, pholourie was sold out (remember to arrive before 4:00 PM).  Therefore, the next best food purchases were doubles and buss up shut. There were ample choices to select from to top the doubles, especially my favorite of kuchela to cover the channa and curry shrimp.  The fragrant smell of the curry enticed the belief of something different and good was contained between the two flour doubles.  The doubles tasted  /  smelled as good as it looked  (See Pictures). Because there was so much curry placed between the shrimp doubles, a piece of the buss up shut was wrapped around the doubles to capture all of the excess curry channa  /  shrimp.  None of Debe Kitchen's delicious curry was going to waste or left on the wax paper (every drop was accounted for).  As a "flour connoisseur", many different types of shrimp doubles and buss up shuts have tantalized my pallet throughout Brooklyn, Queens, and on occasion Manhattan.  However, Debe Kitchen's exceeded my minimal expectations with the abovementioned food selections  /  purchases.

String beans, pumpkin, curry potatoes with rice - A food tray containing beans with vegetables, curry potatoes, and a vegetable stew, typical of Caribbean cuisine.

Service is a bit slow but the food is spicy and well seasoned. I got pumpkin, string beans and curry potatoes over rice. Good food, a bit spicy for me that I had to take a break half way through. I would go again and try their meat items and roti.

The portions sizes were large - very generous with the filling. It's probably the best double I've ever had. The items were packed with flavor and spice. There was no chance this was being eaten by hand. Fork and knife were required, and even then I still walked away full with leftovers. Beyond the size, the food itself was really good. The duck was tender, flavorful, and well seasoned, and the roti held everything together without getting soggy. It felt hearty and comforting in the best way, like food meant to actually fill you up rather than look pretty. Service was straightforward and efficient. This is not a place you come to linger or be coddled, but that is part of the charm. You order, you get your food, and you move on happier and heavier than when you arrived. Please come and try this place out!

Now if you happen to be in the area--or simply feel like summoning it to your door via Uber…read moreEats--this is the spot to experience Trinidad's infamous Bake and Shark. Among the many soigné Trini eateries scattered across Queens, this one layers in just the right accoutrements to truly awaken your palate. The Bake and Shark itself is a revelation: flaky, golden, and impossibly crisp, yet light and ethereal with every bite. Sweet bursts of pineapple weave through the savory richness, striking a perfect balance that transports you straight to the shoreline--sun on your skin, salt in the air, and the rhythm of the Caribbean just beyond the waves. You officially have the Supreme touched.

This is a treat, to the mouth, digestive system, and the rest of the human condition. Located in Ozone Park, Queens, not terribly far from JFK airport, the Rockaways, and the Belt Parkway, this is the kind of food people line up for a 7 am to get ready for their day at the beach, or if you are brazen enough, a flight out of town. I got here about 10 am and there was already a solid line of customers ordering everything on the menu. The menu is entirely of Trinidadian cuisine. Trinidadian cuisine is a melting pot of other cuisines such as Caribbean, Chinese, South American, and a little bit of Middle Eastern. That is why you get the explosion of flavors in every bite, and why there is so much to pick from for anybody to enjoy. This is where a visit to Lefferts Gardens a few years back prepped me well, as I walked in not totally blind to this cuisine. I ordered a Curry Goat Roti (it was a toss up between that and chicken, but decided to take a chance), and their popular Bake and Shark. Now fair warning, the Bake and Shark is only offered on weekends, and they have a more systematic approach to how you order it, so keep that in mind when ordering it. Even with the line, it moves fast with quick assembly of the food. It was not all that cheap, but the portion size is generous to a fault. There are two or three tables inside, with bathroom, but it is highly recommended that you take this outside for you to eat someplace else. Twenty minutes later, I arrived home to eat my trove of food. Thinking I have to plan out something for later, I tried the Bake and Shark first. It is outstanding. Great flavor, great balance of flavors, and just terrific value. This is what people should be ordering before starting their day. Everything is done right on this. Yes, it does have some heat, but nothing a little ginger ale or juice to keep everything contained. It is also not as large as I expected, but definitely enough for somebody to call this their lunch. Of course, I had to go after the Roti. It is a huge hunk of food, like a Chipotle burrito on crack. The meat is delicious, the potatoes inside are well seasoned and delicious too. Unfortunately the whole thing came apart and was forced to eat this open faced. That is okay. I still love the amount of meat that is in this, the taste of the meat, and the overall quality of the Roti. Outstanding. I am not too sure the next time I will come here, but I am looking forward to another visit and getting another meal. It also helps the staff is real nice and nonjudgmental. I hate when I try ethnic foods and the staff judges me like I am a foreigner in a strange land. Teach me, not judge me. Be grateful, not spiteful. Highly recommended, take a chance. I hope that this is all enough words for you.

I was happy to see they still had $5 meal specials available ( its small but back then it was enough). Prices of regular dinners are still fair compared to competitors. The amount of food was justified for the price. Just wish a bit more salt was present. Our dinners had yellow rice, oven barbecue chicken, red beans, callaloo and macaroni pie . My mother in law said the salt levels were perfect for her high blood pressure dietary needs. So I guess I'll go get her food from there again. My double came out to $2.72 (w/tax) and when I went to eat it, I wasn't impressed. Visually, it's a lot smaller then that doubles that I get at other Trini restaurants. The dough was not chewy with a good pull and the chickpeas was still hard. It wasn't cooked enough and the flavor was lacking. As for the topping, it was weak. No graded cucumbers either. Since I was left feeling disappointed from my meal, I can't see myself coming back here to try their other dishes. It's too bad considering my doctor's office is close by.
