Regrettably, the DC Smiles office has been evasive and possibly misleading with regard to the financial implications of treatment. Consequently, I am out of pocket thousands of dollars more than they indicated I would be. The staff told me I could expect to be reimbursed by insurance up to about 75% the upfront cost that I had to lay out to begin treatment. After eight months, I have been reimbursed about 30%. The difference is thousands of dollars. I am fully aware that insurance carriers make their own reimbursement choices, and DC Smiles cannot decide how much ny carrier reimburses me. But they gave me an expectation that I could expect a certain reimbursement level, and the reality has been very different. The practice doesn't have a credible explanation for why their guidance was so far off the mark. A staff member told me in an email that "this has not been my experience with the claims in the past" but it strains credulity to think my timing was somehow unlucky, that I happened to be the first patient with bad luck and a bigger hole in his wallet than he expected. To be clear, I don't have some fly by night insurer that would reimburse less generously than a typical one; I have a generous plan from one of the big, mainstream insurers. For many months I gave the staff the benefit of the doubt as they assured me they would continue to engage my insurer to get reimbursement, with no results. Now, after eight months since my treatment started, and with the staff having ignored my last email request for more detail on what if anything may happen now, I feel the need to tell other prospective patients to be careful. I will update and upgrade this review if the practice ends up standing up to the expectations they set, and resolving the issue. I haven't commented at all on the treatment. The treatment I was pursuing did not work for me, but I am aware that much of Dr. Singer's work is on the cutting edge, unconventional (in a good way), and I own the risk I took in pursuing it. So, hard to say I love going to the Dentist, but these guys are great. I will say that they are expensive but they are well worth it. If you are getting a filling or a crown done, wouldn't you rather have it done by the best? It's going to be in your mouth for 25+ years, more of an investment than a cost. Dr. Singer is AMAZING! I've been struggling with symptoms of TMJ for years and after seeing countless dentists/chiropractors I finally decided to search for someone who could really help me understand my TMJ and how to eliminate the pain. I did extensive research and kept coming across Dr. Singer's website, which promoted me to schedule an appointment. The second I walked into his office, I felt very comfortable. He is not only extremely knowledgeable, but also very skilled. His "bedside manner" is perfect and his overall presence is warm and welcoming. He walked me through every step and explained what everything meant. He not only did a good job educating me about my diagnosis, but he also gave me a solid timeline for my healing. I really can't say enough about how much I enjoyed meeting Dr. Singer and his entire staff, especially LIz and Glenda. I got assaulted 3 years back and needed significant work done, including fixing a fracture jaw, replacing knocked out teeth with veneers, etc. They were so good that I have used them since for all my dentistry needs including wisdom teeth removal, cleanings, and whitening. I gave Dr. Singer two stars because of his sales tactics and inconvenient payment process. We'll get to that later. First, I'd like to commend the doctor on his outstanding set of marketing skills. DC Smiles has two upscale locations - one in D.C. and one in Old Town. I'm reviewing the Alexandria location - set in a nicely renovated, historic brick row house in the heart of a wealthy neighborhood. When you walk in, you're greeted by grand fireplace and "therapy dog" wagging its adorable tail. How could you not trust that? The staff are all extremely attractive (not by accident), friendly and clearly trained in customer service. There's a certain spa feel that Dr. Singer advertises. He also boasts a list of impressive clientele to include the Redskins cheerleaders. The guy clearly knows how to sell himself to those willing to finance his expensive locations and opulent lifestyle (cue the luxury vehicles in back and conversations about his McMansion). I do believe he does quality work, but the negatives outweigh the positive. That brings me to the negative. Maybe I'm a purist, but I would like to think that doctors go into business to improve lives. I didn't get that impression from Dr. Singer. I don't have a perfect smile but I have a nice one. My teeth are straight, white and I get compliments often. When I asked the doctor to replace the discolored bonding on the front of my tooth, he proposed that I get veneers on multiple teeth - even though he admitted I had nice teeth. The conversation continued over multiple visits. Each time, I expressed that I'm not comfortable with the idea of destroying my natural teeth to have them ground down to little stumps with ceramic glued on. At one point, he gave me an estimate for about $12,000. All I wanted was to replace the bonding and I would have been happy. Then, finally, he agreed to do the work. So I set up an appointment for the procedure and to have my teeth cleaned. After the cleaning, he acted like he forgot about the bonding and said that I would have to return. Finally... He got me in to do the work. At one point, Dr. Singer actually said he would be losing money on the procedure. Apparently, $800 for less than two hours of work isn't enough if you can con someone into a whole set of veneers. Advising patients that the correct procedure won't make them enough money is absurd. Pressuring them to get a vanity procedure that they don't need - for 10x more - that will destroy their natural teeth - is unethical. Don't let his perfect smile or smooth persona fool you. He's a businessman who will not hesitate to push the most profitable products: veneers, braces, and TMJ therapy. Also - expect to pay the full amount in cash upfront. You'll be reimbursed by your insurance company at their leisure. It's not the most customer-friendly policy, but it's DC Smiles'. I really wanted to like this place, and I gave it a chance for multiple years. But when you have to question whether or not your dentist has your best interests in mind, it's a good sign to move on. As a physician in solo practice, I am so aware of attention to detail and connections with patients. I also have severe dental phobia, and I can't say enough good things about how Dr. Singer helped me calm down when I had to have a root canal procedure. He asked me if I wanted to listen to music, white noise, whatever it took to relax me. And that worked. I actually wrote a note to him while he was doing the procedure to tell him that he has singlehandedly helped me to improve my phobia. He is very skilled, careful, thorough, with me as well as my 83 year old mother, who had a fall while in DC and lost several of her teeth. He has been patient, compassionate, and thorough. Because of my mother's experience, I travelled 4 hours to Virginia when I had tooth pain, because that is how much I trust him. I will happily travel there again if I need his care. I have never met a doctor and entire staff (hygienist/assistants/techs/front desk/billing department) who take the time to explain and educate their patients so thoroughly and keep our interests in mind. The staff and doctor here are incredible. I went in this week to get a wisdom tooth taken out. I thought that I was doing a great job of taking care of my teeth, but Dr. Singer found a cavity on one of my molars. He took his time to carefully explain how to properly brush, especially around the back area of my mouth. Plus he also pointed out how important it is to floss to prevent future cavities. As for the wisdom tooth extraction, it was fast and painless. You can definitely tell that he has a lot of experience and was very professional throughout the whole procedure.
