Dr Tappan is the kindest, the most attentive and a thorough practitioner. He goes above and beyond to help his patients. For instance, last month when I got my crown replaced and had pain, he not gave me meds to deal with it, he called me at night around 9 just to check on me. He knows I would reach out to them if needed but for him to call me just to check was next level patient care. He is always pleasant to talk to. He genuinely cares for his patients. The front office staff could be a hit or miss depending on the day who you are dealing with. The facility is clean, well maintained and I never had to wait for more than 10-15 mins. I have been a patient of Dr. Tappan for over three years. He has always provided exemplary service on all my dental procedures and there have been several. He was very sympathetic to my dental phobia and kept me calm with professionalism and humor. I know most practices say their "office strives to ensure a great patient experience" but unfortunately this hasn't been the case for me so far. You see I would fall under the new patient/1st time with Dr. Tappan category. I don't know if this was a factor but in my limited interaction with staff, questions went unanswered and their follow up was weak. I called multiple times with no direct contact with his team. Every time I was prompted to leave a voicemail, and someone would call me back. Someone initially called me back and I was able to schedule an appointment a month out. There was no email or text confirmations for appointments mentioned either. I was only told of a patient related cost involving X-rays during our brief conversation. I checked my coverage, called back, left an insurance related message and haven't heard from anyone since. I even tried to reach out through their website and the book now option. There isn't a direct email associated with his office on the site, so I left mine. Still nothing. As someone who has had less than stellar experiences with dentists in the past, finding Dr. Tappan was an absolute game-changer. From the moment I stepped into his office, I knew I was in good hands. They make coming to the dentist easy. The staff is nice and engaging and they explain everything! The space is clean and comfy. They offer blankets if you are cold, keep your lisps moisturized, and give you a hot towel to wipe off any splashing/residue from dental work. Other than a ridiculously long wait on my first visit, I have no complaints. I haven't even seen Dr. Tappan (yet) and he always stops by and speaks. It's the little things... My dental experience has been exceptional. I have gone a while without the proper care and getting back on track has been so tranquil. Not a word you would normally use for the dentist. I was so relaxed I fell asleep during my deep scale cleaning. I felt nothing during my fill in appointment. Dr. Tappan is the best at what he does. I truly had no pain and it was if time stood still, because from numbing to extraction it only took one hour. The front desk staff were friendly, knowledgeable and courteous and the techs were superb. I even received a call 24hrs later from Dr. to followup on my healing progress. I was referred by my then (now past tense) dentist to have my lower two wisdom teeth extracted by a specialist in Waldorf, Maryland. While explaining all possible worst case scenarios just short of giving birth itself, his actual level of confidence frightened me to the point of thinking with all of the pain he just described maybe there WOULD be a baby by the time the procedure was done. Needless to say, I had my reservations and immediately starting searching online for a "do it yourself kit." That is until, I informed a very dear friend of mine of this horrific experience. He referred me to the gentle expertise of Dr. Marcus Tappan, a true Angel on earth! His office has this really cool Feng Shui appeal complete with a water fall and music and a masseuse upon request! His office staff treats you like family with the utmost in pleasantries and professionalism. Who could as for more, you say? Well there is more! Dr. Tappan doesn't treat you as if you are just another patient on some sort of conveyer belt, rushing through his routines of the day. He actually listens and uses his own unique techniques and strategies to help bring about peace and calm making your experience with him successful and virtually pain free! Within six hours of my procedure, I actually felt well enough to eat a 16 ounce prime rib(well done) complete with a baked potato with sour cream, butter, chives and cheddar cheese, LOL! But of course I didn't and ok, maybe that was the pain meds talking, but I actually went to work the next day feeling absolutely, 100% NO PAIN! I have been a patient of Dr.Tappan and Associates for approximately 3 years now after recommendation from a family member. I currently commute a little over 1 1/2 hrs (depending on traffic), that should explain how outstanding and professional this practice is. I have visited several dentists within the Northern Virginia area and one in Washington, D.C. that were not the right fit for me ( or terrible "professional" service). I hated dentists ever since I was a kid with braces for 4 year. Which is probably why I waited till my tooth was dying and my gums infected before finally going to see Dr Tappan. I felt very reassured after he explained what was going on with my teeth and was able to remove the infected teeth during my first visit. I was surprised that he was able to remove two teeth and I experienced almost no pain during the procedure. I am not very responsive to Novocain and Dr Tappan listened to my concerns and was able to address this during the procedure. Also I never felt like I was being to talked down to by Dr Tappan as has been my experience with many dentists. I woke up in excruciating pain today. I'd ignored some pain for years but today I couldn't take it. I called several dental offices but none of the offices I called saw patients on Friday so you can imagine how relieved I was when TCD said they could see me today. I had dental work done by Dr. Tappan. I am in my late 30's, and have had a lot of dental work. This is the worst experience I have ever had in terms of the quality of the work performed as well as the customer service. I had to go back FOUR times to request adjustments and fixes. Pieces of fillings fell off of multiple fillings. The color matching of replacement fillings on my front teeth is horrible, you can pick them out from 20 feet away. He did not polish down the work, so I was left with teeth that feel rough and uneven. They "forgot" that they scheduled me for one appointment, so I took time off work, got to the office, had a card they had written the date and time of the appointment on, but was turned away. When I complained about a large pit in a filling upon returning for repairs, he acknowledged that he was totally aware of it, he just didn't think it would bother me. It was right on the back of a front tooth, where your tongue presses against it, and food got stuck in it. Services were of terrible quality and way over priced. They bill themselves as a "spa" dental clinic focusing on cosmetic dentistry. After he messed up one front canine tooth so badly (it had a 90% angle at the gumline, making a box shape. horrible) he decided to just redo it, then sent me away with a new filling that was 1/8in longer than any other front tooth and terribly colored. Totally lopsided! This week I had to go to another dentist and spend 2 hours having them polish and try to re-shape the work on the teeth Dr. Tappan worked on. So bad I'm filling a complaint with the ADA and the state of Maryland. read more

Absolutely Thee Gold Standard when it comes to professional dentistry. Hands down. I won't tell you his tricks for not even noticing the injections one needs for numbing the gums, which always freaked me out on some level, but when I write that it is TRULY PAINLESS ..... It Is!!!! Dr. Tappan is conservative in his approach, which is always appreciated as a patient, however, he won't hesitate to implement the necessary measures to do what is necessary for oral health. It's just reassuring that he proceeds with a conservative approach. He uses the latest technology that other dentists still haven't incorporated into their practice. If you want nitrous oxide ..... which is God's gift for upper level procedures .... he has it. I went through two-tanks for deep scale cleaning AND 3-cavities .... and felt nothing. Plus, his staff are top notch and his bedside manner is impeccable. He has an ease about him that is both comforting and reassuring. I wouldn't go to any other dentists. read more

I had a crown replaced there and knowing how terrified I am about anyone going near that tooth, much less doing anything with it, they calmed my nerves and kept me from hyperventilating by being reassuring. I can't say enough good things. A colleague referred me to Dr. Tappan after I had a horrible experience with a different dentist. I was essentially terrified of dentists at that point (literally shaking during routine exams). Dr. Tappan and his staff have gotten me back to not being afraid/traumatized about dentist appts! Staff is so friendly. Their focus is on your comfort from start to finish. They do things like tell you to raise your hand if something is uncomfortable, give you stress balls to squeeze, blankets if you're cold, play music, you name it. Whatever it takes to make the appt non-threatening. Dr. Tappan is such a friendly soul. He will talk you through any procedure, calls after any major work to check on you, and really seems to scare that his patients' have positive experiences and healthy teeth. The staff is equally nice. One woman held my hand during an appt for a crown (the whole time). They also never make you feel bad for being nervous. Other positives: I usually go in the mornings and there's never a long wait time for appts (very efficient). I believe he does evening appointments. Super nice and helpful w/ billing and insurance stuff. Metro-accessible Only con for me is that I live in Virginia so it's quite the trek. But obviously worth it because I've been doing it for 2 years. Sometimes I think it might be nice to be able to more easily stop in, but then I remember that horrible dentist experience I had before and stay put.
