Been wanting to check out this place because I've been hearing so many good things. It was difficult to find at first because we came in through the south side and had to walk through the building. Entering from the north corner is much easier. I was expecting the staff to not be friendly as I've seen that in multiple reviews and that lived up to the expectation. All the baristas here have an air of indifference and I respect that. Definitely won't get the overtly peppy service so if you're more introverted I think it actually is a nice respite from the fake friendliness as there's no unnecessary chit chat. It's a beautiful airy space with outlets near the tables and perfect for putting on headphones and working on your laptop. $8 for a coffee was steep but honestly it was a 10/10. I got a Warhol and looved the creaminess, the slight orange zest flavour and the bitterness of the coffee. I'm not sure if I would feel compelled to get this to go as part of the beauty of this coffee was how cute it looked, almost like a cocktail. located in the kimball art center! i really like the ambiance of the store and loved that u can explore the whole center! there's spots to sit and relax or study and it's really a nice minimalistic cafe for decor. got the totoro and howl's moving castle and both were quite tasty! however, i don't know how frequently i would come back as both drinks were $8 for a pretty small size. they also dont have much coffee flavor as they seem to be overpowered by the other flavors in each drink. you can definitely taste the coconut in both. i also dont really like how they are premade in a bottle they just pour into your cup. the service is really just okay. everything was standard, but then they just toss our lids on the counter. overall a solid spot for a chicago cafe to try! read more

Lot of unique drink options here! I tried the Totoro (seems to be one of the more popular drinks), but found it to be too sweet. For reference, I usually get boba with 25-30% sweet. If you would have told me a year ago that I would be spending nearly $10 for a coffee drink, I wouldn't have believed you. I live in Logan Square and there is an obnoxious amount of coffee shops in the area. Many of these coffee shops feature high quality coffee beans and employ talented baristas to create coffee drinks. I drink coffee at home most of the time, but I get excited anytime I know I will be near Dayglow. I've been here about 5 times over the last 6 months, and I am always impressed with the coffee drinks that I've ordered. I love drinks such as "Defund the Military" and "Howls Moving Castle". There isn't that much seating inside Dayglow. I see this place as being more ideal for to go coffee needs. read more

Love this minimalist coffee shop! It's located within a larger building with other stores/offices. There's lots of cool specialty drinks and your classics. Surprisingly, there aren't many places in Chicago where you can buy coffee beans. You can go to a local market and find a minimal selection or to a coffee shop to get their house brand, but you'd think, as popular as coffee is, there would be a store dedicated to selling a variety of coffees from around the world. There just isn't any such thing. So in my search to find a place to buy good coffee, I ran across a Reddit discussion that recommended Dayglow on Kimball. I looked it up online and found some photos and it honestly didn't look like much, just a big open café with about five tiny shelves on the wall with about a dozen different bags of coffee on them. But a dozen is better than nothing, so I decided I would check it out. Dayglow is in the middle of the Humboldt Park neighborhood, right next to the 606 bike trail which might explain how such a hipster place could even survive in that location. It's not a short walk from my house but it's not incredibly far either. It was a nice, sunny day and I decided to hoof it over there. So I get there and it's exactly like the photos, just a big open café and in a little area next to the checkout counter are five small shelves on the wall with some bags of coffee. I'm wearing a $400 Helly Hansen coat mind you. I say this just in case you think the way I get treated is because I look like some bum who isn't serious about buying coffee. I'm standing there for quite some time, reading the labels of the bags of coffee, while the guy behind the counter, who is maybe four feet from me, is completely ignoring me. Finally I clear my throat and say: "How much are these bags of coffee?" "Oh, all different prices," he says. "Which one are you interested in?" Well, I don't know which one I'm interested in, because they have no prices on them, so I say: "All of them really." "They range from $20 to $40," he shrugs indifferently. "So you don't have a list of prices?" I ask. "No," he says, "you'll just have to sort of ask me about them." Well that's dumb, I think, but okay, I'll go with the flow. "I guess I'll just pick some bags out then," I tell him and he is not interested in me at all. I spend twenty more minutes looking at the bags and he's right there, four feet from me, ignoring me. You would think, since he has nothing else to do, he might inquire about my tastes in coffee, perhaps help me pick out which ones are best suited for me. But no. I'm nothing to him. Finally I pick the three bags that look most interesting to me and I set them on the counter. He scans them. "This one is $33," he says. "And this one is $30. And this one is $25," he remarks as if surprised I found something under $30. Well, that's a lot of money for coffee, but I walked all the way down there and I don't want to waste the guy's time, so I take out my wallet, pull out a $100 bill and attempt to hand it to him. You can probably guess where this is going by now. "I don't accept cash," he tells me. "You're kidding, right?" I say. "I can't accept cash," he says quite nastily. Okay, so here we go. There is only one reason a place like that in a neighborhood like that refuses to accept cash, and that is to discriminate against people. Two blocks from this guy's establishment there is literally a homeless tent camp in the park. If any of those people happen to beg enough money to afford one of his cups of coffee, they can't have it, because he won't accept their cash. He only wants a certain clientele, with a certain melanin type who pays for things with phone apps and credit cards. I wonder if anyone who actually lives in Humboldt Park would pay for a cup of coffee with a credit card. You know who does? People from other neighborhoods, people who ride their bikes safely through my neighborhood on the elevated, isolated 606 bike trail without ever bothering to meet the people or discover the culture. If you added up my three bags of coffee it would have been $88; include the tax and that's nearly $100. I would have gladly given him a tip to round it off if he legitimately didn't have the change: but nope. He won't take my money under any circumstances. I'm not good enough for him. I'm not his type of customer. Don't have the proper lack of melanin or the proper phone app. He probably took one look at me and thought, this guy can't even climb the stairs to the 606 let alone ride a bike. Before I even make the five steps toward the exit door, he is already putting the bags of coffee back on the shelves. No apology for wasting my time. Nothing. Now he can go back to his life, the way it was before the old guy with his filthy Humboldt Park cash showed up. This is how gentrification begins folks. With the Dayglows of the world moving in. On the pricier end with the total being $21 for 3 items but I'm amazed by everything. The totoro was so good! The subtle sweetness, black colored hues from the charcoal, & it was so smooth that I forgot it was a coffee drink. Great flavor combos! The menu shows all the thoughtful combinations of flavor for subtle, ingredient rich, drink blends. The earl grey vegan roll was new & exciting since its one of my favorite teas. The location is great since its right off the 606 trail. A great place to go if I feel like treating myself. read more

Just fine. Not mindblowing enough to fit the "#2 in the country" they quote. From LA. Chicago has equal or better options. Vibe is on point, although I had thought the adjacent brewer Orkenoy (the most photogenic part) was the same group. Turns out to be separate ownership. Bit of sticker shock glancing at the menu and the pour-overs were $8 or $10. This out-prices the best local coffee in the city, including Intelligentsia, Passion House, Dark Matter, etc. There's some seating in the hallway, but not really a proper interior seating area. Next door Orkenoy apparently doesn't mind if you sit, however. Opted for their small filter coffee ($4), which was bright and palatable Costa Rican. Very nice. However it was below temp when served and cooled almost instantly. And they are only serving in landfill disposables, and do not offer a sustainable for-here dishes. read more

Dayglow has a whimsical feel that I to date have not seen in Chicago and honestly I feel like it has to do with its connection to its counterpart in LA with the same namesake. Howl's Moving Castle Drink: This drink was a coconutty, thicker coffee drink. It was very much a drink that didn't really taste like coffee and the coconut milk was a bit strong for my tastes, but if y'all like coconut this is the drink for you. Also the color of it (made through butterfly pea tea) was very unique! Overall wish they had the full range for their menu like their location in LA (which I hope happens as they become more situated) because I will gladly be back to try all their studio ghibli flavors If there is anything you should try, I would highly recommend their pastries! We got the: Milk Chocolate Eclair: This was an eclair with a craquelin-esque top and it was filled to the brim with chocolate cream. This was amazing I have nothing negative to say. Sweet Potato Danish : This danish was flakey, savory, and was just overall full of flavor. This last Sunday the 21st we stopped by and got there before 8am so had to wait after 805 when the lady inside opened the door. She did not seem too happy at first ( I understand it was early in the morning) I did not like that the menu is under a thick plastic that you can barely see in it since it shines right back. The lady then did answer the questions about the coffee and made some recommendations so we got two made and a pastry to go. Do not expect friendly service in any way. Civil/cordial at best, but these people are not there to go the extra mile. Or even the standard mile. The place looks like a fancy coffee laboratory more than a coffee shop, but the drinks are always good. Lots of seating and large tables for doing work. My main issue? The fact that they do not take cash. Way to exclude people who do not have access to credit or debit cards, such as many undocumented and impoverished people. Started coming here because it's close to my boyfriend's house and is open later than lots of other places. Have kept coming here because wtf, these folks are espresso shot wizards of some kind. Espresso can be so delicate, it's not rare to have a place serve up great espresso one day and then have it be underwhelming the next. But these guys nail it every time. The drinks are always fantastic. The aforementioned boyfriend lived in Melbourne AUS for a year and has become a proper coffee snob of the Melbourne ilk and calls this place Little Fitzroy bc of their excellent flat whites and their location in what's essentially a hipster business park. One last thing, the service has always been great. They've even started my order when they've seen me walking across the street. Chicago is full of great coffee places so it takes a lot to stand out.
