I'm updating my review because I have now been to the Morse's Mothership, and holy WOW. Aside from…read moretheir OG sauerkraut and pickles, this is not just a specialty deli and grocery but a veritable nirvana of European food products (mostly but not solely Northern). Condiments! Candy! Teas and coffees! Pastas and grains! Sauces and soups! Tubes of tasty stuff you can't pronounce! Jams and jellies! And so much more. Have a hankering for some German mustard strong enough to curl your nostrils? It's here. A fan of allllll the Scandinavian candies? They got you. Nostalgic for weird British shit like Marmite and Salad Cream and Brown Sauce (or how about curling up with some nice biscuits and a good strong cuppa)? Wanna try some pickled herring or real German sausages? Yeah baby, you're gonna be happy here. And that's before you even get to the deli--oh wait, there's a wine selection over in that corner, and here are some nice cutting boards and omg do I need a raclette grill? Oooh, nice olive oils too. Anyhow on to the deli . . . where not only is there the sauerkraut that made Morse's famous but an even bigger pickle selection than you can find elsewhere. I got some half-sours, which are bright and crisp and just feel like summer. Don't leave without idling around the deli counter to pick out some meats and cheeses (which you can sample): I got wonderful pastrami and a couple of different cheeses----the selection of Alpines in particular is top-notch. Super friendly staff who will absolutely help you find that one weird product you remember from a Eurail trip in the 80s, and also help you box up the tons of stuff you buy. (There's a reason they only have larger baskets up front, lol.) I also want to add that while I spent more than I'd planned (no complaints, only my lack of restraint), the prices here overall are really good, especially for specialty items like this! Will absolutely make the trip from Portland again (nice guy on staff told me Christmas is especially good). I'll be there!

Excellent sauerkraut yes, but so much more. The foodstuff they carry is a European…read moredream--everything from marzipan to nuts, and so much more. They have refrigerated food as well and it is worth spending an afternoon exploring. The cheeses and meats that they offer are exquisite and plentiful--anything from mortadella to aged cheddar, as well as pickles and, you guessed it, sauerkrauts of different kinds. You can spend several minutes sampling everything they offer. They are knowledgable and kind--and that's what I like about them.

Get outta town!!! OMG we are headed to Camden & Bar Harbor. Our 1st stop was Red's Eats in…read moreWiscasset to have their famous lobster roll. Bummer they don't open until May 6, two days from now. Continuing our drive north we came across the famous Moody's Diner that's known for their pies & down home cooking. They cook their own turkey so a turkey club is a must. For me it was either a 1/2 # lobster roll or a Percy burger with Swiss, onion & mushrooms. The burger was the juiciest burger I've ever had & I had a hard time getting it around my mouth. I managed to eat 3/4 of it & took the rest back to our B&B for later. We also had a side of awesome onion rings. If you've never been go eat & enjoy Maine cooking & hospitality. A factoid: They serve over 55,000 pieces of pie a year. Off to Whitehall B&B to rest up, go sightseeing & have an extraordinary dinner the night before our 37th anniversary. I forgot look at the size of this oatmeal raisin cookie we bought. Biggest cookie I've ever seen. BTW: Kris ordered a slice of strawberry rhubarb pie, she didn't like it. I passed on dessert.

I'm one for trying the local institutions. There is a reason why they began and continue. Moodys in…read moreits day was likely a welcome respite from an arduous journey up what eventually became the "1" into the northern wilds of upstate Maine. My experience at Moodys was that quintessential diner experience, the older staff slightly surly (which is fine!) and the younger staff enthusiastic and kind. Times have become slightly challenging, given all of the winning we have experience of late and so my assumption is in order to have competitive and palatable pricing for locals and travelers, management has had to adjust to the times. One of us had pancakes with blueberries and two of us plain pancakes tasted to me to be products of a mix or missing that richness I so enjoy in diner fare. I had an egg, bacon, and cheese muffin - very fair priced mind you - oiled muffin and slice of "cheese". This is a wonderful place to experience a nice mix of local and traveling folk.
