Wow, this place was strange! I went in on a Saturday morning and there wasn't another customer in sight (while the oil change place next door was swamped - probably a sign). The woman who assisted me was quite unfriendly and brusque and in general just seemed like an unhappy, miserable human being. The building itself was pretty rundown and smelled like a urinal cake. I live a few blocks away and own three cars. This is where I get them smogged. I've had no issues with this place. I've only had one old pickup that didn't pass smog, that was no biggie. I replaced one vacuum hose myself and got it rechecked OK the next day. Really there is not much to review about a smog inspection station except the service. Service is friendly. Only cons: it is overpriced compared to other places ($75 w/o coupon), but for the no-nonsense speed and ease of getting in and getting out, I find it's worth it. I had such a bad experience here today. They were a little busy (maybe 3 customers ahead of me) and I waited to speak to the woman at the front desk. She was very short with me and asked me to show her which car was mine. We walked outside together and I told her I had a competitor coupon - they clearly state that they honor Davis area smog coupons - she said "No, that's not our coupon" then literally walked away from me to someone else's car while I was mid-sentence and said "I'll talk to you about it later." I wasn't sure if she was planning to come back for my keys, so I just left. There are so many places in Davis and Woodland where I can get my car smogged that I just didn't feel like waiting around for someone to be rude to me. read more

They failed to file my paperwork with the DMV, so after weeks of not hearing anything, and not getting my plates in the mail, I finally had to go back to the DMV and show them the receipt. The DMV said they never received the paperwork or anything. It feels mean to leave a bad review, but if this saves someone an unnecessary trip to the DMV, then it's worth it. read more

I received a Davis Smog $20 discount coupon in the mail for a smog test. I took their coupon to their shop for the smog test. The person behind the counter said the coupon wasn't any good. He said it was too old. I pointed out to him there wasn't any expiration date on the coupon. He said the coupon was too old and it wasn't any good for vehicles made before 1996. I pointed out that the coupon didn't have any conditions about the vehicle's age. Again he said the coupon wasn't any good and it was against their policy to take old coupons. After several minutes of trying to get him to honor their coupon I gave up, in part because his english wasn't any good and because of his apathetic attitude. This was a perfect example of false advertising. If you need a smog test, go elsewhere. read more

I wish zero stars was an option. Brought my car in a month ago. It did not pass. Fine. However the owner pushed me to end my call (business) so he could get to lunch. Yesterday (Sunday) brought the car back for the free retest. Tech told me they don't do retests on Sunday. The place was empty. Whatever. I started to leave. He changed his mind and decided to "do me a favor" and do it. Then told me I'd have to pay full price for a retest. Why? Because they have a 30 day deadline (per the small stamp on the 2nd page of the invoice). I was at Day 31. He did me "another favor" and only charged me 1/2 price. I politely objected and he got quite "animated". There are other places in town that are cheaper and (on the phone) a lot nicer. read more

Avoid taking your car here for a smog check at all costs. I had such an awful experience that it prompted me to write my first Yelp review. Even though my car passed the functional smog test, the technician, Hugo, would not approve the visual inspection because my catalytic converter was replaced in 2009. The serial numbers on the converter are difficult to read or not visible, so every technician I've seen since 2009 has indicated that the converter numbers are "N/A". This terminology has been satisfactory to the state of California for the past FOUR smog tests I've passed since 2009. One satisfactory test was even performed at Davis Smog a couple of years ago! I explained this situation to Hugo and the front desk clerk, indicating that the state of California has never had a problem with this situation before. I gave documentation for each smog test that I've passed since 2009. I haven't made any changes to my catalytic converter, thus this should not be an issue. My defense fell on dead ears. I just paid $67 for a service that never should have been performed were these folks honest enough to take a quick look at my car, voice the concern to me over the serial number issue, and not run the entire smog check that is null and void anyway. There was no budging on their part when asked to issue a refund. I will now have to pay ANOTHER ~$70 to a new smog check station that understands that the state of California has no problem with my catalytic converter numbers not being indicated on the form. The technician tried to say that it was necessary to the state to have these numbers indicated, but many past years of my experience (and physical documentation) argue differently. This is especially inane when considering that my vehicle passed all other aspects of the smog test. Don't go to Davis Smog unless you are completely prepared to waste hours of your day and be out a lot of money. I can't begin to tell you how much this experience ruined my day. read more

This was the second time that I have come to Davis Smog and I have to say that I am always happy with their service. As soon as I pulled up, which was at 4:58pm (Yes right before they closed), the assistant came right out and I asked if there was still time and she said of course. This was great since I have been at other places were they would have turned me away. There was even a car ahead of me so this was greatly appreciated. In the lobby they have free wifi, so it would be good to bring your laptop if you want to make use of 25 minutes. My car passed the smog test and we were out the door by 5:20. So overall, the prices and services are above average. Will definitely come back next time I need a smog. read more

Great service here, was greeted almost immediately, and was told the wait was 35 minutes. I only waited maybe 25 minutes, and I was in and out. Make sure you drive all the way in the parking to find this place, it's in the very back of the plaza next to Speedee's. The desk woman was very cheerful and talkative, and they also have a nice little TV & free wifi. I drive through and have no idea where to park. suddenly this asian woman comes out to greet me with a clipboard with information to fill out. I then leave me keys in ignition enter the waiting room and enjoy free wifi. Bill comes out to 79.45 including certificate of +8.25 already included in the 79, and -20 dollar coupon included as well.. A full size suv like an escalade cost 89 to smog the two of them (asian man and woman) were a friendly bunch and informed me of the prices for a large car like mine and eventually we agreed to lower the price by 10 dollars upon my request. Pleasant experience. They even had a very nice free Hot, middle, Cold water machine with plenty of mini cups. read more

I would not recommend going to get your smog checked here for the simple fact that they don't have good customer service. I got my smog checked not to long ago and when I picked up my car it was idling rough and about a minute before I got home the car died at a stop sign and the check engine light came on. I immediately called to tell them something was clearly wrong after they performed their smog check but nobody picked up the phone. I left a message asking that they call me back and to this day they have not called me back. As it turns out, they didn't put the oil cap on correctly (cross thread) which was causing the issue (maybe a vacuum leak???). So after I got home and saw the oil cap I fixed it and the issue was resolved. If they had any customer service they would have at least called me back. read more

Inexplicably rude! I went here a couple of years ago and did not have a great experience, but thought it might have been just a bad day for them. Went back today and had an even worse experience. I was ignored when I drove up even though there were no other customers; when I went in and asked for a smog check the technician grabbed my papers with a frown and stomped away. Wow. I was so freaked out that I changed my mind. He was completely fine with that and continued stalking in the other direction. I was polite, dressed normally, had no body odor, and my sedan is in good shape...just sayin. guy was super friendly and is from what I believe the cheapest (with the coupon that you print off their site) smog test place in davis that is open on Saturdays. what was nice was that I failed the first time but they have a policy in that if you fail once you can get one free retest later. He recommended that I drive the car around on the highway a little right beforehand and leave the car running right up to the test, and sure enough, my car passed. also the two car washing tokens were a nice touch. read more

Avoid this place - nasty and dishonest management. I came in on a Sunday almost a week ago to smog my 1993 Toyota 4Runner. The place was empty save one mechanic, but he was friendly and he tested my truck for the normal price (minus $20 for a coupon I had; total price was $46.75 after the discount). It failed, but that wasn't their fault - the problem was a bad oxygen sensor, which I replaced on my own. So far, so good. I came in today (a Saturday) for my free retest (part of the original deal). It was busier, and I was number 4 in line. The same mechanic was running the place, he entered my paperwork, and then I sat down to wait my turn in the waiting room. About 40 minutes later, another employee showed up (an older Asian gentleman who was identified as the mechanic's "boss"). Within a few minutes, he walked out to the garage, I heard him get angry about something, and then he came into the waiting room to tell me that the mechanic had screwed up the initial order, the initial price I paid didn't apply to my vehicle, and that they couldn't give me a free retest. I said that it was too late to be bringing this up. I had already done the first test, and paid for it, all with the understanding that I would be getting a free restest (not to mention a physical contract indicating this). The manager then said that for trucks like mine they retest at half price, not for free (see below). I protested that that's not what I was told and that I needed him to follow through with the agreement to retest my vehicle. After a somewhat heated argument (he had lost his temper before our conversation even began), he said he would give me a full refund for my initial test, but that he would not honor Davis Smog's contract to retest my car. He briefly reconsidered when I indicated that I would follow up on this, but abruptly changed his mind, gave me a refund, and told me to leave. A refund is better than none, but that's not what I signed a contract for in the first place, and not what I wasted an hour of my Saturday to get. I still need to smog my car. When arguing that I should have been charged a higher initial price, and given an offer of a 1/2 price retest, the manager referenced a stamp on the contract I was given last week. Verbatim, it reads: "1 Free Retest Next 45 Days for small cars, minivans, & light trucks other vehicles retest at 1/2 price Must bring original paper." I argued that a 4Runner is a light truck (it is), and he disagreed. When I returned home, I looked this up, and dude is wrong. From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_truck, accessed 3 May 2014): "Federal regulations define a light-duty truck to be any motor vehicle having a gross vehicle weight rating (curb weight plus payload) of no more than 8,500 pounds (3,855.5 kg)..... ...Light trucks includes vans, pickups, and sport utility vehicles." My 4Runner certainly qualifies for the "1 Free Retest Next 45 Days for small cars, minivans, & light trucks" offered by Davis Smog, and this was denied to me for no valid reason. Even if they had screwed things up in their initial agreement with me, that would have been their fault, and they still would be obliged to honor that agreement. Overall, I had a miserable experience with a nasty and dishonest manager at Davis Smog (although no complaints about the friendly mechanic). You can avoid this by NOT GOING to Davis Smog. read more

I'd give them no stars if possible. The owner/ tech was very rude. When I arrived, he tried to tell me that because my car was dirty that it would not pass smog. Really!? After arguing with him that the dirt on the car had no connection to the car's emissions control system, he told me to leave and never come back. I have no problem with that. Poor customer service! - I will not be back to check my car at Davis Smog. I forgot to turn in "$20 OFF" coupon when I paid for the service and when I came back 5 min later, the attendant asked me to step outside of the office (where 2 other customers have been waiting) and told me quietly (so that the other customers would not hear it) that I should have given her the coupon before paying for the service. Why offer coupons then in a first place if you are not flexible enough to honor them 5 min later? I should have checked the other reviews on Yelp before going taking my car to Davis Smog. I've always had great experience here in the past (fast and friendly), but when I was there a couple of weeks ago they broke the handle off the inside of my driver's door! They didn't even say anything about it, so I didn't notice it until I got home and couldn't get out of my car. read more
