I was really surprised to stumble upon the 4 buildings that make up Davis Ace Hardware. After having a rough day, I need to start the weekend off with some new houseplants. Go ahead, laugh. Most girls would run out and get some retail therapy with something cute, sexy, or luxurious but I'm in Davis, so I settled for houseplants. My apartment is in a heavily shaded complex with a carport in front of it. I love the trees that make the complex feel like you're not in Davis, but they don't allow very much sunlight to stream in through the windows. Of the new plants I bought upon moving in, most are making their way toward the compost pile, unable to survive in the low light. Davis Ace had quite the selection of shade loving ferns and peace lily type plants that will hopefully fare better here. The enormous housewares building offered up essentials like silicon spoonulas, pot holders, pyrex baking dishes, and surprises like cherry pitters and sandwich shaped tupperware containers. It was the sort of homewares and garden store browsing that I needed to buoy my spirits. I also perused the dog and cat toys and pondered if a gold fish would make my room feel warmer. Very friendly employees at Davis Ace too, which adds to its small town, anti-Bed Bath & Beyond/Home Depot charm. Davis Ace also offers a one year guarantee on all plants as long as you still have the plant and receipt. It's nice that they stand behind their products. read more

QUAINT HARDWARE STORE WITH HELPFUL PEOPLE. I USED TO SELL THEM MY GUINEA PIGS. (Say what?) I used to live on J & 4th Street, so just a few blocks away from here. Whenever I walked past the window front, I'd stop to look at the little furry creatures. Lucky for me, at one point in time, I was breeding guinea pigs like a madwoman to supplement my college education. Ace bought them from me for either $8 or $12 and of course sold them for like $40 but hey, someone's gotta supply the city with those little piggys. Their 20 lb. guinea pig pellet bags were also pretty cheap here too, like $15, but the price has probably gone up since when I was there years ago. Everyone I asked for help there was pretty helpful and looked like they at least enjoyed being there. read more

My husband went in 10 minutes before closing to get a replacement light bulb for our porch light. The staff member told him he would have to come back tomorrow because he didn't have enough time to go get it from the back room since the store was closing. wtf? I have over 10 years of customer service experience and I personally would have gotten them for a customer. It is called going above and beyond. read more

I've been coming here for years, and they've always had exactly what I was looking for which saves me a trip to the Home Depot in Woodland. service was good though staff is usually busy with other customers answering questions parking is hell during lunch hours but good at any other time if you are building a bong, they will know. lol read more

I have shopped here since the early 70's when it was Davis Hardware. The layout hasn't changed much since then. The central building is general hardware and lumber, to the north along 4th St. is garden and pet, to the east and across the RR tracks the rockyard and door shop. To the south on 3rd St is the housewares building. I shop here a lot. My personal faves: -The fastener aisle. Just about every kind of fastener you could want. -Gardening. A quick stop for all basic needs. Great sprinkler system stuff. -Rockyard. You want decomposed granite or few bags of concrete? You got it. -Electrical. Big light bulb and electrical parts selection. Between Davis Ace Hardware and Hibbert Lumber I rarely have a need to drive to Home Depot in Woodland. The difference in prices won't cover the cost in fuel. read more

This is a interesting set up Davis Ace really comprises three separate buildings one for hard ware, one for landscaping and one for home goods. The stores have that home town mom and pop feel but they still carry a very wide variety of products with reasonable pricing. Heck they even have a pet section with tropical fish and live rabbits! While not the biggest or cheapest store around I believe stores like these are worth paying a little bit extra for :) read more

Came here to make a key copy, staff were friendly. Making the key was super quick and easy. In and out of this place within 3 minutes. BEWARE: Davis Ace Hardware and Davis Ace Housewares are separate, make sure you know which one you're headed to. My GPS lead me to park in Davis Ace Housewares. Being the clutz that I am and in a rush, I walked into Davis Ace Housewares and went up to the cashier to ask where the key copy station was. I'm writing to commend Efrain, who helped me at Ace the other day. I needed a fairly complicated set of vanity light bulbs and the purchase turned out to be quite time-consuming. Efrain was patient and calm and answered my numerous questions with good humor. Best of all, it turns out that the bulbs, rather for on the "blue" spectrum," work out well. had about 300 dollars worth of gardening goods and waited at register for about 10 minutes. my cart was too bulky to move inside and at least 5 ace employees walked by while I waited and another guy chatted up a friend for at least 20 minutes I was shopping there. the 6th employee walked by and said 'the register is closed' pointing to a sign on next cash register. the clerk then proceeded to smirk and act like a toddler, checking out the person in front of me at a snails pace. So I left and spent the 300 bucks at the RED BARN where I was greeted and offered help, and felt good not DROPPING CASH AT a Republican supporting store. read more

I really like our local ace in our town and usually buy all organic plants here. I was so heppy to see today when coming in that they have a new huge selection of fruit trees and ran to get couple. When i got closer i see that all and saying very big on the lable are GMO..... Very upset to find this in Davis in our little home town store. read more

I came into this Ace yesterday looking for a specialty light bulb that I thought might be difficult to find. Brittaney began helping me, and unfortunately, I was right. After determining exactly which bulb I was looking for and searching several locations in the store, Brittaney told me that they did not carry the bulb in store. However, she did not stop there. She began searching other retailers in the area for me to see if any of them carried it and whether or not they had it in stock. She definitely went above and beyond to try to help me find this elusive bulb. Outstanding customer service. I only gave four stars because they didn't have the bulb I needed, but Brittaney gets a five for customer service. I really appreciated the help. read more

This isn't the type of Ace I remember growing up in the Bay Area. This place has all sorts of stuff. They have a housewares department has everything from storage, to patio furniture, cleaning supplies, kitchen items and more. Across the street in their hardware section they've got all sorts of tools and supplies you need to fix up your house. The garden and nursery section has lots to offer as well. I do't know much about the rockyard except that's where I fill up my propane tank for my bbq grill. The staff has always been friendly and helpful. I love that they have a rewards program since I'm always looking to save money. The prices here are comparable with some things at the same or slightly higher prices. But for Davis residents, it's best to go here instead of going out of your way and wasting money on gas to go to Home Depot. read more

Ace has most things I need and the service is not bad. Pricing could be lower, but at the same time I get that they need to cover the overhead and pay their employees. Some items are top notch quality, while others are the Ace brand and that in my eyes tends to make them less reliable. The other day I wanted to purchase a digging fork and their most expensive one was an Ace fork for $35.99. Had they had a sturdier fork for a bit more, I would have purchased it, but instead I ended up turning to trusty Amazon Prime and getting exactly what I needed for a lower price. read more

ALWAYS experienced friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable staff! Seriously, what are they feeding them in the break room? These people are friendly, but NOT in the over-friendly fake, I'm-in-a -rush and-I-hate-my-job type kinda way In the garden/hardware section there's always someone around when I have a question (because I always do at these type of stores) and are well stocked on a lot of things. When I was an undergrad I used to get my keys copied here. And when I put some holes in the wall of my apartment and I needed a quick patch, I got advice and supplies here. They even sold me thinner and smaller nails for my next living quarters. Now that I have pets, I visit the Pet section more often. They carry a lot of obscure brands that you don't normally see at a petsmart or petco and even some of the common brand pet items are actually cheaper here. My only gripe is that it's so DOG-centric. There's 2 rows of dog stuff and only 1 small section for cats! As for housewares, they carry a lot of baking items that I only thought you could find online. read more

I come here because they really do seem to have things you might need for home-improvement and pets. If they don't, they'll suggest somewhere else in town that has the item. I really do like their customer service - because the store is so huge and sells so many different things, having knowledgeable employees direct you to the correct aisle or recommend fixes for problems makes shopping more fun. Making extra keys here are convenient, and they offer an interesting array of materials and colors for the keys. Great selection of pet food, especially for cats (grain-free foods), but the prices are sometimes higher than Petco's. Fortunately, they have random promotions and a frequent buyers program, which can be useful for households with multiple cats or dogs. read more

A great selection, extremely helpful staff, really good set up with individual stores for each department (but all within a block of each other). If you are buying plant starters because it is gardening season don't get distracted by the pretty ones right up front, they have a much larger (and cheaper) selection in the back of the outdoor area. read more

This is the kind of hardward store I grew up with, in fact, this is one my parents took me to as a child. I love this Ace because it has everything. Not just hardware, paint, nursery items and the like, but they have the most amazing home store. Our two favorite patio chairs came from this store, I wish they still had them because I would buy more! I love to go here whenever I am in Davis and poke around to see what cool kitchen things I can find, they always have interesting gadgets that you don't fine elsewhere. Last time I was there I picked up some beautiful Christmas ornaments 75% off in June, love it! The staff is friendly and helpful, parking can sometimes be a challenge, because it tends to be busy. read more

Davis Hardware is s hard place to shop, they have too many buildings spread out over a large area. Every time I go in I have a hard time. Finding what I need and I have a ace card which some times get honored and sometimes doesn't. Being handicapped it's not for everyone as I'm not in a wheelchair so I don't get the help that I need. I've actually been given snide remarks like, how about not shopping here, by the working staff? Im helping a friend out doing some work in Davis, so I don't want to have to drive out of town to get the stuff I need. I mean get that the store is spread over four buildings but that's kind of what makes it hard for me. read more

By far the biggest Ace Hardware I have ever been in. It seems to encompass several buildings across two blocks. If you need it they typically have it. If they don't have it right now - they can order it. They have a wide variety of hardware, tools, parts, plumbing, heating, and brick a brack. They are the hometown Hardware store in Davis. I have always had great service here. Parking can sometimes be a pain. This is true of almost any location in Davis though. The whole town is a parking nightmare. I was UC Davis staff and still had to pay to park at my job. And my job took me to this Ace several times. And they always helped me in some way - even if it was just to give project advice and to suggest what part I might need. Kudos to Davis ACE read more

Employee turned his back on me when I asked for help, and seemed to delight in doing so in order to entertain the customer who had just criticized my accidentally driving into the wrong entrance. Clearly, misogyny is alive and well at Davis Ace. It's 12:51 if management would like to get an idea of who it is that treated me this way. Just thought I would put my two cents in about the Davis Ace Hardware store from the viewpoint of someone who has shopped here for over thirty years. :)~ If you want something - they probably have it! They have a great selection of everything. Ok, like some say, their prices are higher than big box stores. This is a big gripe I hear sometimes but is shopping here really costing you more? Take a water heater I bought. It cost me about $2.50 more than buying it at Homer Depot BUT my time driving to and from Woodland i worth more than $2.50 not to mention it would cost more than $2.50 in gas to make the drive. I like being able to get what I need right away and get things fixed. They also have sales that meet or beat other stores so keep an eye out for those. What I truly love about Davis Ace is their customer service. 99.9% of the staff are friendly and helpful. Even the store manager is down to earth and friendly. I called her one time about an issue and she thanked me and fixed things the next day! Ever had trouble finding help at a big box store? You know someone works there but where are they? They can't all be on break at the same time can they? And should you ever have to return anything, their return policies are more than fair. Check them out! read more

I once bought three comet goldfish from here, 15 cents each and maybe just over 1/2 inch long. Very tiny and perhaps meant as feeder fish. They went on to live for over 4 years and grew considerably!!! It was nice having them live for so long and it made my parents appreciate aquariums a little more. Besides that, I shop at Ace in Davis for indoor plants, potting soil and pots, and screws, nails, etc. It's a great place and everyone is very friendly. I'm sure their housewares section (it's a completely different building actually) is equally nice, although my main interests are garden and pet section. Love this place! read more

I came here the other day to check out their supply of plants (especially cacti and succulents) and I was not disappointed. I found this place particularly interesting because of all the little random oddities that you can also buy at this "hardware" store. I saw from the reviews here that they even used to sell fish! I thought the customer service was okay and the price wasn't too bad. I want to explore other sources for plants but I would definitely return here in the future. read more

We needed some washers and didn't want to make the trek to Woodland for Home Depot. We hoped Ace would have some and they sure did! And then some! They have an entire aisle of loose washers and nuts and bolts and the like in every size imaginable. We needed a sink basket and, yup, they have those, too; a few options, in fact.
