I sometimes forget this place is even in Davis. I have been programmed to go to Home Depot when there are home repairs to be done. But one thing separates Ace from HD-- there are employees in Ace that know stuff about the stuff they sell. You can go to the garden and there will be a person that can tell you what plants do well, where, and what time of year. You can find a person that knows plumbing fixtures and can find the part you need. I've been to the rock yard and those guys know how much you need and what is best for you. They have your typical hardware store and garden department...but also have a pet store, rock yard and housewares department. I'm always impressed with the service and knowledge of the majority of ACE employees whom are experts in the items and techniques one needs to complete/start a project. These people have bragging rights...hands down! One time my toilet was leaking water in between the rim and the floor. I went to ACE to see if anyone can help me find a solution. A very nice elderly gentlemen (forgive me I forgot your name but not face :-/) told me that I might want to look into changing the " wax ring" in which I can hire a handyman to check/replace it for half the price of a plumber. Long and behold that was my toilet's problem...a worn out rubber ring. Got that changed and haven't slip-n-slide on the bathroom floor yet. Another time I bought a christmas item and needed to return it. My return did not pass the store's policy but a blonde hair middle aged employee, whom works at the housewares department, told me it is not exchangable/returnable because it is after Xmas and the store does not accept Xmas at the end of the season. Firstly, I had my receipt and the item is defective in that the novelty item's head did not match the picture on the outer box. She then proceeds to call her manager on the store's landline and walks away from me so that I can hear her speaking about my return but also that I cannot hear the response (if any) from her supervisor. I really doubt she talked to the manager because when she hung up the phone, she told me, "sorry but my boss said that we made a sign that said "ALL SALES FINAL on Xmas items. So unfortunately ....blah blah blah." I said ok but I didn't believe her that she "actually" spoke to her manager and why would I be back if I bought this and I didn't see this sign. It didn't make sense and it seemed she was falsifying too much information in order to make the situation in her favor. So then the next morning, Wednesday, I walk into the houseware department and found Dan, the employee who rung me up for this novelty item, and got my refund. He asked no questions and appologized for the mishap of the defective item. I was happy and relieved that employees like Dan represent what ACE hardware is all about: quality and customer service. I will be back to shop at ACE Davis but I'm staying away from that blonde-hair middle aged woman employee who just wasn't seasoned enough to work in retail. Me and my mom just went here today looking for fish. They have a very nice healthy fish setup with VERY good prices. We ended up getting way more fish than planned. They even had Cherry Shrimp, which are hard to find. Also live fish food, again at a very good price. They also have THE nicest garden center around. read more

I've bought bulk materials like sand & gravel when we have a project in Davis. I own a small Landscape business & if I need a yard or two of something to finish a job I come here. The problem is if we need 1 yard of something we have to order 1.5 yds. We buy gravel & sand all over sac & we know what a yard is. Their reasoning is the city of Davis told set their bucket size for gravel. I guess this works for the average homeowner but def not for professionals. read more

This Ace has helped me start up my succulent garden. The succulents in their outdoor garden area are very affordable, ranging from $3-$6 mostly, and come in a wide variety of species and sizes. Harassed by cashier tonight. Before I bought these items that I returned tonight, I was told that if it doesn't fit then I have 90 days to return it. I was told to save the receipt and packaging. Tonight, when I went to return these items, a hammer, a wrench and a screwdriver, I was given a very hard time about the return. I was accused of using the items and then returning them afterwards. THE ONLY ITEM that was even used once was the hammar and it looked scratched up because it was already scratched when I bought it. Both Davis Ace stores are great. I almost always find what I'm looking for, but if not, the staff is helpful and generally knows what they're talking about. I'm especially impressed by the small Aggie Ace. The people who work there are enthusiastic about helping customers and they have selected a very good variety of products so that it's rarely necessary to drive downtown where parking is unpredictable at best. read more

I have gotten great service in the hardware and outdoor buildings. Does someone else manage the housewares building? Several times I have asked about something and gotten a cold "I don't know." I was once told they did not carry something, which surprised me b/c they seem to carry everything, even old-time washboards! I went and found the items and got no appolgy. You have to shop there b/c they will have what you need and more, but I now dread going there. And the males in the back, they seem to have other things on their minds. I have bought items at this store dozens of times over two years -- lumber, electrical parts, plumbing parts, seeds, shelving, pet food, paint, sprinklers, and more. There are indeed several physically separate parts of the operation (housewares, hardware, garden, pets, and bulk yard) but they all work well together. That variety covers most needs for a DIY homeowner; only occasionally do I need to try other stores or online sources. I have never encountered the rudeness reported by other reviewers; the service has always been at least satisfactory and sometimes exceptionally good. Parking is not strictly private but is almost always available. The discounts for regular customers are helpful. For all my projects this Ace store is my place to start. read more

So I normally don't post very many reviews especially not for non-food locations. However, the service I received at this Ace Hardware in Davis, particularly in the lumber section compelled me to post a review. I needed a small hole drilled in a little action figure for my closing argument for the Mock Trial @ UC Davis team. I went to the lumber section, rang the bell, and talked to the man who's name I regretfully forgot. After some small talk, and discussion of what I needed done, he returned the action figure to me with the perfect sized and perfectly drilled hole, even fed my fish wire through it to make sure it was of good quality, and handed me the guy. I pulled out my wallet to pay him for his services, especially since I knew such a small action figure is dangerous and difficult to drill a hole through. He did not accept my money and I thanked him thoroughly. Great service and extremely friendly staff. I also experience a very friendly worker at the Davis Ace Houseware. Will be coming back to both locations for all of my future needs. read more

There are a few employees that are more knowledgeable than others (okay, a lot more knowledgeable) but if someone doesn't know the answer, they will try to find it out for you. I used to be a faithful shopper at Davis Ace Hardware...now I will drive out of town rather than spend another dime in that store. What turned me around....very, very poor customer service. I made what I consider a major purchase....including accessories and supplies ....over $1000 for a Traeger Pellet BBQ Grill. I made the purchase on Friday February 7, 2014. They offered free set-up and delivery. Sure, this coming Monday or Tuesday will be fine...call me. By Sunday night having heard nothing from them I went to the store. I figured that since I had not heard from them by now that Monday was out. Spoke with the manager on duty. Oh we have this set up for Monday morning at 9:30. Would have been nice if someone would have called me to confirm that time...didn't happen. We had to reschedule for Tuesday. The Monday delivery came with a very specific time...9:30. But for Tuesday...sorry best we can do is a 4 hour window....thanks Cable Company. It was blamed on the weekend fill-in employee. My first use of the grill was a disaster. It kept losing power. Giggled the power cord it would come back on and then off. As the unit was not working properly right out of the box it needed to be returned / replaced. I call the manufacturer the next day. I did not feel that something brand new and broken should be a warranty item. The service representative agreed with me. They stated that I should contact Ace and they (Traeger) would work with them to resolve the matter. I contacted Davis Ace. The run-around started. Despite the receipt listing a 90 day Return / Refund / Exchange policy....we can't do anything until we talk to the vendor. Where is that written? No offer to exchange...nothing. I brought something that didn't work...not Ace's problem...it's my problem...let the buyer beware! Considering that the Ace representative was going to have to tell my story to someone else, who in return would probably put their twist on the story and tell it to someone else, who would in turn put their twist on my story before they called Traeger who would in turn put their twist on my story before they told it to someone else who could make a decision I prepared a statement addressed to both Ace and Traeger. I hand delivered the statement to Ace. A promise was made that I would be called by Davis Ace the next day...this would be taken care of. The next morning I faxed my statement to Traeger. Later that day I received a call from Traeger....he thought he was calling Ace. He agreed the unit was defective and should be replaced by Ace. It should be handled by Ace he said....Ace should be standing behind whatever they sell if it doesn't work straight out of the box. Traeger offer me a deal if I would just fix it myself with replacement parts supplied by them. With Ace's track record so far (poor customer service) I decided to take Traeger up on their offer rather than wait weeks with a $1000 lemon sitting in my garage. Here is my final beef....Do you think anyone from Ace troubled themselves with a follow up phone call to confirm the solution? Nope! Do you think anyone from Ace troubled themselves with a follow up phone call to make sure a customer who had made a major purchase that had experienced problems was happy? Nope! Let me tell you what Davis Ace has brought for themselves....a $1000 plus of bad public relations. I started here on YELP...I will share my story with anyone who will listen. Last night a friend and I were downtown Davis...he want to buy a BBQ...by the time I was done he snapped a photo of what he wanted and is off to the other Ace in town or the internet.
