I have a oil painting that I purchased three years ago and it had issues that I did not see fully when I bought it. The paint has been chipping off a bit since then, and I finally bit the bullet to find someone to repair it. I found David here on Yelp. I liked that others wrote reviews on his repair work. He is a master at his craft, so don't expect it to be done in a hurry as quality work takes time. There were chips in the upper middle of the painting and tiny chips missing in quite a bit of other spots all over the entire piece. He was able to reduce a small fraction of the warping (on the left side) and he conditioned it and repaired the chips in the sky and other smaller paint chipped areas. I am very satisfied with the end result of the repair he made on this 1950's original oil painting of Laguna Beach, CA. Now I can proudly hang it on my wall! Among the pieces of art I treasured from my late mother's home were four mid-century pieces in chartreuse ceramics. One pair was from Gonder of a Hawaiian or Tropical woman, and the other was a pair of tall Royal Haeger vases with a bamboo design. I accidentally destroyed them all when a dresser toppled over because I had too many drawers open at the same time, and I hadn't secured it to the wall like I should have. (Lesson learned) I was so distraught, I couldn't even speak. I carefully put all the pieces in a shoe box while I tried in vain to find identical pieces for purchase. After some years of yearning, I was referred to David's Brushes "N" Chisels. What a fun and funky shop they have; I was instantly in awe. He warned me that he takes his time on pieces to make sure they're done well, and I figured waiting on David makes more sense than keeping a box of shards. It was perhaps a year when I received a call and was asked if I still wanted him to proceed. Of course! A month or so later, the results took my breath away. I sat on the floor and kept repeating "Oh, my gosh! Oh, my gosh!" I couldn't believe the accuracy of the reconstruction, the color, the finish -- everything. Some months later, a Gonder woman became available on eBay and I bought it, just to compare the original against what David did. I've since written on the bottom of that one "bought on eBay" because I couldn't tell them apart. And the price against the hours that David and his wife worked on my pieces was extremely reasonable. read more

I had a bronze horse statue that was accidentally damaged by cleaning solutions. I thought the horse was headed for the trash bin but first checked online for art restoration in the Bay Area. I called 3-4 places and decided to go with David because he was close by and had experience working on bronze. 8 weeks later, I'm ecstatic about how it turned out. Pictures speak for themselves. 5 stars are not enough for David's extraordinary work. Nobody gave us a hope that this frame can be repaired. Other people wanted from us thousands of dollars for a new custom frame. I left a damaged antique ceramic Persian tile for repair/restoration. I also provided a photo of the tile in its original condition (first photo), before the damage was incurred. After three months I picked up the tile with the restoration (third photo). Overall the restoration was okay, but there are a couple of points I'd like to make. First, upon comparing the restoration with the original design changes were made that were significant. Upon comparing the restoration with the original, it became apparent that some of the original pattern/glaze was removed (second photo) and replaced with painted reconstructions. I don't know why some of the original pattern was removed. I wish I was notified that this was going to be done. Further, additional alternations were made that deviated from the original, with the addition of some leaves in the upper left section. Apparently the photo that I provided was not used as a guide for the restoration. It would have been nice if the restoration was closer to the original. Really, all that needed to be done was reconstructing one flower and some background. I don't understand why this was not done. read more

I left my dad's mug with them in June and was promised they'd rush the job. I called in August to check on the progress. Their reaction proved to me that they hadn't even started. Three days later they called and said I could pick up the mug but should wait a couple of days to let it dry, so I picked it up 4 days later. The mug was a disaster! Glue globs, paint brush marks, air bubbles and the crack wasn't covered. When confronted, David refused to apologize and made a million excuses why it wasn't his fault. All I wanted was an apology and an explanation, but what I got was a snarky smile and "we can make it better". This all cost me $80. I took my business elsewhere. Next time I'll buy superglue -I could have done a better job!! read more

I had purchased a Sideshow Collectibles Doctor Doom Legendary scale statue. The statue was damaged in transit to me. The left leg was broken into 3 pieces when it's supposed to be one piece. I thought I was out of luck on this statue. I took a change and googled "statue repair". David's brushes and chisels popped up. Took a chance and called him up. He told me to bring it in and he would be able to fix it. After 5 weeks, I got my statue back in like new condition. It is amazing what David can do! If you have anything from statues to vases, from canvas to glass, he will fix, fabricate, patch and make it like it once was and in some cases - better! Ask to see his before and after book. I didn't write a review about my experience with David restoring an unsigned American Impressionist landscape a few years ago. It was an amazing painting but had some small tears and other damage. He restored it to its original condition. I am in the process of purchasing a large mid-nineteenth century landscape by a British artist that is in the original frame which needs repair and cleaning. I plan to take it to David as soon as I pick it up. I will post another review then with before and after pictures. He is a real expert at what he does and charges a reasonable price. We had two projects done by David. One was a large pencil sketch that had been stored in a garage and was covered with dark blotches, presumably mold or something like that. It was also mounted on a thick hemasote board. He was able to bleach the drawing back to nearly new. We also had a round convex mirror in an elaborate wood and plaster frame. Part of the frame that was shaped like a ribbon had gotten broken. He was able to repair, paint, and apply gold leaf to make the frame better than before it broke. Beautiful work. David was able to restore perfectly a hand carved Italian statue of the Virgin Mary that I donated to a church as a memorial to my father. I couldn't believe that it was impossible to tell that a large paint chip had been scraped off the front of the gown. I cherish this statue and am so thrilled that it remains a beautiful piece of art. David worked quickly and the fee was absolutely reasonable. My rich sister gave me a bronze that had fallen off the wall receiving several scratches across the face of a bronze art piece. She gave me the piece and said if you want to fix it....go for it. I found David on line and read several review. He held up to his reputation doing wonderful repair work that made the scratches disappear. The piece required a new frame. I brought a statue of Saint Barbara that is at least sixty years old, it was very deteriorated and some pieces were missing. He restored it completely while still preserving the original style. I was impressed with the detail and perfection of the two new hands that David made, he also restored the crown and chalice. David is a gifted man, and he seems to put his soul on the work he does. His wife Regina is a delight and their studio is located in a very accessible part of Santa Clara and it's easy to find parking. That's right, after discovering David's on yelp, my mom and I drove to Santa Clara from Fremont in hopes that he could fix our (borrowed) statue. I am happy to say that David was very accommodating with time. He used a careful technique to make my statue look as original as possible. He provided great customer service-- I kinda had to call him to remind him that I was on a tight schedule, but the five stars are because he did an excellent job overall.
