I've never had surgery before, and never planned on having it. I found the very idea of surgery terrifying! However as luck would have it, it became necessary to remove half of my thyriod, and I was referred to Dr. Weintritt. As others have stated, the pre-op appointments went great and hastle-free. He was very good about addressing my (many) questions and concerns. Surgery day was last Tuesday, and I was up and around (with no need for opioids) the next day! By Friday, I was forgetting that I actually had a surgical wound. It's been a week now and I feel like it never even happend! I'm shocked at how efficient and pain-free this procedure was! His care and his team made me feel that I was safe in his hands and I trusted completely from the first appointment. He performed the surgery so perfect that I did not need any pain medication after that, no even Tylenol, the next day I was walking and feeling better. I came to know Dr. David Weintritt of the National Breast Center just over a year ago; when I discovered a lump on my breast. I had a biopsy which confirmed it was breast cancer. As you can imagine the news of my breast cancer was terrifying, unexpected and it took me and my family by complete surprise. I was in great health, I eat healthy, exercise and there was no history of cancer in my family. My husband and I were making plans to start a new chapter in our lives, retiring soon, traveling and enjoying life. This unwanted news dramatically changed our lives. We wanted answers and we were looking for support. Thankfully, we found the answers, support and care from Dr. Weintritt and the professional medical staff at the National Breast Center. I knew that I came to the right place and found the right doctor from my first encounter with Dr. Weintritt. I was so impressed with the high standard of care and his professionalism. He was able to explain the situation to me. He had a caring demeanor and patience to guide us through the difficult choices regarding the different treatment options for my breast cancer. Dr. Wientritt and the Medical staff created a warm and caring environment which had a lasting and positive impact on my recovery and battle with cancer. I highly recommend Dr Weintritt to anyone who has found a lump, is dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis or who has a genetic mutation linked to breast cancer. I've been a patient now for 7 years and he's guided me through two breast cancer diagnosis. He's done both a lumpectomy and a bilateral mastectomy for me. Both results were top notch. With my lumpectomy, the scar was completely unnoticeable after a year and healed beautifully. He also helped reduce the size of a port scar I had as well. He is not only a caring physician, but he explains things in detail and always wants to ensure you have all of the information and data to make an informed decision about surgery. He also referred me to a top notch oncologist and plastic surgeon as well. He is well connected in the breast cancer community and is working to ensure better technology, surgical methods, etc for his patients. Dr Weintritt was an excellent physician in every way when i was his patient several months ago, despite the fact that as a long time nurse I am not an ideal patient. His surgical care was excellent, his explanations clear and his education thorough yet simple. Today as I looked up his information for a friend to whom I was recommending him, I saw an unhappy message from a patient whose surgery started late creating significant discomfort on her part and anger because someone told her that her doctor was eating lunch while she was starving pre-op. I am so sorry she had a difficult scheduling experience, and as a nurse i know there are countless reasons for surgeries to get behind but patient safety is not served by rushing or shortcutting, including performing surgery for hours without a break or food. Dr. W. is a very nice person but his staff is rude and his surgeries ALWAYS RUN LATE. Very late. My most recent surgery ran just shy of 4 hours late and I was left laying on a gurney in a holding area facing a blank wall (less than 6' from my face) all that time. Eventuallly I complained of a headache from dehydration and every nurse I complained to said "you can't have anything." When that headache finally got the best of me and I exploded I got something but it should not have gone that far. Oh and while I was suffering from dehydration, Dr. W. was spotted eating his lunch in the hospital cafeteria. Where's the compassion? The care? The patient's bill of rights? read more

I had found a lump in my left breast last year and my obgyn told me not to worry because it was probably a bruise. I felt uneasy so after some browsing around i scheduled an appointment with Dr. Weintritt and he did a biopsy during my appointment and found out it was breast cancer. At the time I was uninsured and in between jobs but Dr. Weintritt was truly amazing and reassured me that everything would be okay. His staff was awesome as well and helped me with financial questions and were very efficient with scheduling and lab results. I just finished my last round of chemo and will be doing surgery with Dr. Weintritt and Dr. Venturi (plastic surgeon) and couldn't feel more at ease in their hands. I have referred several people to Dr. Weintritt because he is an intelligent doctor who is also incredibly kind. I had a surgery with Dr. Weintritt scheduled at 10:30am at mount Vernon hospital. As instructed I hadn't eaten or drank anything since the night before. They had me in a room waiting for all of the morning. After such a long wait and excruciating headache from hunger I told the nurse I couldn't wait anymore and was walking out if he didn't show up soon. They finally got him to appear at around 2pm. He showed up and spoke to me for about 5 minutes and then left again for another hour! It took me complaining again to finally get me moved so the surgery could begin. That day was an absolute nightmare and I have to say that after my post op I hope to not deal with him ever again. I am not sure what happened because he had so many positive reviews everywhere else. Yelp is usually very accurate but in this case it was not. I also know that complications can occur and cause things to be delayed but 5 hours?! That is just very inconsiderate and irresponsible. I am giving him two stars only because he was very nice in my pre-op and post-op appointments and had no complications with the surgery. I'd also like to add that the nurses at Inova Mount Vernon were so nice and tried to do anything they could to make me comfortable while I was waiting for 5 hours. I feel very bad that they had to deal with how irate I was. I know it was not their fault. read more

I am so lucky to have found Dr. Weintritt. I was new to Alexandria, at 65, the same year my mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer, and ultimately died. I had worried most of my life about getting breast cancer, and sure enough at age 65, I too was given the horrible news. I left Kaiser Insurance, so as not to be limited to their surgeons, I wanted the best surgeon, with new techniques, no corners being cut, etc. My Financial advisor recommended Dr. Weintritt, and spoke about all the new things being done today--that having breast cancer was not the death sentence it used to be, etc. I saw Dr. Weintritt, and was very impressed with his patience, bedside manner, the time he takes to inform and educate, and put your mind at ease. I first had a lumpectomy, then it became clear I needed a mastectomy, but Dr. Weintritt saved the breast skin/envelope and nipple, and the plastic surgeon he works with took it from there with an implant. I never need any radiation or chemotherapy, THAN GOD. After everything I scheduled a Mediterranean cruise, and two and half years later I am still doing fine. Dr. Weintritt is the best as far as I am concerned. The fiasco which occurred with his practice in Lorton, made me so nervous, because he did not, and I later understood could not contractually contact any of his patients, so I had to search and call everybody to find out that he was still in practice out of the Mount Vernon hospital office.so, now he is once again my breast cancer doctor for my yearly exams, mammograms etc. On top of being a great doctor, he is one good looking man, makes my appointments so more enjoyable. read more

Dr David Weintritt is the best. Wish he could be my PCP. He is extremely knowledgeable, professional, kind and caring. I went in for my first procedure which Dr Weintritt took great care to make painless, stress-free with minimal scarring. He also took extra time to address an unexpected plugged milk duct that just developed prior to my visit, which was not the reason for my appointment but was very painful. Dr Weintritt immediately looked at the area with ultrasound, discussing the anatomy, causes and ways to treat and eased my fears that there was no scarring or other reason to threaten continued nursing of my 8 mo. especially since this is my second bout in the same area. He is extremely knowledgeable and supportive of lactation. He couldn't be a nicer, more caring, knowledgeable doctor and all around wonderful person. read more

I am a women's health nurse practitioner, working in a large N. VA practice. I was already recommending Dr. Weintritt to my patients, who needed a consultation for a breast mass or wanted to take about their family history of breast cancer. Then I got diagnosed with breast cancer myself. It is rare to find a doctor with the combination of excellence and compassion. Now Dr. Weintritt even sponsors a monthly breast cancer support group that he has often attended himself. He is a special doctor with a great support staff. I did experience a long wait on the day of my first surgery. He should try to improve on that part of his care. For me that was annoying, just not as important as knowing I was getting a great surgeon, backed by the best knowledge. He truly cares about his patients. read more

Dr. Weintritt has always been the most professional, knowledgeable, leading edge breast health and cancer doctor in the area. He receives the highest accolades and from his peers and his patients. His former office in Lorton (recently changed and taken over by Sentara -- DO NOT GO THERE) was state of the art. His staff have always been professional, courteous, helpful, comforting and reassuring. He has a passion for early detection and treatment and does an amazing job at monitoring high risk circumstances. He has worked hard to build a terrific practice. Apparently, he was recently forced out of the practice he worked so hard to build by Sentara. What everyone needs to know who is looking for him is that he IS IN BUSINESS at Mt. Vernon Hospital. Run, don't walk to get your appointments if you have been under his care. He is in business no matter what you are told otherwise. The new company that took over for him does not own his patients. We all still have a right to select the provider for our care. Particularly for something as important as this specialty. You will not find a better surgeon or doctor with amazing bedside manner and gentle care. He can perform biopsies and surgery right or left handed and has the gentlest surgical hand I have ever experienced. Aside from that, he is honest and kind and has a good heart and passion. When he formed National Breast Center, he also included at Not for Profit entity. Not sure how this is all going to shake out, but as a long standing patient, I would not switch to the new folks who make you feel like there is not a choice. Dr. Weintritt entered into a business relationship with Sentara Hospital to perform a new cutting edge treatment called interoperative radiation. Something went wrong and in June 2013 he left his practice. The comments below (7/15/13) are not from a patient. Dr. Weintritt was my doctor. He developed my treatment plan and performed my lumpectomy. I had complete faith and trust in his abilities. Literally a few days after my surgery, I learned that he had abruptly left his practice, with no notice to any of his patients, or to his practice/partner. I was left in the middle of treatment. The interruption in my treatment plan resulted in a significantly delayed second surgery which resulted in a change in the options available to me for post radiation treatment. Over a month transpired before I was contacted by someone from the doctor's new location. The emotional distress this caused was inexcusable, unprofessional, and probably violated numerous medical ethical protocols. The method in which this was done and the psychological and physical harm he caused to his patients is indicative of someone that has flawed values and priorities. He put his business before his patients. For this reason alone (not for his skills or personal manner), I do not recommend Dr. Weintritt to anyone as their physician of choice for breast cancer treatment. There are too many other excellent comprehensive breast cancer treatment resources in the Northern Virginia/metropolitan DC area where you will be treated and taken care of completely and professionally. I was fortunate to be referred to Dr. David Weintritt by the nurse in my GP's office. She was also referred by another patient. I had my follow up visit with him today. For the first time in my life I had to have a 'finding of interest' checked out over a year ago and it turned out to be nothing. But while I was going through the waiting and uncertainty, having my first appointment with Dr. Weintritt immediately put me at ease. Dr. Weintritt was the doctor that diagnosed my breast cancer 3 yrs ago and in that time I have gotten to him as well as his staff. I have always regarded him as a true professional and his staff as an extension of his high standards as a doctor. I recently saw him at the his new location at Mt. Vernon hospital, and while the setting has changed, the attention to detail and the genuine love for his patients has not. My journey with cancer and the treatments involved were a long one, but I knew I had a great doctor to help guide me through. I can always count on Dr. Weintritt or someone in his office to be helpful and reassuring when I have questions. He has a deep passion for his work and caring for his patients. I want to thank Dr.Weintritt for the wonderful treatment I received from the time I was told I had breast cancer. When a woman is diagnosed with this disease she is flooded with conflicting emotions. Am I going to die? What will this do to my family? Will I be less of women? I turned to Dr Weintritt for help, and he gave me hope, assurance, and understanding. He explained all my options to me so that I thoroughly understood them. He told me that because of the kind of cancer I had, ductal cancer, right breast, in situ, I would be a good candidate for a new procedure that he was performing called lumpectomy with IORT. After careful consideration I decided to go with this new treatment. I am happy to say that I came through the surgery with very little pain and no side affects from the radiation. I just went for my two-week post op and everything is well. I am healing and best of all there was no cancer evident in the tissue that was removed at the time of surgery. I actually joined my family at our beach house 3 days after my surgery. I have Dr. Weintritt to thank for this. He is current on all procedures for breast cancer patients. In this world good things just don't happen, they take hard work, dedication, and attention to detail. That is what he brings to his profession. God has given him a gift and he uses it everyday to help others. In my case we are plodding new ground, as he was able to combine several procedures into one, making it unnecessary for follow-up radiation. He is a wonderful man and surgeon. I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone faced with this disease. Remember it was because of early detection that things turned out for the best, so getting a mammogram at least once a year is a small thing you can do to save your life.
