It's no wonder that NOC docs continue to show up on the Washingtonian and Northern Virginia…read moremagazine 'Top Doctors.' I first saw Dr. Root for a trigger thumb surgery -- that I had needed for 2+ years. Dr. Root fixed it up perfectly. My thumbs function perfectly again. Dr. Root listened to me, answered my questions thoroughly, and never made me feel badly for not taking care of my trigger thumb years earlier. The entire process from start to finish was such a great experience. I decided to see what else I could get fixed while I was at the NOC office. So I wandered over to Dr. Ochiai's bay and scheduled an appointment for chronic knee and hip pain. Turns out I had a labral tear that I had been overcompensating for probably a decade or more. Dr. Ochiai was thorough at every appointment. He answered all of my questions. He never made me feel rushed or like I was asking stupid questions. Over the course of one year, Dr. Ochiai took me through other nonsurgical options, such as physical therapy b/c I was hesitant to have such major surgery. Finally, surgery day. I felt very comfortable. Doctor Ochiai did a fantastic job and even showed me the pictures (b/c I was interested) he took of the surgery. Around 2-3 months post surgery, with PT, I'm healing well. I'm walking normally again and even dancing. My follow-up visits with Dr. Ochiai have been great. As per usual, Dr. Ochiai is thorough, kind, and always remembers to ask me about my progress in school. He's my absolute favorite!! I'm glad that I don't have anything else that needs repairing BUT if I did, I trust Dr. Ochiai and the other docs at NOC to take care of me. Thank you Dr. O! Thanks Dr. Root!! Thanks NOC!!

After months of ankle and foot pain, my PT referred me to Dr. Buchanan and after the first visit, I knew I was on the right path to healing. He was very pleasant and patient with all my questions and concerns and clearly explained what was going on with my foot. I had ankle ligament reconstruction a year ago and my foot is now better than ever. The office was great to work with on scheduling appointments, the PA Jessica was fabulous, and the surgery was very straightforward. One thing I really liked was the detailed instructions for pre and post surgical care. This established realistic expectations for my recovery and something I could refer back to when needed. They are a very caring and helpful group of people and I will continue to use them for my joint care.

Within four visits the pain was negligible. I think the dance background influences how the PTs I worked with approach diagnosis and treatment. Got to my appointment and she only helped me with one exercise that was nominal and did nothing for me. She took maybe 10 minutes with me about my issue. The rest of the hour we talked about personal things about her family and mine that were similar. She was very friendly, no problems there. She finally said that she really couldn't do much more. I could come back for two more sessions that would not be for an hour, but as I recall, she was still going to charge me for an hour and said she didn't know if it would help much. She referred me to a surgeon. I gave up on going to another Physical Therapist (PT) for 10 months. I figured it was a waste of time. I finally went to another one and within five minutes he gave me exercises that were phenomenal. Within two days I was seeing improvement. I no longer have any pain and I have phenomenal movement. The costs are extremely high. Like other reviews have said, they are dreadful about insurance, they are not informative about insurance, and even though they don't accept insurance, they are not very helpful about it. They are rude about it also. They do not explain things well at all. If you ask questions, they get irritated. I wish I had seen some of these reviews before I went. They were referred to me by someone who thought they could be helpful. Look elsewhere for your PT needs.

After quite a bit of research, I visited Dr. Nguyen to look into problems I was having with my…read moreeyes, which was cataracts. I've wore glasses and contacts as long as I can remember, and couldn't figure out why I was having issues all of a sudden. When I first went to My Eye Doctor to find out why my vision was blurred, they couldn't really figure it out. Thankfully Dr. Nguyen diagnosed the issue immediately. Since I'm younger (mid 40s) to have cataracts, I was certainly concerned with making the right decision to make a correction. Dr. Nguyen was extremely helpful in educating me and informing me of all my options when it comes to cataract surgery and all the different options for new lenses (IOLs). Of course I researched by reading several articles, watching videos, and reviewing tons of marketing by the different companies. I probably wasted a lot of time with all of that as ultimately, I found that I just needed to put my trust in Dr. Nguyen. She is up to date with all the new technologies, and is certainly well respected in the ophthalmology community. I really appreciate all the time she spent with me making sure I understood all of the benefits, side effects, and costs of all the different options when it comes to cataract surgery. Eventually, I opted to have a multi-focal lens implanted so that I wouldn't be dependent on wearing glasses as it helps you with seeing at a distance, intermediate, and reading. I didn't like the idea of seeing halos at night when driving, but Dr. Nguyen explained how there is no perfect lens, that will compare to the capabilities of our natural lenses. I struggled with making the decision, but know that she helped me make the best decision. I had my first surgery on my right eye at the end of 2020, and then a second surgery on my left eye in April of 2022 (after the cataract in my left eye eventually progressed). Everyone at her office was also VERY HELPFUL and kind with scheduling and answering all my questions, especially Nikki! Shortly after the first surgery I probably overreacted to some normal side effects, and thought maybe I had a retina detachment after watching You-Tube videos about it. She came in to her office on her day off, and had a retina specialist also come in to make sure I was ok. They were able to put my concerns at east and confirm I was ok. I really appreciated that. Even though cataract surgery is very common, I was still nervous about it. Both surgeries was well, and I was pleased to hear Dr. Nguyen say it was "text book" right after she finished. In talking with one of the nurses as I was wheeled out to our car, she commented on how if she were to pick an eye surgeon she would definitely work with Dr. Nguyen; and she sees all the local doctors there at the surgical center. That just helped reaffirm I had made the right decision. Now I can see great out of both eyes and no longer need to wear contacts or glasses, which is awesome!

Several years ago, after going through the evaluation process for refractive surgery, I chose PRK…read moreover LASIK because I wanted to avoid the long-term risk of a LASIK flap becoming displaced. Looking back, I was not adequately informed about one of the most significant limitations of excimer laser vision correction, and I deeply regret not pursuing legal action at the time. The excimer laser typically creates a fully corrected optical zone of around 6.5 mm, with the surrounding tissue blended into the untreated cornea using what is commonly referred to as a "blend zone." The purpose of this transition is to reduce the sharp boundary between treated and untreated tissue. However, the blend zone is not fully corrected tissue. If your pupils dilate beyond the effective optical zone in dim lighting, as mine do, you have an increased risk of experiencing starbursts, halos, glare, and light streaking at night. The blend zone did not prevent those symptoms. Despite being characterized as an unlikely outcome during the consent process, I have lived with those symptoms ever since. I also experienced a complication after surgery when the protective bandage contact lens placed over my cornea slipped. The vision in my right eye became noticeably hazy, and the pain was unlike anything I had experienced before, which makes sense given that the cornea is the most densely innervated tissue in the human body. When I raised concerns with Dr. Anh Nguyen, they were simply dismissed. I was told there was no visible scarring despite the persistent haze I was experiencing, and that response never aligned with my own experience or subsequent vision. The potential for persistent nighttime visual disturbances is disclosed in the consent waiver you sign before surgery. They were presented as remote possibilities rather than meaningful tradeoffs that many patients should seriously consider. The paperwork acknowledged them, but the overall impression I walked away with was that they were exceedingly rare and unlikely to occur. By contrast, the therapeutic bandage contact lens--or the possibility of it slipping and causing lasting visual consequences--was never referenced or explained to me in any way. Meaningful informed consent requires patients to fully understand the realistic possibility of permanent nighttime vision changes and other complications before deciding to undergo an elective procedure. Whether the manner in which these risks were presented was the result of negligence, an overly optimistic view of the procedure, or a desire to encourage patients to proceed, I cannot say. What I do know is that the potential consequences I ultimately experienced were not communicated to me in a way that allowed me to make a truly informed decision.
