Apparently, despite the name and even the appearance of Dr. Crantz being familiar to both my husband and myself, it appears that I have him confused for another doctor according to his comment that he has not practiced at Fairfax Hospital for some time. My stay there was just a few months ago so it was obviously NOT Dr. Crantz. I have updated with this correction as well as giving five stars as an apology for the mix up. I am truly, truly sorry for the misunderstanding and feel horrible about it! In fact, I am looking for an endocrinologist to see and would like to give Dr. Crantz a try if he will have me as a patient. Again, I am deeply sorry for the confusion. ****************** I was hospitalized at Fairfax Hospital for tachycardia & uncontrolled hypertension. I had been in & out of my local hospital with no real answers & came to Fairfax b/c they have better resources. I have several chronic illnesses & chronic pain so the hospital is often like a second home to me, unfortunately. The past year has been particularly rough with two major surgeries for severe Stage IV endometriosis & difficulties w/ interstitial cystitis. When Dr. Crantz came into my room, he showed compassion & concern which was desperately needed & appreciated. He did a thorough exam, promised that he would get to the bottom of things & said, "You will not leave here until I have an answer for you." When you are this sick, scared & desperate for answers, a doctor like this is a Godsend. As he left my room, he promised to return to talk to me further about a care plan & eventually, to provide me with the answers I was seeking. I cried harder than I had in a long time when he left, tears of relief & hope that someone cared enough to figure out what is wrong & I felt I was in great hands. However, being a chronic pain patient as well as someone who is battling chronic illness, my needing frequent hospitalizations automatically qualifies me to be judged as a "frequent flier" AKA a "drug seeker." Even though I am under the care of a qualified pain management physician & I follow his care plan to a "T," & even though every in-hospital pain management team I have met with understands my care plan & issues with tolerance, I often run into this prejudice & it affects my care negatively. Sadly, this is a common problem that chronic pain patients face. If I was being discriminated against for my faith, orientation or the color of my skin, the doctor would be disciplined if not fired. But it is perfectly acceptable in the medical field to discriminate against those with chronic pain simply because there are some who do abuse the system. There are no words to describe the humiliation one feels once you realize you are being looked down on & judged for something you have not, nor ever will do (abuse pain medication). When you are more sick than you have ever been in your life, desperate for answers & too weak to fight the system when it turns on you, it is one of the most hopeless, scary & demoralizing positions to be in. So imagine my disappointment when Dr. Crantz, after looking into my file, where I'm sure I'm clearly labeled for my frequent hospitalizations, would not even come talk to me as promised. He sent the hospitalist in to tell me that he believes my pain medications are the cause of my symptoms (I later consulted with 3 different pain management specialists to see if that was even possible & they all said there is absolutely no medically sound reason for such a judgement, that it would not make any sense for it to be my pain medication causing my issues & that unfortunately, they see this scenario happen frequently to their patients by uninformed doctors who know nothing about pain management & simply act on stereotypes & bias rather than science & facts. Even though my tests showed a significant adrenal insufficiency, Dr. Crantz refused to treat it & instead advised, through the hospitalist, that I "stop taking all of those pain medications." The very medications that help me function through level 8-10 chronic pain. Medications I have taken for years w/o a problem. The only thing Dr. Crantz's advice would accomplish is to set me back significantly in my treatment & put me through unnecessary, unbearable pain. He refused to speak to me face to face to discuss my concerns & questions despite his promise to come back. And his promise to not send me home w/o answers was not truly fulfilled. Giving me "answers" that were not medically sound & that were based on an unethical bias & stereotype towards me is not an acceptable answer. read more

If I had listened to this doctor more than 20 years ago, I would more than likely be dead today. I had Cushing's and was officially diagnosed and successfully treated after seeking a second opinion. All Dr. Crantz focused on was my weight, dictated his clinical notes in front of me saying I didn't have the disease I had, and that I simply needed to lose weight. From some of the other reviews on here, it sounds like he is still hung up on weight as the reason for illness. All the best to those of you who seek his help. read more

Not bad, not bad. After dealing with the wholly inept VA system for the last 18 months, I finally said that enough was enough and I wanted to see a civilian specialist. I went in to have my thyroid checked (a wonderful by-product of my first Afghanistan deployment) and potentially adjust my dosage levels. He listened - somewhat eccentrically - to me describing the situation and then detailed his treatment strategy that he was going to go through. It jived with my internet research on the subject so I went with it. My only complaint was this overweight Persian woman who insisted on yelling into her phone for 30 minutes while we were in the waiting room. The nurses did nothing about it and right when I hit my breaking point and was about to say something did she go back for her appointment. It makes me want to go buy the cell-phone jammer and keep it on me for such occasions. Even if they are illegal. I'll go back - better than what I can say about the VA! read more

Don't bother calling. After calling for an appointment and giving all of the requested information, I was told I had to register in their portal and send a photo of my insurance card and then they would call to schedule an appointment. I did all of that. A voicemail was left that was pretty much unintelligible (the same person I had spoken with and the voice was a mere whisper), so I called. I was told Dr. Crantz did not accept the case. I said why didn't you just tell me he wasn't accepting new patients so I wouldn't have to bother registering online? Oh, he is accepting new patients, I was told. He looks at the registrations and chooses the cases he wants and he declined to take yours (I was actually phoning for my husband, Mike). I've never heard anything like this before. He should have his license revoked for being a total jerk. I guess it's good my husband didn't merit his attention-he probably wouldn't have liked anyone as crude and uncaring as Dr. Crantz. read more

I went to see Dr. Crantz this morning and he was very kind, considerate and caring. He took time to really talk to me about diet and exercise as well as encourage me to continue with the life style changes that I have made. I see Dr. Crantz quarterly...he is always prompt and professional and more than willing to discuss any issues. He is a true professional and is always willing to take my phone calls. I went to see him for rapid bone loss, and had just before that learned that I had low thyroid production. I didn't like him at all. He really didn't take my concerns seriously and I thought he was arrogant. Told me to do jumping jacks. I actually reversed the bone loss after another doctor increased my thyroid meds. That took several years, but in in my case insufficient thyroid hormones cause rapid bone loss. read more

It was clean and even the people at the front desk were nice. You should go here for your internal and endocrinology needs. So, I had a different endo after I moved here in 2007. He was recommended by a local gp. Not so good a dr. After two years, I looked on the thyroid association dr.'s list and found Dr. Crantz in my area. My first appointment was great. He brought me in, went through my history, explained his approach and what I should know about my disease--hypothyroidism. Then we did the blood test and a nurse did a quick physical. He is the 3rd dr. to treat me and the only one to test me for why I have this disease. A week later, I go back for the results. After 5 years, I finally know that I have Hashimotos. Finally someone cared to find out. Also, we went through my lab results side by side. His change in my medications made perfect sense. His approach is rational, logical and practical. I will be back in 8 weeks for a follow up after the medication changes. Finally a dr. who didn't treat me like an idiot who cared enough to find out why and with a rational practical approach to my treatment. Hallelujah. Dr. Crantz is the most outstanding doctor i have ever had and wish they were all as good as him. He has been my endocrinologist for many decades and is excellent and i have seen several others but none can compete with him. Dr. Crantz is a great endocrinologist. He is thorough, extremely knowledgeable, and truly cares about his patients. One thing I really appreciate is the time he takes with his patients during appointments; he always does a thorough exam in the examination room, and will often take the time to separately meet with you in his office to discuss any concerns after each appointment. There are not many doctors out there who will take this kind of time with their patients. When I was away at University, Dr. Crantz was great about following-up about lab results that I faxed over from the University health service. If you are lucky. Dr. Crantz will spend less than 10 minutes with you. Hand on doorknob type. I chose him for his background and reputable medical degree. The thyroid medicine he gave me for my issues was too much and I became ill and could barely get out of bed. I went back to him and my body went from hypothyroid to hyperthyroid so he took me off it cold turkey. What I have read, you never take people off it that way. I was in his office that time probably 2 minutes. He has very little patience and no bedside manner. My new female endocrinologist is excellent, she does detailed blood work set, upped my vitamins so the levels are perfect according to my body, spent 30 minutes with me and chose the perfect amount of thyroid medication. I have never felt better. By the way, when I compare male doctors to female, I have found woman talk more in detail and are more willing to take plenty of time to answer your concerns. Dr. Crantz needs to retire. I drive from Leesburg to Mclean to see my specialist and spend $30 to spend less than 5 minutes with him. Literally, every appointment has consisted of him speaking to me for probably 2-3 minutes, his staff taking my blood to check for hormone levels, and adjusting my prescription. That's it. I voiced my concerns about my prescription's side effects, and he brushed them off. He never sent me to get a sonogram of my thyroid to check for cancer, which for my disease, there runs a possibility of cancer, which can creep up in a person's 20s and 40s (I'm 27, and actually found out about this from my gynecologist). I would ask questions, he would answer them abruptly and dismiss my questions regarding alternate therapies. You can tell this guy does not love his job. And last but not least, his staff is by far some of the rudest employees I've ever encountered. I will call into the office to speak to a staff member, they will put me on hold, and never pick back up again. I have to call back again and again if I want to actually be able to speak to someone! No one EVER smiles in that place, I don't even think I've ever heard "Have a nice day!". Granted, I'm sure their working conditions aren't the greatest. I've already switched doctors, but I wanted everyone to know not to waste their specialist co-pay for this guy if you want real healthcare. read more

Terrible experience. He needs to work on his bed side manner. He has no social skills and lacks compassion. I felt disrespected and not listened to when I saw him. He was condescending and I got the sense he wanted to tell me what to do, instead of work with me collaboratively (since you know it IS my health and body). There was a mix up about what he could and could not help with and instead of explaining it to me in a calm and civil manner, he raised his voice and was very condescending. I had to walk out I felt so belittled. Someone else on here said he should retire, and I agree. If you want to see someone that treat you with respect, is compassionate and acknowledges your autonomy, don't see this guy. read more

Just saw another doctor in the same practice, different building-who looked at my test results, gave me a physical exam; listened to my concerns-then asked if any doctor had ever mentioned Polycystic Ovary Syndrome to me. She explained that it could be causing all my symptoms and I'd need bloodwork to confirm. If I really do have PCOS that means Dr.Crantz really missed a HUGE diagnosis-another indicator he needs to retire; and patients-especially women-should go elsewhere. read more

Today was my first visit- great! - to describe my experience in a word. I was a little late to my morning appointment during rush hour. Nonetheless office staff helped me through the paperwork quickly and Dr Crantz was calling my name in no time. One look at my paperwork and he knew exactly what needed to happen on this visit. He spoke briefly, he examined me and his staff drew blood - said he'd be calling me later in the day with the results. I texted my feedback from my cell to the feedback channel and got into my office and registered on the portal they provided- my info was already in the system! By the time I finished emailing him my full meds list, my cell was ringing and he delivered the test results as promised and advised on next steps until the next appt in 4 weeks. read more

My 25 daughter is severely disabled (physically and mentally). I called them to get a confirmation that she does or does not have osteoporosis as another doctor has suggested. When I told them that she has BCBS and VA Medicaid, they denied her service because her SECONDARY insurance is Medicaid. My daughter has many doctors who do not accept Medicaid and I pay what BCBS contracts with them. They just kept saying this was their "office practice". In the 9 years that my daughter has had Medicaid, I have NEVER heard or seen this practice before. This man is insensitive and uncaring. He spent much of his time when in the office talking to me but looking at the computer screen. He manner is cold dismissive and arrogant. His staff is generally okay but not efficent. In my opinion he wasted valuable time trying to adjust my calcium levels when it seemed evident to me that surgery was the next step. When he came to that conculsion I asked him once again what the consequences might be and his reply was "well you might wake up dead", an oxymoron and I told him so. His recommendations for a surgeon were awful and neighter he or his staff could even provide current telephone numbers or addresses. Avoid this doctor, find someone else. read more

This was the worst experience I ever had with a medical professional. Both he and his staff are completely unprofessional (yelling at each other and belittling each other in front of me during my visit, as well as not being on the same page about the type of blood tests I needed to receive). Dr. Crantz himself was a complete nightmare. I spent hours the week before my appointment writing a detailed medical history for him to review and he barely glanced at it. I explained my overwhelming thyroid symptoms, allergies to medications for other hormonal disorders and he brushed it all off saying that I was fat, lazy and surely could not be dieting, exercising or restricting my calories as much as I claimed. He told me if I really wanted to lose weight to eat 700-800 calories per day and quit eating fruit completely disregarding my history of eating disorders due to the inability to maintain an appropriate weight. He begrudgingly said he would order the thyroid blood work I was asking about, even though he blamed everything on my supposed fat, lazy lifestyle. The best part was the 2nd (and last) visit to receive the blood work results, which proved I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis. He refused to treat me despite my declining quality of life and said to just come back in 6 months for more blood tests to monitor the situation. He then proceeded to tell me that if the symptoms were particularly bothersome, I could always take the very medication I had told him I was allergic to 7 days earlier. I cannot, in good conscience, recommend this doctor to anyone. read more
