My mother recently passed away and I came into possession of her Roman Missal and a New Testament. They were in a sorry state, with the covers falling off but I wanted to save them because my mom had cherished these books as a young woman back in the 1950's. The New Testament was an inexpensive one with cardboard covers. My mother had written notes in it though, so it felt very special. I arranged with David Weinstein to replace the cover with a synthetic material but he found a small piece of beautiful leather and used that at no extra charge. The Missal was re-covered with goat skin. Both volumes were embossed in gold script on the covers. They look and feel amazing - like new books with a whole new life. It was so nice to hang out for a bit with David in his peaceful shop. I would definitely come back to see him for any other book binding needs. He's a real artist. read more

I couldn't find a bookbinder in HAWAII to re-bind my Bible so I had to search outside of the island for an experienced craftsman. And I'm glad I did and found David. His work is PERFECTION!!! Spectacular craftsmanship. Exactly what I requested in a new binding of my Bible. The finished product needed to be shipped to Hawaii in the biggest storm of the century so I asked that it be wrapped in waterproof protection in case it got exposed to the rain while being delivered. I reached out to David Weinstein via email to inquire about binding a special religious book. He quoted me $300 with a 1-2 day turnaround time, which sounded reasonable. Since this was my first time having a 552-page book bound, I called to ask a few clarifying questions about printing to make sure I didn't make a costly mistake. From the beginning of the phone conversation, David was condescending and dismissive. When I asked for guidance, he stated that he was not going to spend his time telling me what to do and that I could "look at any other book" for reference. He also warned me about using thin pages because someone previously used thick paper and the book wouldn't open properly -- but offered no real guidance beyond that. When I asked additional questions, he seemed bothered and unwilling to help. He mentioned that he knew someone at "Minute Man Press" who could assist with printing, but when I asked for contact information, he told me to just look it up myself. He initially told me I needed to come into the store to review binding options. I then asked again whether the book could realistically be completed by Saturday (four days away), given that his email had stated a 1-2 day turnaround. At that point, he responded, "You have no choice now and I get to do whatever I want," which was confusing and concerning. When I referenced his written 1-2 day turnaround quote, he then said the normal turnaround is actually 30-60 days. The interaction was so unpleasant that I no longer felt comfortable trusting him with something so meaningful and important to me. I let him know his tone felt rude and unkind; he acknowledged that I was right and said he would have someone else handle the call. Ultimately, I decided not to move forward. For such a significant and sentimental project, professionalism and patience matter. Unfortunately, that was not my experience. So, there I was, with a wonderful item - the score to the opera La Boheme signed by the one and only Giacomo Puccini, its composer. Unfortunately, it was falling apart. Binding was in tatters, and if it wasn't attended to quickly, it was probably going the way of all flesh - and one look at my flesh and you'll know what that means. So, I Googled and up came David's name and of course being a Yelp Elite I came right here and read his raves. And since he was ten minutes away, I called, made an appointment and drove over. He advised me on restoration or rebinding it in leather - I opted for the latter because the original covers were flimsy and cheap. He said it would take two to three weeks to do and we chose the leather binding for it. Well, it didn't take two or three weeks, it took a few days and I went and got it and what was once falling apart now is strong like ox and beautiful to look at. I'm attaching some photographs because here on Yelp you can do such things as attach photographs. I'll be going back with some other items that can use some TLC. Can't say enough about David !! My dog chewed on my Grandmother's Bible which had more sentimental than monetary value to me. David is open on Sunday which is a BIG plus as I work during "normal" working hours. Easy to find with plenty of parking. He showed me cheapest to most expensive options and let me choose. I can't recommend David enough for anyone in need of high-quality bookbinding, especially if it is a last minute request! I brought in a Bible that was falling apart at the binding, and he was able to restore it beautifully in just one hour. This was at the end of his day too, but he took the time and care to ensure everything was perfect. I literally called and showed up same day and he got it fixed. David not only provided excellent service, but his pricing was extremely fair and affordable. He even told me it would be cheaper to buy a new Bible, but he completely understood the sentimental value of preserving this one and was willing to fix it nonetheless. That honesty really stood out to me. He is truly passionate and dedicated to his work. It is very hard to find people these days that are devoted to their job for the love of the craft, rather than chasing the money that comes with it. I recently went to David to ask about getting a children's book mended. He was so kind, telling me that the book would be expensive to fix and that I might be better off just buying a new copy. When I told him that it is out of print, he went on his computer to do a search himself just to make sure I couldn't get the book anywhere else. It was really above and beyond customer service.
